I love me the HELL outta Gil Kane! His art taught me all about the philtrum, an overlooked part of human facial anatomy. And he was a sterling guy in real life, too.

The idea of super powers being bestowed to someone unworthy was beautifully explored in John Arcudi and Doug Mahnke's "Major Bummer". Well worth checking out.

Gil Kane by himself is my favorite Kane! Definitely using markers, very raw inking. I would almost not call it inking, it's just pure drawing. It reveals everything that made him tick as an artist, you can still feel the construction he did without it being hidden by pretty Inking. He said that he regretted not having spend more time on developing his craft further when it came to the finish because he would always end up spending so much time on the underlying structure. I can definitely see what he meant, but that's what made him unique and I actually like the raw look it creates.

He can definitely draw better than me. You guys ever hear the story about Mr. Kane getting the job of drawing the Wildcats vs Aliens cover? When asked if he wanted reference for the Aliens he said no. And then turned in a cover of, I think Zealot was the character's name, facing off against an alien of his own creation! Chris Sprouse redrew it for publication.

Can really see the Kane influence on Chaykin in these. Dig them both.

I love, love, LOVE Gil Kane's artwork. He was such an uncommon talent, and I hope he knew how much he was appreciated by fans before he passed. He was a brilliant illustrator with no equal.

Inking looks like Rapidograph; I loved those pens. And I bought the first three issues but it was left on a cliffhanger since #4 was never published.

The Marvel western reprint titles Mighty Marvel Western and Western Gunfighters had Kane covers for a couple of years in the mid-70s, and that stuff is some of my favorite Kane artwork. His compositional sense was so good.

Hi Guys, Love the show! I was first introduced to Gil Kane in the issues of Conan the barbarian. At the time I wasn't a fan but as I got older i really started to appreciate his work.

I read in a interview with Gil Kane, from the late 80’ that he used these cheap green ball pens, to ink with.

All of those old school artists who use markers had strong feelings about each other. Apparently Toth was pissed off at Thorne for starting to draw more messy like Kubert as he got older. Marker wars!

Thanks for another great video! I’m so glad you covered this book, it’s an overlooked, albeit lesser, late-period work by a pair of very talented comic greats. Funny story: I first learned of Edge from an interview Gil Kane gave to a magazine right before I left the country as a foreign exchange student. When I returned, I was excited to find this book and read it, but it had already vanished without a trace! 😂

As to Gil Kane's inking. Most of his career he inked with markers, which in many ways is what a lot of comic artists who still work on paper do today. In his later years especially, Gil would do his layouts on 8 1/2" X 11" paper, then on a xerox machine blow it up to full size comic art. Afterword he would put it on a light box and go right to inking on the final bristol board. In other words, his small layouts were his pencils. Not many have that skill.

Gil Kane inked by Murphy Anderson was probably the best looking art there was.

Kane also drew two issues of Spider-Man around the time Ben Reilly transitioned from Scarlet Spider to Spider-Man. He also did a cool 70s throwback cover for Journey Into Mystery -1.

I know I bought this when it came out and don’t remember the first thing about it. Power & Glory and Strikeback! were the best Bravura series IMO (but I didn’t pick up AMCA back then). Definitely check out Strikeback.

I love Gil Kane up to the 80's. His Silver Age and early Bronze Age are great. But I think that his health and his failed Star Hawks Newspaper strip during the mid 80's took it out of him. His work on DC's Superman in the 80's is rough to look at.

If you ever do another Gil Kane video maybe check out his Superman comics from the 80s. They are collected together and make up a pretty good size graphic novel. He inks himself there too and I think the art is a lot bette than this comic.

Although Malibu only printed 3 of the 4 completed issues - this was a bad time to be coming up with new super-hero universes, the speculator glut had done its damage - all 4 were eventually collected in a nice volume by Ibooks. I prefer the coloring in the collection, it looks much much better when not using the shiny paper. According to Grant in the collection’s foreword, Kane was fighting cancer when they were working on this. They’d planned three sets of four-issue mini-series to complete the tale, but this was the only one they could finish before Kane died.

Gil Kane art shines with fine line inks. Sword of the Atom is a great example. I remember reading a lot of complaints about Kane's art on Micronauts. But Al Milgrom's fat brush strokes just clashed horribly with Kane's fine line work.

A terrible comic featuring outstanding art by Gil Kane. This is clearly a comic that most people would enjoy primarily for the art. The computer colouring does it no favours though - I'd much prefer to read this in black and white. As for that "page" - looks to me like the page may have been accidentally flipped horizontally before lettered. That's the only explanation I can think of! The only Bravura title I bought (and still own) was that one by Kevin Maguire - can't remember the title but I quite enjoyed it. I seem to recall it being cancelled before ending the story though 😕

Am not a Kane fan. Janson was good on him. So was Palmer and Romita.
