Well, in my opinion Jaguar just did it right with thier design language in the past ten years. Yes the older ones are more iconic, but as the first XF was introduced back in 2008, I was really in love with it. As far as the front end it does in certain areas look like other lesser cars but thats where it ends. The rear is stunning, setting it apart from everything. The tail lights for instance were designed to replicate the Jaguars claws. The top with its 2 blacked out glass sunroofs gets its cues from a yacht's upper deck. Looking at it from the side is a Jaguar in motion. The L from XJL refers to long wheelbase giving the rear passengers 5 inches of extra leg room. Top that off with the maroonish shade of Caviar Metalic and you have an automobile that exudes ever current style and class. Also at no extra cost are the never-ending compliments!

Mrs Wizard, it's known as the 'leaping cat' not the leaping Leopold. Interesting factoid, Jaguar where originally called Swallow side-cars Limited (they started, like Rolls-Royce) making side-cars for motorcycles. They shortened this to SS, with the pre-war cars being the SS90 (Horsepower) and the jaw droppingly beautiful SS100. During the War they made the alluminium skin panels for Spitfires and Typhoons. After the War, Sir William held a meeting in the pub with his Engineers and stated that the SS brand didn't sit well after the atrocities committed by the ShutzStaffel (SS) during the war, so a name change was needed. Sir William rather liked the idea of naming the Company after a big cat which he viewed as sleek, elegant and fast. and proposed the name of Puma. One of his Engineer's piped up and said that the name Jaguar was far more sexy, and with a rye smile, Sir William agreed and a legend was born!

I have a 2009 XJ8, and it’s the last year of the classic, traditionally styled Jaguar. I do think mine looks a thousand times more beautiful than the newer style. But the car wizard is right about the interior. The newer XJ interior is in a class by itself. And that supercharged 5.0 will run circles around my non-supercharged 4.2. The 4.2 is still plenty fast, however. My 2009 has over 140,000 miles on it. And it has required a little bit of work. A previous owner switched the air suspension over to coilovers, a common modification that makes the car much more reliable. I’ve had to replace the upper control arms and tie rod ends on the front suspension. And the thermostat housing started self destructing, requiring a new thermostat and housing. While I was in there, I replaced the water pump, as that is a known weak spot, as well as some hard to reach hoses that were accessible when I had the intake manifold off. Overall, I have found Jaguar’s reputation for being unreliable has been greatly exaggerated, and I will hop in this car and take it anywhere. I put around 90 miles a day on it during my drive to work. Easily one of my favorite cars I’ve owned. And mine has the leaping Jaguar (not leopard 😄) on the hood.

As a mechanic (and not just a parts-changer), you are being paid to repair/replace what the customer requests, and aside from pointing out (usually in the form of an estimate) any other areas which may need attention-- especially if they are safety related, you do what is requested and do it to the best of your ability. After all, the shop you work for is responsible for any warranty on your work... and "taking care" of items that you happen to notice just because you are able to fix them opens you up to a world of liability. There a lack of real style to them IMHO and they often look like someone;s idea of what you'd expect to see in a sci-fi movie with styling features that look like rocket launchers to me and HUGE butt-ugly grilles that are AWFUL for their drag coefficient ! Give me a SAAB 9000/9-5 or Rover SD1 any day of the week (classic larger hatchback styling) and WHERE did all the estate cars/station wagons go ? They're very useful for those who only need occasional serious lugging capacity. I used to be able to get the smaller version of a serious PA/Sound Reinforcement rig in my Ford Cortina Estate complete with stage wedge monitors, perfect for smaller pub gigs and the like instead of having to use a proper van. It was even possible to sleep in the back, stretched out too, so OK as an occasional 'camper' too. The other thing with 'modern styling' is that cars end up big on the outside but small on the inside, exactly the reverse of the SAAB 9000's I ran.

@@calthorp never heard of engine bay wiring disintegrating like that, since they didn’t use biodegradable wiring harnesses like mercedes did at the time, however the cooling hoses and other plastic parts do go brittle, my xk8 is very reliable but every now and then when it breaks it is more expensive to repair than a miata would be, however i class them on totally different levels of car, neither worse than the other just good at different things and incomparable

Thank you wizard for being one of the few trustworthy mechanics out there. I just wish you were closer to Wisconsin. I've found a guy a trust to work on my Audi but I'm having a hard time finding someone I trust with my Subarus. We need more mechanics like you.

If I saw that in my rear view mirror, I'd know that it's a Jaguar. While a 20 year old Jag is nice to look at, it's still a 20 year old design; no company can (or should) never update its styling.

@@h7pubg Really? They still have big bulging headlights and tall windows? The early 911's look incredibly dated; I doubt many people buy older ones for their styling. They sell because of branding. Oh, and because they're really good cars.

Old guy here. The "classic" Jag styling was held on to for way too long. It appealed to like 5 people, which is why sales kept going down. It's not only good that they got rid of it, but necessary.

Mr Wizard. As a kid I fell in love with Jaguar when they had the Arthur Daley look (please look that up), especially the XJR supercharged. I cant feel any love for the style you present here even though it's obviously far superior.

One thing Ford did while they had Jaguar under their "umbrella", they kept them looking like Jags. Now it's hard to tell any of them from any other car.

Jaguar styling was progressive and modern during William Lyons' time in charge. The pastiche years started with the XJ40 and were compounded during Ford's ownership. They probably hurt Jaguar more than helped. That the modern looking F-Pace SUV became the fastest-selling Jaguar in the firm's history probably tells us a lot. Also I'm thrilled they've gotten rid of the Leaper. They look bizarre on anything from the XJS and series 1 XJ onwards. If you want a good giggle Google the aftermarket versions available for current Jags.

My F-Type isn't that traditional "design language" of Jaguar past, but I would argue it is unique and iconic. I like the newer Jag look, except for the revised headlights of the F-Type 2022+ model years.

Yep, absolutely hate the unnecessary upsells. The inspection process is important for CYA. That way you don’t miss any important safety issues and have good reason for disclaimers.

When it comes to servicing vehicles you generally get what you pay for. I've had a carburetor dipped in a degreaser and tried to bill as overhauled. But working as an aircraft engine overhaul inspector made me a little wizer than the average customer. I've even caught a licensed mechanic knocking off flywheel teeth with a chisel, because it was a slow day and he wanted to sell me a new flywheel and starter. It pays to be observant and at least a little knowledgeable. A shop like Omega is a fantastic place to find.

The reason why Jaguar dropped the leaping cat was due to fuel economy hit but also due to the new pedestrian crash tests (apparently they tested a plastic version that would break off in an impact) - the official Jaguar reason is buyer tastes changed so they stop it

Lovely car, but I have to say nowhere near the character and “specialness” of the jag. Running cost scares are warranted but massively overinflated thanks to the internet. I would always run by the ethos of buy the car you want because if it makes you happy who cares if it costs you a couple hundred a year more than one that you wouldn’t mind owning
@h7pubg Жыл бұрын
if you like the previous 4.2 model, I would get one without hesitation, the parts are not wildly expensive, engine is incredibly reliable, so is transmission, regularly see them with 200-250k miles with minimal service, ONLY large issue is air suspension, which can be converted and has been by most people at this point, for around $1000
