Carve a Kuksa Cup - Woodworking Wisdom

Join Ben as he carves a traditional Kuksa cup. A Kuksa cup is a wooden cup designed to be hung from a belt or backpack. This multifunctional cup is primarily used as a drinking vessel, but also as a collection pot for foragers and explorers. Traditionally hand carved from green timber, we are going to speed things up by using the bandsaw and power carving techniques.

If you mark it out first then hollow it before cutting the outside shape you can accommodate any errors in the hollowing.

This is really nécessite to boilled in salted water any wood when doing cup?

Hi François, Ben says: "It is recommended that you boil the cup to sterilise and help with the drying process. As this piece was green (wet) Cherry, boiling it will drive out the sap and, if dried slowly will help prevent cracking as the wood shrinks." I hope this helps 🙂

Hi Kathy, Ben says: "The regular and mini ball gouge are fantastic tools for roughing out spoons and measuring cups. They also leave a great finish so less sanding!"

Interesting! Why no milk? Milk with coffee or tea?

Hi PhilipJ, Ben says: "I suggest no milk just to keep the bacteria at bay. Dairy products go rancid very quickly and we don't want to leave traces of it behind as the cup won't stand up to the washing up process." Hope that helps.

Why use a grinder instead of a forstner bit.

Hi Crackerjack, Ben says: "Great idea, you could use a forstner bit to clear the waste. It would also act as a good reference as a depth stop. We have used the mini ball gouge attached to a grinder on this project to showcase what the tool is capable of."

Hi Roger, yes they are traditionally hand carved, but we decided to speed things up a little and introduce some power carving.
