The gas station octane numbers are different because they represent different values. 98 octane in Europe is comparable to 93 in the US, 95 in Europe is equivalent to 91 in the US. This is due to Europeans displaying the RON number (Research Octane Number) and Americans displaying the average of the RON and MON (Motor Octane Number).
@atodaso1668 Жыл бұрын
Doesn't the US have 85 octane in some places?
@jowarrior Жыл бұрын
Yes 85 is available in some states mostly in high altitude locations like Colorado, Utah, Montana etc. but for most states the regular is 87 octane. The reason why there is 85 in high altitude has to do with the lower air density making knock to be less of a problem with lower octane rated fuel. It’s also cheaper.
@balkanca Жыл бұрын
Correct, they use RON in most other countries and we use MON in the United States. So our 87 is their 91, our 91 is their 95, etc.

In Europe, the octane rating on the pump is simply the RON figure. America, uses the average of the RON and the MON figures. So 97 octane in Europe is roughly 91 Octane in U.S. 102 octane though is still higher than what I've ever seen at a public pump. Another interesting video Wizard!

That guy was super nervous. Wizard asked him to come by and trash some German cars so it's understandable. I used to have 3 different Audis. Around 100tkm-150tkm. They never had any serious problems. The GM made Opel I had was having more problems. Yes at some model years like in 08-12 they had oil leaking issues but those are long fixed. All manufacturers have their own issues.
@BigBearBjorna Жыл бұрын
Ya sometimes it feels like car wizard has an agenda against alot of german cars. This is just anecdotal information, but While i would say german cars as a whole are not excellent in terms of durability, Ford, GM and Chrysler are not any better. My friends families has had a few american made cars and i cannot say they are any better according to their experience. They are big gas guzzlers that do not offer anything special in terms of reliability. We have had a few germans (mostly Audi) and they’ve been better or the same in terms of durability. My first car will definetely be a European or japanese, even though american cars are great in alot of ways. I think people believe audis are unreliable because they cost alot to fix in the USA. That analogy could also explain why American cars are not seen as reliable in Europe, as they are more expensive to buy and fix here. If a repair cost is more, people will believe the damage was more severe, even if that may not be the case.
@betterbeavailable Жыл бұрын
@@BigBearBjorna Exactly. I don't think Audi, BMW and Merc are pinnacle of reliability but that doesn't mean they are noticeably bad in general. I only have positive things to say from Audi and BMW I've owned. If they have spotless maintenance record then I wouldn't expected major problems. I don't know if Americans neglected maintenance or what's the deal but it is important to change oil regularly especially in small displacement turbo engines. I like Wizard but he has a vendetta against German cars which is very unprofessional.

@@betterbeavailable Pretty good experinces here too. i like audi alot, atleast from my experience. My dad has had his A6 TDI through 210.000 km, and while it has had its first few problems recently, it has been nothing major. My friends dad had an A4 that he sold at like 350.000km, which the new owner drove like 60.000km more before scrapping it. My friend recently picked up an old A6 from his grandma and while it has been driven very litely and has been maintained extremely well (basically only 10.000km on average per year) it is crazy how the car is in such great shape after 23 years and 200.000 km. The gear box is smooth as butter and the suspension and clutch feels great. like a new car Almost except for the rust. It is a gas guzzler though with the 2.4 V6 but it is great in every other way. My first will be something like a Volkswagen Golf 1.9 TDI, slow but apparently reliable and quite fun.

There are two different laboratory test procedures to measure octane in gasoline - the Research Octane (RON) method, and the Motor Octane (MON) method. Most countries use one or the other, the United States uses an average of both, which is called the Anti-Knock Index (AKI). Germany just uses RON by itself. AKI produces a rating about 4-5 lower than just RON alone, but the gasoline itself is exactly the same, just measured differently.

Here in Europe we have a quite more strict car and motorcycle Inspection System. In Portugal, there we evaluate multiple systems in the car: a. Emissions (on both Diesel and Petrol engines); b. Suspension (if there is a significant difference between left and right, which can upset car's dynamic); c. Braking (if the braking performance is up to the standards require do go on the highway, as well as parking brake); d. Lighting (if the quantity of luminescence if adequate on all beam: dipped, main, and fog; as well as all lights being operational; e. Miscellaneous (horn, wipers, wiper fluid, windows, seat belts, etc...); f. Final undercarriage inspection (watching for ball joints, suspension in general, steering, axles, etc...). You must pass on all counts. There are multiple levels of failure severity: 1. You can go, travel at full capacity, and return within 30 days to be reinspected; 2. You can go, but the car may only transport the driver, and return within 30 days to be reinspected; 3. That vehicle shall not circulate on public roads, thus you will need to tow it, and return within 30 days to be reinspected; 4. If a big change on the drivetrain, emissions, or other took place, the vehicle shall go into as Inspection of grade-B - which everything is measured and compared to the OEM standards, namely the chassis. A new car does not have to go through an inspection for the first 4 years. Then there are two cycles of 2 years. After those initial eight years, it has to go through an annual inspection. Both passenger and cargo heavy-duty vehicles, both the vehicle itself and its trailer, have to go each 6 months. Motorcycles, with a displacement above 125 cm3 (0.125L or 7.627 ci), will start a bi-annual inspection after January 1st, 2024. The English MOT is a joke compared to the Portuguese Inspection. The German TUV is the more strict I know - mainly due to the German culture, but also due to the stretches of unlimited speed at the Autobahn (German highway system).

