Thank you Yo-Mama, and welcome to the tribe. Bone is a great thing to start scrimshaw with and can be obtained easily from almost any pet store.

Hi! Commenting on your new video to ask some advice. I have a whale bone I’d like to try to skrimshaw. I’ve sanded it but it is still quite porous. I read online you could rub beeswax on it to make a smooth surface to carve. Is this something you would recommend?

Hello Meg! We’re so happy that you found our channel. The bee’s wax works in some cases but depends on how porous the bone is. Panbone( jaw bone) is quite dense and works well while other whale bones work better for things like handles and tools. If you have lots of large pores and really want to scrim you might try sanding it and let the dust fill in the pores wipe super glue over it and sand again while still wet. You might need to repeat this process until all pores are filled. Good luck and let us know how it works out.
