Cartridge Razor vs Double Edge Razor
I very carefully picked contenders for both the ends, spent a lot of time working out the best approach with the shaving soap/cream and have made this competition as fair as possible. So it is
#Gillette vs #Gillette | Cartridge razor vs double edge razor. I use them both, I put both the razors I love against each other. Who wins…. I had a lot of fun making this video, I hope you enjoy watching it as well

Great Video no doubt! Just wanted to ask and confirm from your side - have you tried Philips one blade and is there any comparison between the Gillette power razer and one blade since I have very sensitive skin and am prone to rashes. I prefer one blade and after watching your video just thought to buy Gillette as well. Plz suggest

@Saurabh Kaushik thanks bud. If the One blade works but doesn’t give a close shave (as designed), then I would give the Gillette power a go. Be gentle with your passes and use a good after shave moisturising cream. Let me know how u go brother.

great video as usual. One question I got the Proglide power as you are already aware of. but the button on the handle is not lighting up when it's on. I just can feel the vibration but there is no light on the button. is it normal or it has a default. Shouldn't the button go orange when it's turned on?

Thank you for the most objective and best comparison review I've seen on a Cartridge razor V's a DE razor. Most of the comparison reviews that I've seen start out with a strong bias against Cartridge razors, and many DE shaving enthusiasts can sadly come across as being of the mindset that one is not a 'real' man unless you can master the intricacies of DE shaving. Like many, I started out shaving in my late teens with a Gillette DE razor. I have sensitive skin and found that whilst I didn't get razor burn, bumps, or other skin irritations, little nicks, cuts, and grazes were almost always a part of the DE shaving experience, such that I grew a beard in my early twenties in protest. When cartridge razors were first introduced I tried them and found that little nicks, cuts, and grazes had disappeared when using them, but i could get some occasional razor burn. In the ensuing years I've tried every cartridge razor on the market from Gillette and Shick and would agree on the Gillette Proshield models (Proglide and Proshield) being the pick. My personal favourites are the Two blade "Sensitive" razor which I can use to remove a 4 - 5 day growth with no issues whatsover, or to get the Proshield "Chill" for a BBS shave with the minimum of time and hassle to achieve it - although again I can get some razor burn if not careful and ensuring a well soaped up face at all times. However if I was to pick a shaver to use every day, it would be my Braun Series 9 electric; no it's not as close a shave as a razor - cartridge or DE - but, it's still a very close shave - if not BBS, and there are no nicks, cuts, grazes, razor burn, and no skin exfoliation. However, I have also dipped a returning toe in the waters of what seems a bit of renaissance - perhaps fashion - return of DE and single edge wet razors. I have razors from Supply and Oneblade. The Supply is a very good razor, with an injector blade similar to early Shick razors. I have the v2 of the original, and the slightly later SE and Pro models. All of them shave very well, and very close I find. My favourite there is the Pro, simply because of the adjustability of the blade exposure. However, like most wet razors with a fixed head, maintaining the 'correct' or 'optimum' angle over curved areas of the face - chin/jaw line, and under the neck, requires a great deal of care if the old small nicks, cuts, and grazes are to be avoided. Which segues into the Oneblade models. I have the Core, Hybrid, and the Genesis. Perhaps it is just me - maybe a combination of my sensitive skin, and perhaps I'm sometimes a little impatient, in a hurry, or make a mistake in using too much pressure, or not getting the angle quite right over curved edges of my face - but, there is no question the Oneblade is the very best wet razor I've ever used. I would put most of it's advantages down to the pivoting head - a rarity in single blade razors, - as this feature adroitly compensates for any excess pressure, and maintains the optimum angle as you move the razor over the curved edges of your face. I do not get any small nicks, cuts, or grazes from the Oneblades, and further, no skin irritation or razor burn either. In short the Oneblade razors give me the skin care that I get from my Braun Series 9 electric razor, but with an much closer shave. in terms of closeness, only the Supply Pro can better it with the adjustable blade exposure, but overall the Oneblade is the best wet razor I've ever used. Negatives are the upfront cost - - the Genesis is a engineering work of art, but very expensive. The other is time - the essential ingredient to all wet razors in general. I regard the Genesis as being my go to razor when I want to spoil myself and luxuriate in the best shave I can get with the available tools that I have. But for that 'quick' BBS shave on the run, rushing to get out the door, I still use and keep the two Gillette razors mentioned and will continue to do so. Variety can be the spice of life, and it's also nice to have different shaving tools for different uses and lifestyle scenarios. Thank you again for your most enjoyable review - apologies for the long post, but just thought I'd share my experiences.

