I think her drunken, incoherent ranting was the most accurate description of what actually happened. It wasn’t murder, it wasn’t suicide. It was two very drunk people fighting over a loaded gun and she MAY HAVE pulled the trigger - but it is VERY likely that his hand was over hers basically saying I DARE YOU! HERE - let me help you! Neither had intentions of shooting. This is the NUMBER ONE reason not to have a loaded gun ANYWHERE near you!!

I've had to tell people before that if they showed up to my house unannounced before that we had loaded weapons, and they politely backed off. It's a way of saying "I am able to protect myself from intruders, especially when I don't know who is on the house."

Most trauma victims don't have the best recollection of what has happened in that moment, so her story being inconsistent in the beginning isn't that strange to me. I witnessed my ex being shot (not by me) and I could hardly tell the officers what happened when they interviewed me 20-30 minutes later because you have so much adrenaline and shock running through you and your brain wants to block that horrific memory out. It took me about 2 weeks to get the storyline straight of what actually happened that night and trying to remember what the suspect looked like. But on top of it she was extremely intoxicated, which just makes it even harder to remember you can hear how intoxicated she is in the body cam footage. I genuinely believe this was a horrible drunk accident on both parts, it's truly a sad case.

I think it’s so weird when people judge 911 calls. My husband passed out once. He hit his face on the floor. Blood was everywhere. He stopped breathing and then had a seizure. I called 911. I was screaming. I have no idea what I even said. I was just screaming to get the paramedics there. I remember she asked what happened and I literally just rambled. I don’t even know what was said specifically. I was just screaming for them to get there and screaming at him to please wake up. Like everyone is upset when people are calm and collected on the 911 recordings. But they’re also upset if they’re frantic. This 911 call is exactly what I would expect from someone that was shook at what had just happened. But it’s not accurate to decide if someone is guilty or not. And I am not defending her. I’m just saying 911 calls are too chaotic to be able to judge.

I completely agree. I work in the medical field, visiting people at their homes. I’ve had to call 911 many times before. Sometimes when I watch these videos I wonder if I ever had to be in that situation, would I be calm like I usually am or would I be hysterical? And if I weren’t hysterical would I be criticized for that? Ultimately I don’t really think you can judge someone on how they’re acting on a 911 call all the time.

I used to work 999calls (British 911) and honestly people can range from sounding abnormally cold to extremely hysterical. There are red flags in listening to these calls but lack or extreme emotion can just be how people handle emotional distress

I completely agree with you. I had to call the ambulance for my daughter when she was 3 months old because she couldn't breathe. I was hysterical. I was screaming, crying. The only thing I know for certain was that I kept screaming, "My baby can't breathe, my baby can't breathe, my baby can't breathe!"

I don’t like the fact the cops were listening to her and openly stating that she was already working on her defence. The police need to learn to put aside their own bias when speaking with people who have just witnessed or committed a crime or incident. Having dated someone similar to the way he was described with the other encounter with the ex, I believe her. I’ve had to wrestle my ex with a knife as he threatened to hurt himself after I had picked up my phone to call someone to pick me up to get away from him. Worst part was a neighbor called the cops, and the cops saw a scratch on his arm that I had did when I disarmed him and automatically painted him as the victim. I eventually escaped the abusive relationship, but I learned to never rely on the cops because all it takes is one charismatic guy to discredit your trauma.

Om my gosh something incredibly similar happened to me with my ex but he was holding a box cutter to his throat and I was trying to take it away from him and it cut my hand this was in the middle of the street in broad daylight he also poured lemonade on me and the neighbors saw and called the cops I didn’t even realize my hand had been cut till I started walking back to my house which was about 10 minutes away so I completely understand being in a struggle and not really sure of who did what that was when I was maybe 16-17 and im almost 27 now and I still don’t know if he had meant to do it or if I did it to myself in the motion of trying to take the box cutter away from him. He did some other really crazy shit like pushing me out of a car and trying to run me over and stalking me after the break up so it’s safe to assume he probably did do it on purpose but I really don’t know.

