THere was sure a lot of hype for those World Premiere/What-a-Cartoons, like too much hype, and they were like 7 minutes long. Good times

Looking back at these, it's easier to see how things unfolded. Just the amount of hype they tried to instill in the new shorts showed how much they wanted them to be hits. Which to some degree most were, but at the same time it's that favortism that changed CN forever. As we each may pick a different date, but a lot of who miss an "old CN" will remember the days our favorites got pushed off the network in favor of whatever new thing CN has it felt deserved to be spammed. Which one hand, I can't blame CN for changing with the times, in the past re-runs were a big part of cable. Now not so much. But honestly dvds of the shows I would rather rewatch over what CN chose to show most often are probably the reason I made peace with losing this. As I suspect most of us have.

Money ruined Cartoon Network. Most of the good old cable channels (TNT, USA, Nick at Nite, Cartoon Network) probably would have made more original programming from the get-go but they couldn't afford to. So instead, they had to be creative. That's where all this great interstitial material came from. They had to make old cartoons seem cool with clever advertising. (Some of us, who love old cartoons anyway, wouldn't have even needed the clever advertising to watch them but I sure am glad we got it!) Also, Space Ghost Coast to Coast, one of the best shows ever, came about because they couldn't afford to made a new character! As soon as they made enough money, they didn't have to be clever anymore. They could just buy new shows in an attempt to be trendy. Oddly enough, I think Toonami , which was composed of shows that were reruns from other sources, made Cartoon Network more trendy than any of the original World Premiere Toons did. It took years for stuff like the Power Puff Girls to really gain traction but once every Hot Topic Tween finally caught on to Dragonball Z, that was when the network really started going down the toilet. Sad to say we will never see an era like pre-1997 Cartoon Network ever again.

While i'm sure they wanted new material to add to the collection to do successful, as really what network doesn't? But I'd say Cartoon Network in the Cohen era never really betrayed the "everybody gets their toons" mantra. As more joined some had to share a little more but that was what the Boomerang block and channel were supposed to supplement. Of course Boomerang itself is an elephant in the room. Launched in 2000 under Cohen, and at the time I don't think many people really saw the concept of the tv on dvd boom coming, let alone now with streaming and downloads. Just by comparison serious efforts by WB to release their cartoons on dvd didn't even begin for Looney Tunes until 2003 and 2004 for Hanna Barbera. Cohen had already left the network by 2001. While a lot of people still include those as good years, a lot of things that altered CN began then. In the end Cartoon Network still would have changed to the degree that all of cable has changed. But I think a lot of who have fond memories of this era probably do believe Cohen probably would have handled some things better had she of still been overseeing the network than what her successors did. But those are could-have-been thoughts not reality. But life changes and new battles are formed. So for some of us, the bigger battle no longer is returning Cartoon Network to the past. It's making sure everything we saw on CN then and now is available to us legally whether it's on physical disc, a digital download or on-demand streaming. Something we're still not able to say as far as most of the divisions in the Time Warner umbrella are concerned and plenty others as well.

Yeah. One of these days I'd loooove to hear why Hanna-Barbera gave it one name, yet Cartoon Network promoted them under an entirely different, unrelated moniker. They didn't start using the "What A Cartoon" name until 1997, well after the initial What A Cartoon project ended.

All of H-B's internal promotion and production work for the original stuff labels it as "What A Cartoon", and not "World Premiere Toons". I've only seen that name used in Cartoon Network promotional material. It's clear that H-B called it one thing and CN called it another. My theory is that CN wanted to promote that these shorts are brand new, and WAC didn't convey that properly. When the newness wore off, they started promoting the shorts under H-B's name.

@SuperAdventures I always wondered why they called that episode of space ghost "president's day nightmare" I mean, I knew it was because the episode was simulcast on the three turner networks on president's day-but I wonder where the "nightmare" part came from. Maybe it was a hassle to put together because of how big of an event it was.

I assume that they intended on originally promoting the project as "World Premiere Toons", but the much more memorable "What A Cartoon!" at the beginning of every short is the name that caught on. Hence why they named their compilation show the "What A Cartoon Show".

You'll find that a lot of the humor in these early CN promos and interstitials are targeted towards adults, especially those who grew up seeing those very same cartoons. It got tiring re-running the same old shows over and over, so the people behind early CN did what they could with their tight budget.....lampoon and show these ancient toons in a new light. A lot of this stuff went COMPLETELY over my head as a kid. No surprise most of those guys are now running Adult Swim. =)

Heh, McCracken and co. were so young back then............hard to believe that this was all 15 years ago as of this month, ain't it? The "What A Cartoon!" project forever changed Cartoon Network. 1995 was one of the, if not the most important year in the history of the network. They made a lot of "firsts" that year.

I doubt it. The stuff that Cartoon Network has now is unwatchable. As CR! at TGWTG has said, "When did my cartoons turn into the short bus!?!" Back in the early days of Cartoon Network and after the World Premier toons, there was nothing but greatness to be found. That applies to early Nick Days as well when they premiered Nicktoons for the first time. It was a great time. Now, they all are just sooo horrible.

@trapadoored Yes, I believe that's why that episode is titled as such, as simulcasting on three networks with just the small operation that Turner was at the time must've been a "nightmare".

@SuperAdventures -and I got cartoon network in (I think november) 95- I wonder if there is a reason they titled the "world premiere toon in" epsisode of SGC2C the "presidents day nightmare" -u can tell it aired on presidents day-but I wonder what was so nightmarish about it. I would kill to have some stuff from this era-like the 96 valentines day special with Brak and Zorak or the "johnny Questmas" christmas bumpers.

*Sigh* World Premiere Toons... Are they the same thing as What A Cartoon! ? (I'm more familiar with the latter) You know, the network was actually planning to do a similar project with more modern people (ex: Craig McCracken , Chris Battle, Chris Reccardi ) titled Cartoonstitute. Unfortunately, the project got scrapped in mid- August (just about). It would have probably given the channel some new life. (However, some of the already made pilots got green-lighted, so maybe....)