That's awesome. You have summed up your shaving experience so beautifully. I fortunately used the One blade Core as a step closer to DE Shaving, infact I made a review on it as well. My experience with the One blade Core was amazing as well. I almost forgot I had a sensitive neck area. If the blades were not custom, they would be my favorite and go to as well. Given your shaving story, this has to be the perfect razor for you. Thanks again for sharing your experience and hope to hear more from you.

Great info and observations. I enjoy my Series 9 Pro for what it is. I have come to find that the Mach 3 shaves practically the same as the Pro 9 when shaving WTG. One could give a very slight edge to the Mach but its not much. Of course, going ATG will give the Mach the win, but not if one has sensitive skin.

I recently made the switch to a DE razor, and I was completely blown away by how well it worked. I opted for feather blades, which are extremely sharp, and to my delight, I had no razor burn, cuts, or any other irritations. When I used cartridge razors with five blades, I always struggled with dragging, and it took several passes to remove hair, leading to constant razor burn, bumps, cuts, and the like. Frankly, I hated shaving. However, since purchasing a DE razor, I am thrilled with the results and wish I had made the switch years ago.

When you feel it sting it means you have overstressed the skin.. with cartridges i always had irritation and the aluin bar stung allot. It happens that I have been using the Gillette KC for about 10 years now with Astra blades as swell. I have watched this - thank you. Another great video well explained , and you yourself say there is no discernible difference. I use the Gillette fusion power now, it’s easy, quick, and gives a good shave. So besides the cost, and taking into account the more fiddly aspect to a safety razor, why change? Also I find the cartridge lasts me easily 2 weeks if not 3 shaving with it every day. ( you felt just 5-7 shaves). Also, how do you use the two sides of the safety razor? Or is it just random. And I do want to try for myself, but it’s a fair investment too once you get the brush, soap, handle blades….and if I do like it, I would rather have bought a great handle rather than an ok one for trying. So many dilemmas! Also - just saw the Gillette KC Safety razor is on offer at £10 - So maybe its worth trying out at that price?
@allydz
@allydz 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, just use either sides random. It won't make a difference. Well definitely try the safety razor. You will find them to be 2 completely different experiences 🙂. Couple years ago, I wouldn't bother looking at a safety razor, now I have a few of them 🤣. I am personally happy with both cartridge & safety razor and keep switching every now and then. Just take it easy, no rush and no pressure on your skin when you try safety razors. And one doesn't necessarily need to go 3 passes if you are daily shaver. I do 1 or 2 passes for my daily shaves depending on the growth ✌️

@@allydz Thanks again - and if I am just going to give it a try initially (probably just take that £10 offer from Gillette - given you actually like that handle) - 1. What brush should I get / what cream should I buy / do I need the mixing bowl / what blades are best - anything else I need? I will try it a bit, and then maybe upgrade to a more quality handle & brush. Or is that daft? Sorry to keep asking you all these questions - I hope you don't mind.
@allydz
@allydz 2 жыл бұрын
@@sgoody1 don’t mind it all mate. Here to hopefully help as much as I can. KC Safety Razor is a mild razor (great for beginners) and comes with 5 blades as well. I would go a basic synthetic brush or a quality boar brush if you wanting to go all out and invest long term. Brushes are great for exfoliation with cartridge shaves as well, so that’s not going waste at all. Soaps… there is a huge range and it’s all about the scent and ingredients. It’s one of the fun parts with traditional shaving and changing the soaps helps me mix things up a little more. Proraso is a safe brand to go with IMO but if you can visit a store and see what you like better; I think you will have a lot more fun with it. Blades as well.. there is a massive range to trail and you will eventually find something that’s works well for you. Astra blades are well known. Bowl is not at all a necessity, it’s great for people with sensitive skin as they build lather on the bowl and then apply on the face. You can face lather and it works just as well. There is a lot of variations and range with all these parts; so don’t get overwhelmed. Stick to basics and you will eventually find your way around what suits your liking & skin the best.