The lady doing the autopsy and everything she was trying to prove was based on him trying to shoot himself, which Caryn never said it was intentional. agreed. i really think it was a fucked up, confusing accident. sometimes people downplay how much being very drunk affects what a person does, how they react to things, etc. she was not lucid, it isn't an excuse but it is an explanation. imagine being completely loaded and ending up in a situation anywhere near that. having been pretty damn drunk several times in my life, not only is it hard to remember shit, it's hard to think straight or do anything really. i invite those who think she was calculated and decisive to get wasted and put themselves in a high stress situation. to me that sounds like a literal nightmare.

Why do police interview ppl who are wasted and then say “they’re obviously lying because their story changed/didn’t make sense.” Like yeah no shit, they were drunk smh. And even when she sobered up a bit, she only had a few hours of sleep at best, she probably didn’t even know wtf was going on. It sounds just like you first said, that she had the gun pointer at whomever came in, then held it up and he saw it and was sort of belligerent like “oh what, ur gunna shoot me?” And then messed around, struggled, and it went off. Hence the distance from his cheek, they were both pulling on it. Also sounds like he didn’t get divorced because he was still holding on to his marriage at least in his heart. Dating another girl for 4 years before this relationship shows that he wasnt in a hurry to change his marital status, but it didn’t hold him back from moving on either for some reason. Sad all the way around, they sound like they were terrible for each other and drinking way too much 😕 his poor kids man.

the way this case was handled in such a black and white way is honestly infuriating to listen to. it being disproven that it was an intentional suicide doesn't suddenly prove that it was an intentional homicide. personally all the evidence sounds to me like it was a genuine accident - and sadly it isn't surprising that two very drunk people handling a gun ended this way.

Threatening suicide is not only a trait of someone who is depressed, it is also a common abuse tactic. He sounds toxic and abusive using “I’ll kill myself if you don’t do what I want”. He did it before to his ex wife, he was likely doing it to her too. It’s a common manipulation tactic done by abusive partners.

She should've put the gun down when she realized he was not a strange intruder, and he should've taken her deadly threat seriously and gotten the heck outa there instead of taunting her. Yesyesyes I’m so glad someone said this. I’ve been in a similar situation with my ex-abuser before where he would threaten suicide if I didn’t comply, or if I tried to defend myself. I could totally see her trying to defend herself and him saying “oh you want to hurt me? Here let me do it for you.” I strongly feel she had a gun because she was afraid of him and he took it away and pretended to use it on himself to make her feel guilty for defending herself, but then in a struggle it went off accidentally. I don’t believe she is at fault.

I thought the same. Yes, there was circumstancial evidence that she may have had a motive to kill him (purposefully) but the evidence of the situation itself was not consistent with that being the case. I actually had to look up Florida law for manslaughter and manslaughter defences because I felt slightly conflicted as to if I thought there was enough to say that she was legally responsible and concluded that at least under Florida law she truly couldn't have been found legally responsible for manslaughter with the evidence being what it was.

I think the same. Even if she shot him in anger, she was absolutely drunk and so was he. People make split second decisions when they’re completely drunk and terrible things can happen. Her 911 call is shock to me. She’s not in her right mind and she’s dissociating from what she did. It’s really common when something traumatic happens to dissociate and subconsciously deny what happened 😔 Your brain unconsciously creates an alternative sequence of events to protect itself. She clearly immediately regretted what happened. This is what happens when there is a lethal combination of: loaded guns are in peoples’ houses, people who get angry drunk and they make split second decisions 😔

I'm at a loss as to why her blood alcohol wasn't taken at the time.I think it could have shed a lot of light on the entirety of the situation. She's clearly inebriated on the 9-1-1 call and so she comes off questionably. He was also very drunk so he may also have been acting erratically. I don't think she could have had intent being as drunk as she was at the time, and I think her changing story is more likely due to being drunk than trying to change a narrative to fit emerging evidence.

This seems like a complete freak accident. I don't think she shot him and I don't think he committed suicide, it looks like a drunken accident brought on by the passion of the argument. The gun went off in the struggle, and here we are. I feel genuinely bad for her... she realized the consequences of getting that gun out as soon as the shot fired.

