Heyo! Welcome to my tutorial on how to design a symmetrical carved tile using only geometric and organic shapes. In this series of videos we will be creating a symmetric carved tile using 5 or more shapes. 3 of those shapes must be overlapping each other, creating 3 distinct planes. You will also need to include 3 natural or manmade textures to be carved into 3 or more of your shapes.
I designed this lesson to teach you 2 very important facets of carving: #1) how to carve order in your designs so that a shape looks like it’s in the front, another looks like it is in the farthest back, and a third shape looks like it is in the middle, creating 3 planes. #2) how to carve details into your work such as texture. Carving is an important tool of a sculpture, allowing the artist to etch details into their sculpture to create complex details in their work.
I hope you enjoy this lesson!

TEACHER INFO:
Carved Tile Brainstorming Worksheet: www.teacherspa...
This brainstorming worksheet will walk your ceramics students through designing a symmetrical design using a minimum of 5 shapes. They'll then carve 3 textures onto 3 of their shapes.
This lesson will help students with 3 main facets of carving:
1) Carving multiple (3) planes with overlapping shapes.
2) Learning to carve shapes into forms.
3) Using carving tools to create specific natural or man-made textures.
These 3 facets of carving are essential stepping stones for students to learn before attempting more advanced sculptures.
This is usually my 2nd project in Ceramics 1 with mostly 9th graders.
