Literally had this happen yesterday with a 15mm nut off the shock assembly for an FJ Cruiser. I put in new Bilstein 5100s for the coilovers and the third fastener is in the back of the wheel well. When I got it loose I didn't stabilize it properly with the other hand and it dropped off the back and into the engine bay with a non-metallic "plop" meaning it either landed on some kind of boot or trapped dirt. I eventually found it though with some help. Someone flashed a light at just the right angle and happened to spot where it landed.

AAAAYYYUPPPP I know that sound all too well. I described it as marbles in a coffee can, or when it really got bad on the way to the repair shop more like a couple bowling balls in an old style metal garbage can! That was also the sound of around $1600 leaving my bank account for a used transmission from a wrecked car with allegedly "only 32k miles" and all I know is from how worn the 2nd gear synchro was, it was either in a car driven by a person completely new to stickshifts or something more like a million miles! I guess careful shifting and occasional double-clutching was livable compared to the cost of a new transmission.....

I know this sounds crazy but I had a jacked up Chevy truck come in making the wheel bearing noise one day. I put it on the lift and the second it left the ground the wheel fell completely off of the vehicle. The only thing that was holding the wheel bearing together was the weight of the vehicle on the bearing. I asked the guy how long he had been driving it like that and he said oh about six months. And this guy was on the road with the rest of us. Terrifying.

And hey, why not a third comment while I'm at it? I have an old Subaru with a non-interferance engine and the timing belt snapped on me. It was the least dramatic stall I've ever experienced. It was really, really, really weird. I didn't hear it, I didn't feel it. It happened at a stop sign. I put my car into first gear and hit the gas and nothing. I looked at the gauge cluster and saw the engine had shut off. I thought I stalled it. So I tried to turn the engine and still nothing. It took me longer than I care to admit to realize what had happened. I consider myself very fortunate.

The scariest noise I ever heard was not actually all that bad to fix. I was driving my Hyundai in winter and floored it away from the lights (don't worry its an underpowered car to start with) and this terrible very loud multi-frequency noise started. Anyway, it was the AC clutch, has sheered the rubber drive part. When the AC was off the loose centre part rattled around creating the noise. When the AC was on it was quiet.

I'll add a couple from my own experience. Failed center bearing on a Audi Quattro AWD rear drive shaft. Sounds like a machine gun under acceleration. Needs to be addressed, but not nearly as scary as it sounds. Second, and most scary. Brake dust shield rubbing on the inside of a brake disc. Absolutely terrifying, but largely innocuous. Honorable mention goes to the braking system vacuum line fed off of engine vacuum on an Audi 2.0t that sounds like a rod knock when the rubber hardens.

I had a 99 ford escort zx2, before it died. It made both of the 2 scariest noises. You explained perfectly how that car died at 70k on the motor. The shop I was taking it to were patching problems instead of fixing them entirely. It's a shame, I really liked that car when it ran well. It had the ford 2.0 ztech, just for reference. I had a automotive machine shop in Oregon rebuild a 5.4 a couple of years ago and it made noise a couple of weeks after we fixed it. He said that we should just put 15w40 and that would take care of the noise despite the customer paying $7000 for an an engine overhaul. In the end we it had to have new Ford heads put on it because the cam journals had worn enough that they were allowing to much oil pressure to bleed off to let the phazers function.

I've seen people running down the road before right before this happened. flames coming from the wheel or rear diff. Then the axle with the wheel slides out silently like you pulled a pin. Then the fun starts... Also, rear brakes will always work - with the e-brake. Though you may just about pull a muscle in your arm trying to stop a car at speed with it by yanking on it, since you have to keep the button pressed in to use it manually like that.