I've been in a relationship with an alcoholic. I've wrestled over weapons before. The suicide thing is also something abusive people like to use to scare others into doing things they want, which has also happened to me. In this case I believe her. I think it was an accident. She had the gun for a reason even after knowing it was him. Everyone describes my ex as an amazing guy who's not aggressive. Behind closed doors he's abused 3 women and has charges against him from two of us. Some may disagree, but no one knows you like your significant other. That's when the true evil comes out. Not guilty.

Even as I was watching this, I commented to a friend that I'd get an attorney, guilty or not. I hear so many tactics used about interrogation to get a false confession and tricking people into saying stuff either in a way they can twist, or making them believe themselves they're guiltier than they are (ex: a detective *could* talk with Caryn and put the idea in her head that she shot him in the heat of the moment due to anger, even if that's not the case. And with the stress and exhaustion, her brain could take that and run with it.)

The “going to Disney world”thing was bc back in the late 80’s and 90’s super bowl winners used to say, when asked by reporters what are they doing next the response was “I’m going to Disney world!” It then become pretty much a meme before there were memes. It was used in commercials and in tv shows as punch lines. Was it tone deaf? Yes. But it wasn’t all that strange considering her age it would’ve been something she heard hundreds of times as a response to that question and it was just the first thing that popped into her mind and as her brain is probably going a mile a minute with relief and nerves and she didn’t think much before she spoke. I think it was incredibly insensitive but not intended to be.

Two alcoholics in a toxic relationship fighting after a night of drinking, and high emotions. Honestly, she probably knew it was him, and wanted to act tough with the gun. He acted angry, and emotional, and wanted power over the situation, and grabbed the gun, and a drunken toxic fight ensued. At some point the gun was fired. I totally believe this was accidental for both of them. It's an unfortunate accident in a drunk and toxic relationship that probably had past fights of varying elevating levels. Not hard to believe honestly.

You can’t question any inebriated person and expect a straightforward true consistent story. The gabble petito case is a perfect example of why I do not trust police to correctly identify a domestic violence situation. The fact that they brought her in drunk should be raising a million red flags. She is not in a frame of mind where she can even consent to questioning. The detectives need to be charged for doing that, that’s despicable. Not only all of that, which could easily explain her changing testimony and possibly make her not even remember clearly what happened, he has a history of threatening suicide to his significant other. And he kept secret the fact that he was married the whole time, but doesn’t that reflect poorly on HIM? It seems like that fact was only used against HER. I think the jury was right to vote not guilty. Even if you think she is guilty, the case was handled disastrously and maliciously and there isn’t compelling evidence of her guilt.

I took the, "go to Disney" comment as a sort of tired, sarcastic, "just stop talking to me" response. "What are you going to do next" is a rather stupid question to ask. How would she know for sure after everything that had happened. Honestly, if I'd lost the love of my life, been accused of being the killer, had the prosecution parade a bunch of people who disliked me to bad mouth me to the jury, had a doctor with a bias try to condemn me with invalid testimony, and then get asked THAT when it was finally over........I can't say how I'd react. Her demeanor more reminds me of how I am when it's all too much and I just shut down. Maybe I see that because I have depression myself, but that ordeal can emotionally exhaust anyone.

In the 90s/early 00s, it was a popular thing for sports reporters to ask winners of big games "what are you going to do next" and they'd always say "I'm going to disneyland!", it ended up in some disney commercials and promos, etc. When this case took place, if you asked almost anyone "what are you going to do next", they'd respond that way. Gut feeling: her character - based on witnesses - tells me that it's entirely possible she had a "heat of the moment" type situation. As far as actually proving it...i think the jury ruled the correct way based on the charges karen had and the evidence they were presented with. I agree with the jury's verdict. Her 911 call and actions afterward, including the odd behavior, sounds like she had snapped due to shock. When your brain experiences trauma, as others have mentioned, it does not always process in chronological order or in coherent detail. The Disney World comment, being that she is in Orlando, seemed like a snarky annoyed response to the constant questions. She probably hadn't had a chance to process her freedom completely and was hit with interview questions. In the 80's and 90's after the the super bowl the athletes were asked what they were going to next. They always responded, "I'm going to Disney World!" It became a tongue and cheek response to something good happening. Her tone of voice sounded tired and unattached as she responded. That wasn't a real response...just a sarcastic response to an annoying question. I actually believe this woman this time. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I wanna know more about her habits and routine. Did she normally have the gun locked and loaded at her bedside? Why did she “warn” Phillip that if he came home unannounced she might shoot? Did he usually text or call when he came home late at night? Did she use their drunken night as an opportunity? When she recognized him did she question herself and that’s why she didn’t put it down? I believe she saw him, hesitated, seriously thought for a second about doing it, then they fought for it and he got shot. Then she freaked out and realized she never truly wanted him dead, she was just irritated as hell with him and boom. There you have it.

