1980 never looked this good! This 1980 Volvo 262C Bertone is one cherry car. Bug Ninja, AKA: Volvo expert, makes a special guest appearance. CAR WIZARD 🧙‍♂️ is shocked how much this car shares parts and designs with other cars of that era, and a little talking about the Ferrari 348 engine too.

The 262C design was done in-house by Jan Wilsgard. Bertone only build the car, as Bertone was very happy to point out.,.. You could get the whole Volvo Range with the V6; a 262 (no "C" high top even rarer as the Bertone), a 264 Limo an a 265 Wagon.

@@volvo09 Would have been fun to own a nice 240 Turbo but they are old cars now and pretty expensive if they are in good shape. But i rarely even see any 940 or 740 on the road, to see a nice 240 is rare nowadays even here in Sweden there Volvo is common as hell. We can see them but they are often a 16-18 year old persons first car and often trashed examples. Not nice originals.

I worked in a Volvo dealership when that car was new. I remember the cams on the 6 cylinder engines being a big warranty problem. To get the cam out of the left bank you had to remove it from the block, until one mechanic had the bright idea to punch a big hole in the firewall and remove it into the interior. Saved a lot of time. Had a bunch of big rubber plugs in stock.
@GrayRaceCat
@GrayRaceCat Жыл бұрын
I started at the local independent Volvo shop in Aug 1982 and I remember that. Volvo North America approved using a hole saw to cut a hole behind the cylinder heads to pass the camshafts through, and sealing it with a rubber plug when done. It was much less costly to Volvo than pulling the heads. I wound up doing several camshaft/rocker sets that were out of warranty during my first few years there.

...you're supposed to take the INTAKE OFF to change the distributor on a PRV! That's why they keep breaking the caps. You DON'T change these caps with the intake on... As well, these engines have a high failure rate in the radiator hoses that run INSIDE the valley along the distributor. When you take the intake off to do the cap it gives you the opportunity to catch these leaking hoses.

Bug Ninja is the best car story teller in all of KZbin. Could listen for weeks to him. Actually here in Germany it is total common to speak about the 'Lamda Sonde' in the car mechanic world. Never heard anything else like 'Sauerstoff Sensor' which means 'oxygene sensor'. You mentioned the De Lorean with the same 2.7 V6 'europe engine'. The De Lorean was desinged by Giorgio Giugiaro, who was in the 60's chef designer at Bertone.

I've owned my '81 DeLorean with the 2.8L PRV V6 and the K-Jetronic Fuel Injection for 27 years. I've put nearly 100,000 miles on it and I have NEVER once had a single issue with either the engine or the fuel injection system. The only "engine" issue, if you want to call it that, I ever had was replacing the bearing in the AC belt idler pulley which I did myself for $12. My PRV has enough power to move the car sufficiently and has been ROCK SOLID reliable! EDIT: I have had to replace the clutch once at 19,000 miles, but that's not really an engine issue.

I owned a '77 Volvo 264 GL with the 2.7 litre V6 for 13 years and l found it to be a good engine. The rest of the car was a little troublsome but the engine and Bosch fuel injection system were fine. This engine tends to get a bet of a bad rap but at least you don't have to pull it out to replace a timing chain!

The Eagle Premier was another car you'd see in America with this PRV engine -- it was the optional V6 available instead of the standard AMC 2.5L 4 cylinder. It was the 3.0L variant, not the 2.7, but still -- same engine. It was a leftover from when AMC and Renault partnered up in the '80s, and the car remained in production for a few years after Chrysler bought AMC. Until 1992, I believe.

And the Peugeot 505, which we did get here in the U.S., had the PRV V6, even in the U.S.! So yes, the American-model 505 had this V6 too. And, the Renault Alpine had the PRV V6 as well, and also had a turbo. Those turbo'd PRV V6s were also used in what was the French answer to the Lotus Esprit, the MVS Venturi

Oh, this brings back memories. I, sucker for punishment that I was, bought a 265 from a friend. The engine has a very complex wiring loom that goes under the intake manifold, which, after enough time, starts to have the insulation on the wires deteriorate to the point that you get shorts. Then you get fun events like the engine not being able to be switched off, or starting by itself. An owner of a manual version had left it in a multi-storey car park when it started itself and shot out the side! I had to start mine by poking a long screw driver down under the block to short some or other wire. Eventually it died while I was driving, and between spending a few thousand on a complete re-wire and getting another car, the latter was more appealing. One of the Australian Volvo experts owned the Bertone though. He dropped the engine and put in a V8!

