My friend Chad Hunt was an inker in the 90's for X-Men, Wolverine, X-Force and Uncanny X-Men. Do you guys want to maybe get an interview with him to talk about his time at Marvel? I don't think he'd mind.

Just a note about the John Byrne influence in Jim Lee's art. I see it in the way Jim Lee draws torsos. Toward the end of his X-Men run, Byrne started distorting the pecs on male superheros. the rib cage got expanded and the pecs shrunk and moved upward, with just a few quick horizontal lines to define the musculature. Jim Lee picked that up and still uses it. You can see it most clearly here in the drawing of Magneto on X-men 274. The interesting thing for me is that this style has been passed on now to younger artists like David Finch. I wonder if they're aware of where it started. John Byrne's influence continues to ripple through the industry.

That simonson x-factor is actually a 3 issues that fit together, that archangel cover on the previous page fits with them too... and that is for sure one of the coolest pieces of cover art/comic art i've ever seen. So much genius from this era.

“No one owns all of these artist editions...” Um, I am almost there! Terry Moore and Jim Davis might never make the cut, but I have over 100 Artist/Gallery/Whatever Editions. They are VERY NICE. My favorite is probably the Basil Wolverton volume, but the Jack Davis one is incredible too. And of course all the Kirby volumes...and Wrightson’s Swamp Thing and...yeah, I love em!

That dry brush Sam Kieth used on the MCP 85 cover made me realize something I never had before: that Frazetta HAD to be an influence on SK. The branch and foliage, etc, looks right out of one of the pen & ink drawings Frazetta did for the Tarzan paperbacks.

Always great to hear you guys speculate about tools and technique. Pretty sure you're right about Rob Liefeld using Sharpies back in the day. It's been a while since I watched that old Stan Lee Presents interview with Rob (no more VHS player). I think it's on KZbin, so I'll have to watch it again and see what tools he's grabbing. I also dug your comments about Walt Simonson. His works LOOKS so "simple" or "sparse" in a Toth-like fashion, that it's easy to overlook just how fantastic it really is. That foot-stomp by the Thing on that one cover, with the force lines radiating away from the blank, empty circle, and that KIrby-esque Thing big toe, is really iconic. The viewer is practically on the level of the the "floor" or horizon for that image. Is that Warren Wingfoot who's the guy in the fedora and trench in the Fantasticar with the FF? Great comments too, on the imprint that Simonson left on Archangel, and the Kirby-esque nature of his designs. It reminded me of other artists trying to decide how to handle Crystal's hair, Black Bolt's costume and wings, Captain America's "mail shirt" or characters like Mister Miracle and Big Barda, with the weird design flourishes.

Great Video, with awesome commentary over some of the Best Covers of the Modern Era. No fooling, about 5 minutes after watching this video, I cracked open a Back Issue of Wizard (#60 the Fifth Anniversary Special from Aug 1996), and who wrote in one of the First Letters in the "Magic Words" Column? One James Rugg of Indiana, PA. He cuts a promo on "gimmicks" taking over the Comic Industry and directs readers to the Quality Bargain Marvel title, "Untold Tales of Spider-Man." Indiana, PA, about an Hour and half from Pittsburgh. Am I crazy or is the Letter from Jim Rugg, One half of the Dynamic Kayfabe Duo? Just a funny coincidence, huh?

Thanks for the video. Flipping through the pages bring back good memories. That is one of the worst Dale Keown cover. He is known for drawing muscles and that cover did everything but. I got some of his comics when he was still working on independent comics (before joining Marvel). Some cute art/paint work. Art Adams went through couple of phases too. I am surprised they did not include X-Men Classics #1 -which had the best Wolverine pose.

Both the first two Sam Keith's, Hulk and Wolverine, show the character's right arm (our left) at an impossible angle, like it's twisted around backward. That kind of thing would bother me endlessly. No matter how good the drawing is otherwise, that's just wrong. The X-Men #1 Magneto head, drifting way too far to the left, the What If Wolverine, with his head drifting even more absurdly to the side. How can anyone stand to look at these and not mind?