I think cases like this where drugs, alcohol, toxic relationships, and seeming mental instabilities are existing all together… are just tough. She is clearly drunk in the body cam footage and I think she was truly scared of an intruder and of him in his drunk state of mind, because it sounds like he was talking crazy. As a domestic violence survivor I could see all the red flags in Philip. If I hadn’t gotten out of it as soon as I did I probably could had snapped. I don't remember if Karen's alcohol content was said, but as a child of an alcoholic and from a family of alcoholism, her police cam footage screams "not at all there". Her recollection is shot. She can remember flashes or even think something happened. It all goes out the door there. Yeah, its likely your story would change a lot. I even have vivid dreams when I am under the influence of alcohol that I can't tell reality from dream for a few minutes trying to piece together the night before. We've all said and done some weird or dumb stuff that is out of character. A struggle when a gun is in play is another thing, especially when both parties are heavily intoxicated. I don't buy the suicide bit. I do believe there was a struggle between two individuals that were very intoxicated and that it ended very badly.

I don't know why people thought it was suicide when it just sounded like an accident. Like suicide to me seems like an intention to kill oneself not accidentally kill themselves. Saying it was suicide because of depression even makes less sense because he was literally drunk no one thinks straight when they are drunk. I also understand the not putting the gun away because she had it up in the air to not point it anywhere. She could have been going to put it back but they fought over it. I def noticed the difference in her coherency from the police-car/on-the-scene video to her interrogation - yet clearly still altered - footage. She was hard-out slurring & having had a flatmate who regularly got blackout drunk, I'd say that it made COMPLETE sense that her story kept changing cuz she DIDN'T fully remember what happened...and that she might LEGIT remember more clearly what actually went down 24 (or so) hrs later...or maybe not at all & she's just piecing together what she WANTS to remember. Cuz I've seen variations on both before...same flatmate...posted photos of her severely bruised knee saying what happened -she was at a party 3 houses down, plus HEAPS of way more private things I won't say. But basically just yeah, this shit can happen....N clearly she (Caryn) pissed (drunk/wasted), n he was at min over driving limit as well...all around not good...N I can totally believe that she wasn't sure what exactly happened & that her story changed cuz she didn't remember & didn't want to fully admit that she was blackout drunk...doesn't make it OK, just saying it could happen....N @Natlia stay strong n I hope you don't have the stories I saved my flatmate from....or those I'm sure I wasn't there for...n don't want to think about.

So I’m from Florida and the “I’m going to Disney World” is an ongoing joke we always answer when asked what we are doing next. While I find her really suspicious I could totally see myself doing that out of habit to that question….

ThIs is the first comment I seen that addressed this. I commented it further up explaining that it was something that started in the late 80’s when Super Bowl winners gave it as an answer to the same question and it became basically a meme before there was memes. As a kid growing up in the 80’s and 90’s I heard that response thousands of times and am surprised so many people didn’t know where it came from or how easily someone who had heard it so much could give that response without thinking. Just off the cuff like you said. I would probably almost definitely say the same thing automatically if I wasn’t thinking “watch what you say” even then it’s my first thought to that question regardless of whether I say it aloud or not lol. And I live in Mississippi so while it’s probably more prominent in Florida it happens everywhere it’s an age thing for most places maybe a proximity thing for Florida 😂

