One of the guys knew of an unused, not connected to anything, old exterior metal stairs unit, lying on the ground, amongst weeds, abandoned in the open yard of some unoccupied place. He turns up one night with a small open tray trailer, borrows it, ties it on the trailer. Takes it to the community hall set where it got used for a few weeks of filming etc,, then returned it in good condition to where he found it ! My shady cousin bought a "1974" Chevy Vega from a private seller in the late '70s. I had been doing a lot of repair work on Vegas in those days and after his purchase, he had me check it out for him. First thing I noticed was it wasn't a '74 like he said. It was a 71 or 72 (totally different front sheet metal) and manual transmission shifter). He got the title out and the VIN on the dash and the one on the title didn't match. He asked what he should do. I told him that legally he needed to call law enforcement and they'd probably end up taking the car. He called the guy he bought it from and was immediately ghosted by the seller. I'm not sure what he ended up doing with the car, but I know he never called the cops. I've asked him a few times over the years, but he never would say what he did with it. It just goes to Moore Licensing, Inc., more regulations and more restrictions and more local governments being able to charge the business $10,000 a year to be certified with a Vin scanner that requires a subscription. At the end of the day we move further and further away from freedom, when we over regulate every single aspect of society, in order to prevent outliers like this. If you make every single car dealer in the country, have to pony up for one of the special scanners, Every single car dealer in the country has to pay whatever confiscatory rate the manufacturer demands for access to the system. A great example of this would be a 2005 Ford F350 that throws error codes that can only be read at the Ford dealership and nowhere else by no one else …. And the dealerships pay millions of dollars a year for the right to be able to read those codes…. Which in turn, makes it harder and harder for independent mechanics to compete.

I have a rebuilt (salvage) Jeep in AZ and the interior dash was replaced, so the VIN by the A pillar is NOT the VIN on the Frame (which matches the title). Despite me telling the emissions people and the occasional LEO of this fact, they STILL ignore me and then have all sorts of problems trying to interact with the Jeep. I once asked if I could rip out that incorrect VIN and / or install a tag that says "see frame" but I've been told (not sure if this is true) that failing to display the VIN in this location is illegal, as is displaying an incorrect VIN. So... Sometimes laws and people who employ them can't understand reality. I knew all this when I purchased the vehicle as the seller was upfront about it (only neglected to skip the part about the failing head gasket) and I've mostly rebuilt it since then, but I cannot understand how ANY car dealership could resell a vehicle such as this and NOT have committed fraud. This seems to me to be not only a civil, but possibly criminal case that the DA and State regulators should investigate.

Steve, I once bought a boat from a major boat manufacturers dealer of the same licenced dealership and 9 months later a bailiff shows up at my home asking if I have a certain ski boat. I confirm that I do and that I bought it from said dealer. He asks if boat is around and I say its at my vacation property, why? He says there is a registered lien on the boat and the lender has not been paid and he is to seize the boat. Well that was the end of that conversation as boat was at my vacation property in the US. I performed a liens search and sure enough there was a lien from the previous owner that was set to expire in 30 days. I went to the dealer and rather than dealing with the lien they waited to see the lien expire and not be renewed. Not the correct way to deal with it but I fortunately did not have “my boat” seized. If you buy something from proper dealership you really should not have to worry that the title of said item does not have a prior encumbrance, bad vin, stolen or outstanding loans, otherwise whats the purpose of that business over just buying from me or you?

I'm not positive but, from watching auto repair videos I'm pretty sure the vin is also in the computer . Also,in NY we have to do a yearly inspection. Part of that inspection is being hooked to the state computer through your computer to verify it's the right vehicle . It's also to read your computer to see if you have any codes activated .
@asjmpickle Жыл бұрын
What do the codes have to do with inspection?
@chrisfreemesser5707 Жыл бұрын
@@asjmpickle In New York if your car has a CHECK ENGINE light on it will typically fail inspection. Reading the codes tells the inspector what the problem is, and there are certain problems that can trip a warning light but NOT cause an inspection failure (ABS problems for one)
@asjmpickle Жыл бұрын
@@chrisfreemesser5707 man that sounds awful. Here they only check for safety things, do your lights work, do your tyres hold air, is your suspension the right height and type, do your brakes work, for some reason do you have an LSD spool or welded diff? Our brake machine will freak out... But a check engine light or engine failure is my problem and mine alone lmao.
@chrisfreemesser5707 Жыл бұрын
@@asjmpickle They check those basic safety things here too. NY does emissions testing as well as basic safety for cars less than 25 years old, and given the fact that most things that will trip the check engine light are emissions-related that's why it being on is an inspection issue

I presume the VIN is usually stamped on parts that can't be easily replaced. However, I've seen on some brands the VIN was stamped on a couple things that could be replaced like a door or engine. I wonder if that's ever caused someone grief where their vehicle was presumed stolen because someone had installed a reclaimed part from the junkyard. Sure, it'd probably eventually get sorted out when the other VINs are found, but it might cause a lot of grief in the short term.

Vin will be on many things more for matching the right part to the car for traceability requirements for safety and emissions parts. Vins get etched in several places on the body. There are regulations on how and where they get etched down to even how deep the etching is. The ones that I can think off hand where they are if you are replacing the part the vehicle would be totaled and not drivable. They tend to be interior to the car so it can't be corroded away also. Pull off trim panels look under carpets and you will find them. Durango and grand Cherokee slide the passenger seat forward and look in the window.

I almost bought a BMW Z4 from Cavana ~3 years ago. It was a 2017 which they shipped to me from Texas. It looked flawles on the "internet". When it arived, it looked like the thing had been rallied in gravel, the entire front bumper was scrached and pitted as well as the sidewalls behind the tires. The left side of the car had brand new tires and the right side had old bald tires. No shat, on a RWD sports car... how dangerous is that. I immediatly rejected it, went on Car Max and picked up one in absolutly perfect shape.

Might be me, but as a car dealer/broker one of the first things you do is search it's history online for anything out of the ordinary ... stuff like milage, possible accidents, reports of being stolen etc. and to be sure if stuff like VINs are correct (that's why they were introduced, right?) They were at fault by buying it at the first place, then selling it on without checking it (to be sure no mistakes were made), they should own up and pay out no further questions asked... How would they have handled it if a cop wandered the plot and ran into this issue? Who would they blame? The cop for spotting it/buying it and checking it? The Salesman who brought it in? The original "owner"? "A flaw in the system? -I'm guessing everything as long as we can keep the money, right? PS. What would the outcome be if it turned out to be IDK, a fake Maserati shell with a copied VIN mounted on a... cheap (sub)frame like a Ford Taurus or something similar

The '74 Mustang II were junk the day they came off the assembly line. Just sayin' :) I know because I almost the same thing you did with a '74 Mustang II. I bought one that ran but was falling apart at 80K miles. I couldn't believe how poorly the "new and improved Mustang II was built.... I searched around town and found a nice looking red II with an engine that long ago had failed. Owner was thrilled to get $50 for it. I swapped engines and ended up with a car that at least ran & looked good. I lucked out and made a few bucks selling it afterwards.
