@lsmart Жыл бұрын
I cannot fathom how anyone could pick another tenor as the greatest ever. Besides the deafening power of his voice, the ability of his high notes to grow in power (which no other singer could do), and the sheer richness of his voice from top to bottom, it is his singing that REALLY has no equal. This is just one of dozens of arias and songs for which the Caruso performance is the best, simply because literally every syllable is perfectly phrased, sung with the perfect tempo and emotion, and yet musically perfect as well. Unlike the Corellis and Martinellis who sacrificed musical perfection for emotional impact, and the Bjorlings and Schipas, who sacrificed emotional fervor to get musical perfection, Caruso managed to get perfection in both. And I say all this despite being a Luciano fanatic.

You are correct. Caruso's voice was trained and retained its magic. Lanza was "too important" to stick around for any training. He wanted to belt, get a check, and then have a belt. A prima donna with zero discipline.
@sugarbist2 жыл бұрын
@@cjosborne9430 In actuality , Lanza did train with Enrico Rosati for about 15 months. Rosati was initially enthused by Lanza and said, for 34 years since Gigli, I have been waiting for a voice like this. There have been many other positives written about Lanza's voice. However, Rosati also claimed that Lanza was not disciplined, showing up late for lessons, claiming that a young lady kept him up all night, showing up hungover at times and refusing to learn solfeggi. Rosati became frustrated with Lanza's behavior. In a way I feel fortunate that we had Lanza's great voice, but also a little cheated because he never truly had an operatic career. Even in this O Sole Mio, the recording sounds enhanced and if you listen closely, Lanza sings ''Manario'' Sole` instead of Manato Sole and doubles the consonant in sole as solle at about 4.00. The double consonant is not a big thing, but for me the ''Manario Sole'' is annoying. Still a great voice. In My Opinion, If Lanza had the discipline of a Corelli, Gigli, Volpi or Del Monaco, he might have become a great operatic tenor. Enjoy

Incidentally, Lanza was always humble when compared to Caruso- around the time of his first movie he said "I wish they (the critics) wouldn't compare me to Caruso. I've got a long way to go before I even rate a mention in the same breath as Caruso." He echoed the same thoughts many other times. Show me another tenor, though, who was better equipped in voice and appearance to portray Caruso in a tribute film.
@cjosborne94302 жыл бұрын
Mario Lanza had a powerful voice. But, it was so untrained, and he was so undisciplined, that it becomes annoying over time. ML (fake name) fought with everyone, never took good advice, and was a general pain in the posterior. IF he had the discipline to train, and learn, and practice, he might have become great over time. He was SO popular and SO successful that he "ran away" from Hollywood and relocated in Rome, Italy (where his parents were never from, his mother was from Abruzzo, and his father was from Molise) so even his "pouts" didn't make sense).

Interestingly, I think it was thinking and analyzing Caruso's recordings that made me take so long to realise that Caruso's voice was so good. The poor recording quality got on my nerves when I analyzed, I think just letting the voice take you to heaven without paying too much attention to it. I think it's a wonderful thing when a singer can you make you sit back and enjoy rather than pay attention to every detail; it's part of why I love Pavarotti and Caruso so much.
@valeriedavidson27852 жыл бұрын
I think Mario was the greatest. I was a teenager when he was famous and his voice took me to heaven. I never could understand why people thought Pavarotti was special. He did nothing for me.
@mardav3311 жыл бұрын
Hearing all the comparisons, it sounds to me that Mario's voice is a little deeper and stronger than the others, maybe because of the quality of the recordings. Mario Lanza will always be my favorite. He had more feeling in his music.
@cjosborne94302 жыл бұрын
Lanza was also untrained and undisciplined, so he "made up for it in raw emotion." If he had the discipline to not fight with every human being on earth, he would have gone far. But, he was a skunk and that counts for something. Caruso was real and it shows in his strong voice. Lanza was loud. There is a difference between strong and loud.