A thorough, objective review. Thanks! So many cartridge vs DE comparisons start with the reviewer saying they hate cartridges, and they are just a marketing gimmick. Like that's gonna be an objective review. My beard and skin must be suited to cartridges. I can get a very smooth shave with cartridges using any canned foam or gel and one ATG pass. Fast, easy, and very little irritation. And Fusion cartridges especially last 2 weeks of daily shaving. I have a Henson mild DE razor and getting an equivalent shave takes multiple passes, more time and care, and more irritation. I'll keep practicing with the Henson, but it ain't easy.

I buy a lot of DE safety razors. The cheapest razor in my collection is the Roman Empire Shaving Caesar DE safety razor for $9.99. The Caesar safety razor also comes with 20 premium DE blades. The Caesar shave FAR BETTER than the best cartridge razor made, the fusion. DE safety razors don't clog, shave closer, shave more comfortably and you can buy the razor and twenty blades for less than a fusion cartridge pack. If you are going from cartridge to DE safety razor I recommend the Henson AL13 mild or medium, or the Leaf Twig. I own both of these razors and they are very beginner friendly and you will not cut yourself. I also do head shaves with the Henson and Twig. I prefer the henson slightly more than the twig because it's a more traditional DE razor, but it's unique design prevents cuts, nicks, weepers.

I got rid of cartridge a long time ago because I got tired of it ripping my hair out rather than cutting it, especially on the jaw line / chin area. Absolutely horrible feeling. I initially tried the Supply Co 2.0 stainless injector blade Safety Razor and it was literally a night an day difference. The supply was so much more forgiving for my face and so much more pleasurable to use. I've even used it quite a bit with just water, no shaving cream and it was just fine. It obviously works better with a shave soap but it is manageable if you only have 5 minutes to get the job done. Then I shaved for a long time with a straight razor as my daily driver and man, that was the pinnacle of awesome. Recently I picked up the DE safety razor to give it a try. It is very hard to say if I prefer the straight razor over the DE. I love both of them. I can get a closer shave with a lot less effort with the DE, but there is still something to be said about the straight razor. The straight razor shaves like nothing else. With a good 3 pass shave with either, I can go 2-3 days without shaving. I could never do that with a cartridge if I wanted to. I still felt stubble and visibly saw stubble after the shave with a cartridge razor. I think I am leaning more towards the DE razor as my favorite as of right now... probably only because I am a little rusty with the straight razor. I think I still prefer the straight razor overall, but the DE is soooo good.

Safety razors definitely make shaving more fun compared to carts, so I can only imagine what the straight razor feel would be like. I’m the guy who can’t be bothered with a straight razor just cuz it’s gonna be too time consuming for me at this stage in my life. Perhaps when I have more time in hand, I would definitely want to give them a proper crack.

Brother you are exactly correct on why so many so called DE Shaving Enthusiasts always says cartridge razors are bad because I have seen so many DE shavers I am not going to mention their names but whenever they do the comparison they always go over the same spot over and over again which doesn't allow the cartridge razor to perform. I mean the Mach 3 or the fusion are such great razors and to use that razor you must use it properly instead so shaving the same spot over and over again. People should see your comparison video instead of those so called DE shaving enthusiasts

I went back to a DE razor years ago from a Gillette Fusion simply because of the cost of cartridges. I still had a DE razor from years previous and 1 remaining blade, and was surprised just how good a shave it gave. You can buy a good DE razor and box of 10 blades for less than a pack of 8 Fusion cartridges. Just need blades? Can buy 50 DE blades for less than £10, or 48 Fusion cartridges for £108. No contest.