Bring a 94 mazda B3000 to a Mazda dealer (it's a Ford ranger) and see how much specialized service you can get... no one is used to it at the dealer, and it's old, so that adds another layer. I don't blame the dealer for not wanting to touch it, that engine was very rare and if someone is proficient in it they won't be working at a dealer where 1 car may show up in 5 years, they'll be at a specialist shop, or own their own shop.

Ultima Mk1/2/3 The PRV was also the basis for the 90° V6 engine used by Alfa Romeo in the 155 V6 Ti in the 1996 DTM/ITC season from Silverstone onwards. The engines in that series required the use of bank separation angle and cylinder bore spacing from a production based engine, and as a 90° V6 has greater room between banks than a 60° V6 for a more optimal induction system, Alfa Romeo used the PRV as a basis as it had been used in the Lancia Thema, a car which shared its platform with the Alfa Romeo 164, as well as the Fiat Croma and Saab 9000. Other sources declare that the 90° V6 engine in 1996 Alfa Romeo 155 V6 Ti is based on a 2.6 L V8 from 1970 Alfa Romeo Montreal with 2 cylinders removed, as allowed by the rules, however the FIA homologation documentation shows the homologated production engine was a "2850cm³" capacity "V6" engine. The bore spacing of the Montreal engine was too close to be suitable for the 155 V6 Ti in any case. Limone invented the "Montreal V8" story to throw the press off the scent and to satisfy FIAT management who were unhappy that a non-FIAT group developed engine was being used.

Not a big Volvo fan but have to say, the 240GL was one of the most reliable engines. Inline four banger with mechanical fuel injection.

Every time you both said 240, my brain keeps correcting 260, hahah. As volvo sold a 4 door version of the 264 that looked normal unlike the 262c. That dash pod is aftermarket, not by bertone. I had a 242 with 262c interior years ago. Except mine had a b234f 2.3 16v from a later 740 and dogleg box from bmw 535i in it. The b27f in that is an odd fire disaster. But volvo improved it over time to the even fire b280e with nearly 180hp. Until the modular inline 6 took over around 1990. Renault developed it further in the early 90s peaking at 3.0 bi-turbo with 254hp in there French Market safrane hatchback with 4wd Venturi pushed that version even more to about 400hp before people stopped using it around 1998.

I remember being told by my Volvo technician in the late '70's that the Renault F1 racing team used that same engine in their cars at the time and got 600hp out of it. Impressive - if true.

Take a good look at the engine block for coolant corrosion from the inside out. We replaced two garage queen engines for this problem. The block walls around the coolant passage areas are very thin.

Volvo even recommended added an anti-corrosive to the coolant to help avoid that corrosion. It was right in my owner's manual.

Thank you for this... I remember seeing this car as a kid. I believe some had a vinyl roof if I recall correctly. My father had an '82 Volvo DL, the base 2-series with the four cylinder engine. The car was bullet proof, and he finally let it go in the mid-90's with nearly 300K miles. It still ran well, but the interior was crumbling and falling apart. As a kid, my dad told me that the "DL" was and abbreviation for "Disguised Lamborghini". I thought it was the coolest car ever. I wish we still had it today.

Actually the PRV was in use right up to 1997, with the final 3.0 24v version being used in the Peugeot 605 car. In that form it made just over 200bhp and is a common swap for Delorean's.