Honestly, her 911 call feels pretty real to me. I can definitely see someone who has never shot someone to panic and react like this. Your emotions are all over the place you know. Seems like she was afraid he would do something, but at the same time never intended to really hurt him. I do kind of believe her. I don't know if I believe the whole story, but I do believe an on edge fight could lead to a wrestle for a gun. As a woman we do expect violence from men even men we know who have never harmed us can trigger these feelings. When I was young and freshly married I once thought my husband was actually trying to hurt me and I pulled a knife on him. He was just messing with me, but I had NO IDEA. I have PTSD so he realized that it was just a bad way to mess with me because I will take them seriously as my experience has taught me I will be harmed if I don't. But it was a very learnable moment for both of us.

This sounds like one of those relationships where when it was good, it was great and when it was bad, it was horrible. Like they could be extremely volatile and the alcohol escalated the situation. He did say, "You want me to do it for you?" When you are fighting and struggle for a gun, accidents can happen. The gun accidentally fired and 3 to 6 inches seems about right when you are fighting arm to arm for a gun. I think the jury was correct on their decision for Caryn.

From the story (sorry if I’ve missed or misheard anything) it sounds like when she saw it was Phillip she lifted her gun to the ceiling/pointed it away (possibly taking her finger off the trigger?), and then within moments he escalated the situation and the struggle took place (finger possibly back on the trigger). Not sure she’d have time to even place the gun down, and it doesn’t seem like she would even be inclined to if he was clearly drunk and volatile. She described an abusive situation, but that doesn’t mean she would necessarily identify him as an abuser to police if that was just what she perceived to be a normal relationship dynamic

I think it was two people who were drunk fighting. She told him not to come back she had a gun. He came back and I think she grabbed the gun to prove a point to him he egged her on and they just kept arguing and then things got out of control. They probably did struggle with the gun and it went off. I really think they were both at fault and it could have been either one who got shot. I think it was not intentional

First of all, never pull out a gun in self defense unless you are prepared to use it (if needed). Secondly, it's not wise to grab arms, wrists, etc. when a gun is involved.

Most of us want to believe that our loved ones wouldn't commit suicide. That leaves too much room to feel like we failed them. I know this from experience. I also know from experience that you can love your children as much as anyone ever loved anyone and you can still want to die. Both of this things can be true at the same time. I also know that when you're drunk, you're different. You're altered. You're not in your right frame of mind. I know that things happen in the heat of the moment. I also know that those things that happen in the heat of the moment can be intensified immensely when any party is under the influence.

Can I just say I think it’s very weird to assume a stranger is “fake crying” when you don’t even know them. None of us know how Caryn cries or reacts to traumatic situations, so people saying “oh seems fake” is just WEIRD! You know NOTHING about this person, but you, a random person, is able to spot out that this stranger is fake crying? This isn’t even just pertaining to this case though, I’m just talking in general. My mom is an alcoholic and her behavior when she’s intoxicated is very similar to the body cam footage you can see her swaying a bit and slurring her words. Not to mention she thought it was an intruder and was intoxicated so things could’ve easily gone south very quickly. When two people are drunk and fighting and there’s a loaded gun involved this is a likely outcome.

I've heard of these kind of cases before and it's always said that guns cannot accidentally go off, because it takes some pressure to pull the trigger. Is this not always true of certain guns.? I can't imagine that someone "drunk" could keep the pressure on the trigger, especially if they were "fighting". I think she had found out he was going to finish with her (probably still in love and possibly seeing his ex) and wanted to hurt him, but probably didn't intend to kill him.

Guns actually don’t need that much pressure, all you need to do is squeeze the trigger once (not keeping pressure on it) and it will fire, the problem they had was being drunk and fighting for control of the gun, impossible to know who pulled the trigger but with the awkward angle of the shot itself and the fact that they were both just grappling for any purchase they could find on the gun it makes total sense to me that it went off without either of them intending for it to.

To me this truly does seem like an accident. Alcohol, guns and and relationship drama never mix very well, especially late at night in the dark. Part of me actually believes her. As far as the disney world/land quote, I'm guessing she was either being sarcastic or she had been thinking about all the things she would never get to do if she went to prison and going there was one of them.
