I am enjoying your videos. My dad had a yankee screwdriver like that. I haven’t thought about it in 40 years. It was fun to see and bring back memories of working on our boat together.

In the early 80's I worked as an apprentice installing very expensive cabinetry. First, we used the "drill motor", then soaped up the screw, and used a Yankee screwdriver to set the screw. If that gets away from you, a lot of damage can occur in a very short amount of time. By the mid 80's everyone used corded screw drivers that seemed to weigh about 8 pounds, and the fancy Phillips head screws. Thank goodness for lightweight cordless tools...

Great show. I noticed that you are using a Yankee screw driver which is great to see. They do have a disadvantage of requiring a straight on approach to the screw head which can be difficult especially in this application. I suggest you try a brace with a screw driver bit. Much easier.

If you are in need of any hardware, I came across a complete set of 12 1/2 bronze hardware that was beautifully cast by Thomas Lie Nielsen in 1990. Purchased for a boat project that I never started.

That is a nice trick with the small steam box on the plank end. Thank you again for another informative video. I don't recall, but didn't you treat the inside of the centerboard case with epoxy? Take care and have a good week ahead.

A few questions. When using fewer station m molds and battens, rather than a mold for each station, are you taking out the hollow in the forward and aft ends of the boat such that you don't need to hollow out the garboard? As I look at the aft station molds there is definitely hollow. I like your method since it simplifies things, but hollow does help a boat track better...

is the garboard plank flush to the frames across its whole width? Seems you would have to hollow the plank some. Am I missing something?

Would it work if you made a full side of planks and then copied them for the other side?
@TheArtofBoatBuilding
@TheArtofBoatBuilding 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Henry, That is essentially what is done. After cutting out a plank and fittings for the starboard side I use it as a pattern for the port side. It’s important to hang each plank on both sides as one works to keep the boat true. Also need that plank to spile the next plank. Thanks for watching!

Nice to see a clear, patient explanation of plank-on-frame building. I'll be following along for sure. Is that a spike knot on the outboard edge of the garboard about five frames from the transom? What's the plan for that?
@TheArtofBoatBuilding
@TheArtofBoatBuilding 4 жыл бұрын
Isn't a spike knot per say, spot where grain changed and a chipped out by the planer. It's a very shallow spot so I'll fill it with fairing compound. Thanks!

Ok you know I've been watching your videos for quite some time now, I'm convinced that you could build a much bigger boat. Say some 20+feet long. Do you have any plans on doing that? I've used what you've explained on my model wooden boats that I could not figure out after reading and listening to others explain it, If you ever give up on the art thing(which you shouldn't) you could have a new career as a ship Wright. Keep up the great work.

Why isn't there some kind of seal in the garboard and transom joint?
@thomasrice409

As I look at the Haven plans, I do have a concern. Except for the keel rabbet next to the center board bed logs and the stem, there is no landing for the garboard plank. The half-inch plank merely abuts the keel. To my mind, this presents a problem. Now, if you are really expert at cutting such a rabbet and the plank as well, I you could get a good fit. But I worry that I'm not that expert and that the garboard seam will always leak a bit. Also, with a glued up keel --- I too am having trouble sourcing a large piece of air-dried white oak --- you will not get much if any swelling across the keel. So, the fit will all depend on the swelling of the plank. To remedy this, I'm thinking of modifying the keel such that I will have a landing for the entire garboard plank. So, I'm trying to figure out how I might do this. Any comments on this?
@thomasarussellsr
@thomasarussellsr 4 жыл бұрын
A router, follow the curve of the prepared keel with an angled or dovetailed bit (possibly a square bit with a shim on one side of the base plate to tip the router?). Or form the garboard plank, tighten 8it to the keel with clamps, crawl underneath with a pencil and scribe the line to cut down to, then take off the garboard and chisel/rabbit plane down to the line.

Did you ever address taking the hollow out of the garboard plank?
@thomasrice409
@thomasrice409 4 жыл бұрын
My experience with carvel planking is limited to 1/2 inch quarter sawn white oak. When steamed --- 7 to 8 inches wide --- the plank would swell 5/16 inch or better. Which makes me wonder how you could steam a small couple feet of the plank without distorting the planks fit to the rabbet, with the steamed section pushing the rest of the plank away from the rabbet?
@TheArtofBoatBuilding

Thomas Rice cedar is very soft compared to white oak. Therefore it is very pliable.

I used to use one of those "Yankee" screw drivers but it would slip out of the slotted screw head and dent the adjacent wood. Don't use it anymore.
@TheArtofBoatBuilding
@TheArtofBoatBuilding 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Stanly, I understand that frustration. The cause of the driver slipping out of the screw head is because the the driver head was not properly matched to the screw head. I explain this at the beginning of S2-E42, Chain Plates & Deck Canvas. Here is a link. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zni5lYiGedeZe6M What you use is of course your choice, as is mine. I love my Yankee. Fast way to drive screws by hand where it's important to feel the tension as to not over tighten. Thanks For watching. Cheers, Bob

I don't see any kind of sealing compound between the Garboard and the frames. Please comment.
@TheArtofBoatBuilding
@TheArtofBoatBuilding 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen, Carvel planking needs to move. The wood expands when getting wet (taking up) and off season when out of the water it will dry out a bit. So, there isn't any sealing between the planks and frame so the boat can breathe. Thanks for watching. Bob

Stagger your screws ?
@thomasrice409
@thomasrice409 4 жыл бұрын
Why build a wooden box to steam the garboard end? Just put it in a poly bag. 10 times faster and actually better. Stop steaming and clamp the bag and wood down. Let it sit for a week till the swelling goes down and it doesn't distort the overall fit. Then tighten to keel and fasten.

FYI you accidentally left out the slotted in your description of the screws you were using. As you are aware flat head refers to the shape of the screw you are using the driver shape in this case would be slotted so this would mean you are using a 1"- #8 flat head "slotted" screw. Also some wood workers and shipwrights prefer to use a pan head screw as they tend not to split the wood as the angle on a flathead can.