Oh, I love the looks of this car. Our neighbor has one and it is all heck to find someone to work on it. We have a VERY specialty shop about 150 miles from my place that he takes it to, and I have helped him move the car there. When you find a good shop, you drive a long way to get things done right. But I just wanted to pass along one of those "Geez, what interesting timing for something to happen" stories. I was driving my 1985 Toyota pickup and was (literally) driving past my regular shop when the master cylinder gave out. OK, I can do that but, hey, I am at the shop, hand it over to them. I had just seen that one of the rear wheel cylinders had started to leak, so it was going to be fixed the next weekend. So, told them to replace the MC and overhaul the rear brakes {new hardware, new cylinders, OEM shoes, and check drum thickness (which turned out needing replacement)}. They quoted me a price and I was reminded why I do this kind of work myself. Gave them the go ahead and told them I did not need the truck for a while, so no hurry. Done in a couple of days, paid for it, and would have my wife drive me down to pick it up late at night when she got off work. Got most of the way home when the brake pedal suddenly felt a little soft. I thought that was odd, but figured I had got a bad wheel cylinder and would check it when I got home (less than 1/2 mile). So I just drove 25 instead of the 35 mph limit. Was going down a hill into the stoplight next to my house when the brake pedal just flopped to the deck. That can nearly cause a coronary. Downshifted through 2nd to 1st and pulled the e-brake and everything stopped straight and in time not to run the red. Eased it around the corner and stopped behind the neighbors tow truck. Left the keys under his door mat and a note saying what was wrong and where to take it. There was ONE single place on that truck that the shop could not see when they did their examination before starting work. And that was where the brake line went over the fuel tank. And, now, there was brake fluid spilling out from over the top of the tank. Absolutely no rust on any of those lines that could be seen. But a clip had broken and the line was vibrating against something and developed some corrosion... and the timing was just weird that it decided to break after a system overhaul. Finding that brake line was a bit of a chore so they ended up just making one. Glad they do good work as the e-brake did it's job. But more bad timing.... I had filled the gas tank on my way home...... Why does it always happen like that? Had them clean out the gas tank while it was down (with apologies for the bad timing). Just thought Car Wizard and everyone else could get a smile from this story. Everyone seems to have these 'bad timing' stories where the shop did everything right..... And then, out of the blue...... The really good thing is that they had fixed everything right and the e-brake was properly adjusted and working to exact standards. And then the good timing that it broke (basically) right in front of a tow truck. Blessings, everyone.....

Loved these. We were a Volvo family in the 70's and 80's when these came out, but they were so expensive in Aust at the time. If I remember correctly, only 100 were imported (during 1980 and 1981), 85 in the gold colour and 15 in the silver / black vinyl roof. The interior of this car is in great condition, as the few that I have seen, the interior is shot to pieces. From memory in 1980 a new 264GLE was AUD 20,000, whereas the 262C was AUD33,000, quite a premium.

In 87 when the 780 came out they had switched to an efi 2.8l prv. It was a good engine but low up by today's standards, about 165hp. The 87 780 still had the live axel. Only about 500 were imported to the us that year and the prv was the only engine option. The 2.7 was used in the 70s 260 models and the 760 starting in 84. The IRS was introduced on the 780 in 88 along with the turbo 4 as an option. I think 91 was the last year for the 780. The bertone models were very cool

The engine is the engine that was used in the DeLoreon BTTF car. Yes the PRV, Peugeot, Renault, Volvo....... The cloth interior slur on European cars, is bs. If you wanted cloth interiors on UK & European cars, you had to request it, all cars were vinyl\pleather for the basic cars, but mid level in top level had leather. Cloth was usually cloth or vinyl or pleather, and the second seat in a van was an option upto the early 70's. So your transit came with 1 seat only no shotgun person. The turbo 4 cyl actually won the BTCC in the 80's built by Andy Rouse.

At 16:25 the B27 was in use from 1975-80, then then made some minor changes to it and called it B28 because it had bigger bore and was in use in the 240/260 1980-81 and Volvo 760 1982-86, then they rebuilt the concept with several big changes for the better and called it B280 and it was in Volvo 780 and Volvo 760 from 1987 to the end of the era in 1991. Alsoyou could get the B27 in the Volvo 240 GLT6 1980-81 and the 760 with both six cylinder VW 2,4 liter diesel D24T engine and B23 Turbo. The Volvo 780 was also available with the four cylinder Volvo red block turbo engine and the VW 2,4 liter diesel D24T engine. Also the B280 is a very much better engine compared to the B27 and B28. Thanks...
