His brother Homer brought water and sausage to feed him in so he didn't succumb to the elements but the amount of gravel that had caved in on top of him simply replenished itself during every attempt to remove rocks. Eventually some cave workers tried enlarging the hole to Floyd in order to reach him but it only caused the passage to cave in. The national guard was called and a hole was dug down to Floyd over a course of 12 days, but by the time they had reached Collins he had already died of starvation.
