It's time for a FWD hot hatch drag race!
Mat's lining up in the classic Honda Civic Type R, alongside the new MINI GP, the Hyundai i30 N, and a Mountune-tuned Ford Focus ST!
So how about the specs? Well, all four cars are packing a 2-litre turbocharged petrol under their bonnets, and while the Focus ST can produce the most power at 330hp, it's the i30 N that can produce the most torque with a total of 550Nm! As for the MINI, well it'll only produce 306hp - the lowest of any competitor here today. But it does have one advantage... it's the only automatic!

I’ve got a Mini GP and the thing is hilarious. I’m sure the torque is restricted until 3rd gear because it suddenly takes off like a scalded cat. Fast like no mini ever before and goes round corners like a go kart. Bit bumpy but that’s the price you pay for such astonishing grip. Great way to put a smile on your face.

That Mini took me by surprise. I knew my favourite(i30N) was not going to win, but I certainly did not expect it to be last. I am gutted. Bearing in mind I raced a motorbike up the motorway and I kept up with it(was a 650).

Yeah the GP is absolute savagery, I usually beat Scat Packs and Mustang GTs... definitely have reeled in and passed a couple 600cc bikes on highway... even was hanging with an Audi R8 one time. The only cars that destroy me are cars like BMW M5s and Corvette C8 Z06s... It's strange because the 301hp/332tq feels like much more, I think the 8speed transmission is doing magic and from 3rd gear onwards the car is a rocket ship.

I've driven the GP3 as I work for a MINI dealer and it is rapid. The Clubman JCW also has 306hp but doesn't feel nearly as fast despite having a faster 0-60 time on paper but the Clubman is 4wd so maybe off the line it is, when you are up to speed the GP3 feels like a little rocket ship!

Loved my old Focus ST-3 back in 2007 with the few engine mods to it's 2.5L power plant. It was a heavy beast of a car. Still prefer the old shape and split exhaust than the ST today. Glad Ford is still running with it alongside the RS version.

Sub Zero race chip claims to give you maybe 40-50hp but it is overrated. If you dyno it, you’ll be closer to 20-25hp ish....Racechip Uk website states +38hp for GTS version, not sure where your +48hp figure is coming from mate?

Mini has a classical automatic gearbox with convertissor , not double clutch, and many say its very SLOW and give chance for manual gearbox, but its a 8 and not 6, so it make already a difference; and the real power mesured is 330hp and 510Nm (french " Sport auto"), for me, I am not surprised.

GP3 is mental. At just short of 250bhp/tonne it's power to weight ratio is more than an A45s and matches that of an RS3! Would get annihilated from a standing start by those two (as FWD) but with no power loss through an AWD train I'd love to see a real world rolling start of them three from say 30mph+...

It takes too much time for you! I'm 63 and certain I can power shift multiples quicker than you can. With few above average priced exceptions I've never found an automatic that can shift faster than me. It's absolutely one of my strong points in racing, smooth almost seamless shifts that sound like an automatic..BTW it's not just shifting but leaving off the line reaction too.

FYI the B48 bmw engine in the Mini claims 301 hp but it dynos 285-290 whp and actually makes closer to 330 bhp and it only weighs 2700 lbs. BMW performance engines actually are very underrated. That B48 also has the forged internals from the B58 M240 and Supra 3.0, minus 2 cylinders, plus a bigger turbo than the lower trim B48s. Research goes a long way! B48s are starting to get mods and they're making 350+ whp from a downpipe and tune only. I know because my B48 is a development car going through custom tunes with Bm3 before the OTS maps are released.

I have had one of the early Cooper-S arriving in the US and later a pre-series Clubman-S from BMW headquarter in Munich. Both I fine tuned their engines and got quite some power out of them. Having owned a Type R I can say it is a hard car to launch well and can be somewhat tricky to change gears from 1st to 2nd and even 2nd to 3rd. With that being said it should have been closer to the mini when driven to it's potential. Hard to get accurate results when you have drivers unfamiliar with a specific car's manual versus a Dual Clutch where all you have to do is apply gas.