Otherwise, people will be scammed left and right.

One reason why a straight exhange rate price comparison from the local perspective gets tricky across countries. Relying on income taxes makes the prices look lower vs relying on VAT.

The octane ratings are different. 93 octane in the US is the equivalent of 98 octane in Britain and Europe. And 91 in the US is the equivalent of 95, and 87 is the equivalent of 91. I think 98 RON (US 93) is the highest you can find in the UK. You used to be able to get higher. I think in Europe it's relatively easy to find 99 RON, more is less common, but yeah, in Europe I think you can still get up to 102, maybe 103 RON.

Not all gas stations have 98 ROZ/RON or higher, but you find it at stations from premium brands. 102 ROZ/RON is a more expensive gas in Germany normally only available from Aral and BP. Its not just Germany where you get a one year warranty on sold goods. It's consumer law in many EU countries. They may as well copy the UK ;) The states are an exception in nearly every area of 'citizen protection'.

up here in canada we use the $/L for fuel as well, $2+ is pain lol up here in alberta we got close to it last year with all the ukraine nonsense but since then its bounced around $1.10/L to $1.50/L i miss my high school days years ago when it was like $0.86/L those were the days

@@mysteryman447 How does it get to $2/L? Most oil products barely still cost 1$/L in most countries. In Europe all the rest is tax.
@mysteryman447 Жыл бұрын
@@rkan2 well other provinces can have as much as 3x the gst as alberta but we don’t refine our own oil products and when the global market shot up our costs for refining did too, we really need to invest in our own refineries

EU uses for octane rating the RON index on fuel and US AKI(R+M/2). US 93 octane is the same as EU 98 and US 91 is the same as 95.

sales tax, or value added tax in Europeland differs from country to country, in my case here in eastern europe VAT is 19% generally but for some categories of services and goods it can go to as high as 25%.

You heard the nice man he said they were going to make an exception for synthetic fuels like E85 and synthetic gasoline, turbos and E85 work great together, fuel systems would triple in price, but I see sports car staying around for awhile.

You missed an important phrase. When he said they were banning the internal combustion engine after 2035, he stated "with the exception of synthetic fuels". Currently, the World Endurance Championship for sports prototypes is using synthetic fuel. Formula 1 will be introducing synthetic fuel in the near future. Boeing is testing a synthetic fuel for its passenger aircraft. A big advantage of synthetic fuel is that you do not start with petroleum and all the impurities found in it. You can start with any biodegradable material.

Wizard, just want to take you to task re your comments on the reliability of the DS Citroen. As a former Euro workshop owner, I know from experience that the Citroen is generally more reliable than cars of the same age. You hinted at cooling ability for example but it gets every bit as hot in France in their central and southern regions as it does in the US (plus it was proven in the deserts of N Africa during testing) and through aerodynamic design where air is ducted very efficiently through the radiator etc cooling is never a problem. The engine is a very rugged hemi headed crossflow design, lowly stressed and the hydraulic system is very reliable - remember most industrial machinery for example uses hydraulics which is self lubricating and unless the high pressure lines are compromised by external corrosion which is obvious generally there is nothing to pack up and leave you stranded. Weakest mechanical part is the gearbox/ diff unit but trouble comes from abuse and lack of servicing. The beauty of these and cars of this age is their lack of electronics. I don`t trust more modern cars over 7-10 years of age. At least the purely mechanical cars give you some warning when something is wrong whereas "electronic cars" generally just stop...Lack of servicing because they were so reliable when newer, or idiots previously working on them is the biggest cause of any problem, certainly not poor design or engineering.

There are some similarities between Germany and N.S.W Australia with inspections for registration if there is anything wrong oil leaks bald tyres leaking exhaust warning lights on all have to be addressed before your vehicle will pass and on a new car you don't need an inspection until its 5 years old but there is no emissions test

Considering the higher octane rating of the fuel in Germany, it's actually cheaper than here in the U.S. I know one gas station that sells 101 octane fuel and it's something like $10/gallon.