@johnsuffill6520 agreed mate. The trouble is when some people making DE shaving into a hobby of buying multiple soaps, brushes, razors, blades, pre-shaves and aftershave products. It ends up being more expensive. One really needs not more than 2-3 good razors for the sake of variety and stop.

Using safety razor vs cartridge I went to safety razor because Gillette has got the best blade on the market but are far far far to expensive. The safety razor is cheap dangerous and gets a great shave it has zero forgiveness though. I used to shave my head with lotion and it worked great tried it with safety razor. Looked like my head got in a knife fight with a midget. Angles for head shavers are critical.

Sounds like a technique issue, bad DE razor, or bad blades. I have been shaving my head with a double edge razor for 20 years and rarely cut myself…it’s been years since I last cut myself and it was because I was using blades that didn’t work well in my razor. Try an adjustable razor like a Merkur Progress, Gillette Fatboy, or a Gillette Slim with Astra blades. Those are my three main razors and my main blades. You can dial down the setting if you feel too much blade. I think it would be very hard to cut yourself on low settings with any of the razors I mentioned.

Why switch in my case? I never had ingrown hair or irritation and I prefer not to go against the grain 🤷🏻‍♂️ I simply don't buy the claim that cutting the hair slightly UNDER the skin level will deliver a LESS smooth shave than the DE cut AT skin level. If cost is the only advantage left for me, then why switch? A hundred dollars more a year are worth the greater convenience, for me. It would be different if the DE shave were ACTUALLY smoother than the cartridge, but I simply don't buy that, sorry 🤷🏻‍♂️

Great to hear mate. I’m the same as you. Carts never bothered my skin and I don’t think DE shave better than carts, specially quality razors like Schick & Gillette. It’s literally better for people with sensitive skin imo. End of the day, one’s gear comes down to personal preferences.

@@allydz thank you for an honest opinion without prejudice. In fact, in all honesty, I would switch, if a safety razor could deliver a smoother shave. My goal is the smoothest possible shave, not necessarily convenience. I just can't see how shaving at skin level, can feel smoother than picking up the hair with that first blade 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@tommasosantojanni Oh the DE is definitely smoother when u getting rid of a weeks worth or more, you won’t feel any tugging like the carts, however for regular shavers; they are both great ways to shave. @@allydz thanks for helping me understand. By smoother I mean the feel AFTER you shave, not WHILE you shave. If a safety razor could deliver a smoother skin, at the end of the shave, then I'll switch. Very happily too! I don't have any prejudice. My goal is the smoothest possible result for others to touch, because my 8 yrs old daughter won't kiss my checks, because I'm scratchy. Kindly, help me understand (I'm not trolling, this is an honest question): how can safety razor deliver a smoother skin to touch than a cartridge? The first blade of the cartridge pulls up the hair, and the second blade cuts it BELOW the skin level. The DE cuts only AT skin level. For reference, I shave every morning, I never have any irritation, I never had any ingrown hairs, I do NOT shave against the grain (to avoid exposing the root of the hair, in the long run) and the cartridge does not scratch or pull (I change it ever week). In other words, I'm content with all variables. I would very happily switch to improve the feel of my skin for others (smoother to the touch).
@allydz
@allydz 7 ай бұрын
@@tommasosantojanni This is purely based of my experience and I will use logic without bias. While cartridge works well, Safety razors leave the skin feeling super smooth. Many reasons here: 1. The pre-shave and soaps are easy superior than just using standard foams. They definitely help. 2. Shaving against the grain with a safety razor doesn't cause ingrowns or irritation; instead you have a closer shave as it's still shaving skin level. 3. Using a shaving brush also exfoliates the skin so well. I never believed this stuff works, but God knows I was wrong. I also tried using pre-shave, soap, etc but switched to cartridges instead of a DE. Cartridge razors clogged cuz of the fat level in the soaps, so foams + cartridge & soap + safety razors are combos to use. Happy to field more questions but hope this helps. Also I'm not big on switching personally, instead I alternate between both shaving systems.