@@plektosgaming yeah didnt want to risk the handbrake as with no steering control as the wheel was wedged under the wing everytime it shifted the car went side to side across the lanes at its own will, so didnt use it as could of made the car lose traction even more, Potentially putting a little pressure on the handbrake could make the front of the car lift or lighen the weight that was holding the wheel to the ground, the wheel could of been released and completely drop that front corner on the ground which could catch and flip the car, and it was 6 pm on a busy motorway

@@Nordic_Mechanic normally 2 circuits on car brakes so if one fails the other can still work, however like with us if the brake pipe has been ripped and repeatedly pumping the pedal drains all the brake fluid so no hydraulic pressure to operate them, handbrake should still work but some situations its more dangerous to use it rather then not, Unless its a electric handbrake then it wont engage at all

Half-way between Phoenix and Tucson, Kerpow and the sound of the engine shedding shrapnel, then the engine sounding like an ancient International tractor. Thought I'd somehow lost the exhaust. Turned out the 3L Escape had launched a spark plug into the aether. Drove it home as a very loud 5-cyl.

Worst car noise I ever heard was my 1973 VW Thing suddenly blowing a cylinder right out of the side of the motor. Inspecting the engine, I found pieces of cylinder head and cylinder wall cluttering the engine skid guard. I was only a few blocks from a VW repair shop (this was around 1988 when such places were common), so I risked driving the Thing to the place (amazingly she started up and drove). The noise from backfires and the cylinder arm slapping in the remains of the motor were horrendous and the smoke was comically thick. I drove in to the repair garage with the mechanic looking to see what the racket was from. "I think there's something wrong with my car."

A scary noise for me would be a rod knock from that ford 302 I rebuilt during the last year, I wasted so much energy on it and it's not mine. And A scary noise I herd is a tic/knock noise from a diesel truck I have that I started using starting fluid along with propane, yeah..., to wake it up from many years of being parked. I have work to do before I can use it, and it's a vt275, an engine derivated from the powerstroke 6.0! Mouhahahaaa!! Happy Halloween!

More: My Dad finally decided to let go his beloved Opel Kadet 2.0 GSI. The guy who was going to buy it short sifted it and blew the rod bearings. I had to go pick my dad up. He lifted the hood and tried starting the engine, but it was an orchestra of clacking and squeaking noises.

If you have a squealing belt, take a spray bottle of plain water and lightly spray the belt. If the squealing stops for a few seconds and then comes back, your belt is just loose or worn. If the squealing doesn't change, then you have a bad pulley or something else wrong that needs immediate attention.

My favorite was a customer I had one Saturday. He was getting only an oil change. While draining oil I looked the truck (Ford F150 with a 5.4L)over to see what else he needed. I made a list and then made up an invoice on the Tiremaster program we use. Then I proceeded to call him out to the shop and showed him what he needed and why. The estimate was in the $800 range. he declined any of the work. Around 6 months later he shows up again at the shop. He sees me, and starts the "can I show you something" routine. I go over to look at the engine, and he asks "what's that" ? I explained that since he didn't do any of the recommended work (which included a serp belt and the tensioner), that the bearing had let go in the tensioner pulley and was now riding on the timing cover. It had cut a hole just like a hole saw would. I explained ( after I stopped laughing) that now he needed a new timing cover. I forgot what I quoted him, but, it was big $$$$. NEVER saw him again.

Couldn’t stick around for the whole thing, but it the “Wizard” is and what he says is right on the money. You should make up a real course on this Wiz, about 10 minutes devoted to each sound and the expected origin and circumstances. Nothing quite like losing a front wheel on a BIG overloaded box truck going down Ranger Hill (Near Weatherford, TX) at 70 mph. To add: Torque converter seizing because of bad or dirty transmission fluid. Also, the most common engine knocking, a misfire. With Hondas it's bad VTEC solenoid or just low on oil causing the VTEC to misbehave. And if we're already with Honda VTEC, the sound of VTEC kicking in...

The pumps on the Fords just kind of make that sound. I've had everything from 80's-90's F150's, 5 different 5.0's, etc. They just sound like that. On several of these cars you can still turn the wheel with one finger with ease, the fluid level isn't low, and they continued for another 50-60k miles without issue. In fact, on 5.0's, two things can pretty much be known for certain: 1.) The 1800 rpm, sweet, sweet, 5.0 "drone" (Excellent sound. Best sounding V8 noise of all time in my opinion) 2.) The steering pump doing it's cavitation noise or harmonic it does, and basically every "Ford guy" ignoring it, because it's normal.

Now is my time to shine! SUBARU OWNERS- If you have a car with the EJ series engine (most 90s to early 2010s and even in some current STi models) and you hear the power steering pump whining, *CHECK THE O-RING ON THE HOSE CONNECTING THE PUMP TO THE RESERVOIR. IT IS MOST LIKELY THE PROBLEM!!!!!* You need a 70A o-ring, 1/2" ID, 5/8" OD, 1/16. I have packs of these things just sitting around because it's so common.

I once heard that last sound - at about 2AM on an interstate. It was a Honda Prelude Si that had supposedly been "serviced" about a week before. No idea if it was related, but as I slowed down and veered to the side of the interstate, something in the engine bay caught fire. It didn't burn the entire car to the ground, but the engine was ...well... toast. That was a very long night.

On a 1971 Ford Galaxie 500 351W I had a perfect "rod knock" My dad, a 40+ year mechanic and two professionals concurred with me... I even used a stethoscope... i lifted the motor, pulled all of the bearings... and they were all still good. i put the engine back together and the next day someone gave me another car. So I drove the Ford onto the lawn for several months. Then my wife's transmission quit and I gave her the Ford. When I started the Ford, the alternator was seized. I replaced the alternator and belt and the "rod knock" was gone! The car ran flawlessly for a few more years and was taken out in a crash with a F250 Pickup. It was over a foot shorter in the back but still ran a treat. My wife survived the crash because the Ford was so large. I paid $100.00 for the car, drove it 15 years, and got $2000.00 for it from the insurance company because it was a classic when it was crashed, then another $100.00 from the scrap yard. Wife kept the $2000.00 For anyone chasing a "rod knock" ALWAYS DO A BELT OFF TEST BEFORE TEARING YOUR MOTOR APART!!!!! I know, my case was likely one in a million, an absoluter acoustical fluke... but what do you have to lose?

I just had the cam phaser issue. First the belt "must be bad", $114. Then it was still there later, $515 at my local shop. Now the Service Engine Soon light is on but it runs okay, I have to go 70 mph sometimes to get to work. I can see that from the video that the motor could fail eventually so thanks for the information, I'm saving up for a new (used) car at this point. Maybe I should take it back to the shop but it also needs major exhaust work so it's getting too old to keep fixing all that stuff. Happy Voting Day! Hmph!

Gotta mention that the sound of a failing component can "telegraph" and seem to be coming from the wrong place. ie. A failing differential can sound like it's coming from the front end, and it gets louder the tighter you turn. Or stethoscope a rear wheel bearing and it'll sound louder in the diff.

Oh yes, my belt squeals for a half second or so every time I fully tilt my steering wheel because that's when the power steering pump has to work the hardest. But I don't fix it, because this rarely ever happens, or if it does, it's only a fraction of a second and then it's gone (because I release the steering wheel tilt by a few millimeters). The belt's still working fine.

My car currently makes a lot of scary sounds! That is because the flex-pipe in the exhaust system that sits behind the exhaust manifold/downpipe and infront of the catalytic converter is completely rotten through, so it basically separated at that point. Now it gets louder every day. And it goes "brrb!-brrb!-brrb!" after taking the foot off the accelerator pedal, while not pressing the clutch. Yes, it's quite old (but therefore cheap to fix. Oh wow, that last sound just gave me a flashback to the Seat Leon I had a year ago. had it for 8 months and the seller had stated the timing belt and waterpump was new, but 3rd of November 2019 on my way home in heavy rain that happened to me all suddenly as well. The engine was worthless just like that, so I wish I had gone the safe way of just replacing the belt and waterpump myself. Instead I had to wreck the car cause it was too expensive to repair, which was a shame cause I really liked that car.

A bad turbo sounds pretty bad. Probably more common now since most newer cars have one.

Power steering pump whine is common in Chevy Impala’s also. Bad wheel bearings are common in these cars too.

I have 240,000 miles on my impala. I switched the power steering fluid to synthetic and that fixed that sound. The wheel bearings.. ugh. I replaced the front hubs probably 3 or 4 times. I actually have a spare on hand because it seems to happen so often.

@@ohioplayer-bl9em I replaced my wheel hubs at around 100k miles on my 2010 and have 152k on it now. I made sure to get ones with Timken bearings. So far so good on them. I replaced the struts at the same time. If I do that again I will go with KYB next time. I believe my power steering system has a slow leak in it so I just make sure to check it often. It leaks oil too but not enough for me to pay $3k on getting it fixed. Other than that and replacing the water pump I’ve only had minor problems with it. It’s been a pretty good car. It seems like one of the more mechanic friendly vehicles out there. I hope to get over 250k miles on mine.

How about "THUNK". THUNK is when you put the car into gear and you hear "THUNK" followed by a whiplash like jolt. Shut engine off and go back inside and lay down.

My old 86 Honda Accord had bad ball joints and it sounded just like the U Joint sound when you turned the wheel. The woman who had it before me ran it into the ground of course. The tires were completely bald, both ball joints were collapsed, spring was broke, and someone ran the engine hot at least once. And the frigging rotors were rusted and pads were grinding. Oh well it only cost 500$....my brother did work for a dealership at the time so I got the employee rate.

I heard the interference engine dying once. It was a 2009 Pontiac wave. The mechanic had failed to identify the pink liquid leaking from my car as Dexcool, the GM version of antifreeze. When the lower rad hose let go, the engine overheated, the cam seized up and destroyed the timing belt. The overheat warning never came on because there was no coolant. No, I wasn't the one driving. The mechanic sourced a used engine an put the car back on the road for $3600, but I really felt that he should have paid the bill. The original problem was that the lower rad hose needed to be replaced and he didn't do it even though we told him it was leaking. How much would that have cost?

Timing belt issue: when shopping for my new car I made sure it was a timing chain and a non-interference engine. Any cars that weren't, I walked away.

Worst sound I ever heard was the number 3 piston collapsing in my 1974 Triumph Dolomite Sprint. Fortunately managed to shut it down before the con rod separated entirely. Ended up getting a professional engine rebuild on that, which was the single most expensive thing I've ever done on a car even with mates rates.

One sound that I thought should be mentioned is sway bar links clunking. It sounds very scary but it's actually inexpensive to replace and can't cause too much damage. If you drive 50 km/h around corners at intersections, it should be addressed immediately, but otherwise, you can actually put it off for a month or two if you don't have money to replace them.

Noise frequency can be a good indicator of noise location. ~16hz = crank, ~8hz = cam.

Oh wow - I'd heard all those sounds before except the last one of the engine self-destructing; what a noise! It always astounds me how many people just don't pay attention to (or don't care) about the noises coming from their vehicles. So many times now I've heard the same kind of response where you _try_ to be helpful and tell them what it is and to get it looked at and you get "Oh, it's fine - I just turn the stereo up louder. Doesn't really bother me." And of course the part eventually fails and while a few admit they should have listened, I find the majority of them have a response like "UGH... Stupid car! I had to get it towed to the shop because it died!" .... yeeaaaah, it's not the car that's stupid.

whooo.. heard a few of those noises over the years! Lost a Citroen Xantia (XD turbo diesel) to a broken cam belt. died on the spot. The upside was I got a great Citroen C5 2.ol HDI (DW10 based engine) lasted 10yrs til the catalyser went, uneconomical repair on 15yr old car... Now got 2013 Citroen C5 2.0 HDI 163 bhp with all the toys. like a french rolls royce.

i recently bought an old '01 F250 and while i was waiting to get it legal it sat in my driveway, i would start it once a week to keep the battery charged..one day i started it and i started hearing this high pitched noise that i could only describe as what it might sound like if 2 highly polished surfaces were rubbing...shut the truck off and popped the hood and started checking things....there wasnt a single drop of oil in it, bone dry

A brand new OEM power steering belt on the Toyota 1MZ V6 has to be adjusted super tight or it will squeak when cold. Has to be tighter than what I'm comfortable with for any belt.
