CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) pulls a gun on Rick (Humphrey Bogart) in an effort to get the travel papers, but ends up confessing her love for him.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
One of the most beloved American films, this captivating wartime adventure of romance and intrigue from director Michael Curtiz defies standard categorization. Simply put, it is the story of Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart), a world-weary ex-freedom fighter who runs a nightclub in Casablanca during the early part of WWII. Despite pressure from the local authorities, notably the crafty Capt. Renault (Claude Rains), Rick's cafà (C) has become a haven for refugees looking to purchase illicit letters of transit which will allow them to escape to America. One day, to Rick's great surprise, he is approached by the famed rebel Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid) and his wife, Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), Rick's true love who deserted him when the Nazis invaded Paris. She still wants Victor to escape to America, but now that she's renewed her love for Rick, she wants to stay behind in Casablanca. "You must do the thinking for both of us," she says to Rick. He does, and his plan brings the story to its satisfyingly logical, if not entirely happy, conclusion.

When your heart is ripped out by the woman you love, You would prefer if she killed you right then and there then leave you feeling like a walking zombie. I felt like a dead man that just happened to be alive. As if I had been hit by a big rig and was laying in the gutter waiting to die, only to realize im alive somehow and wishing the woman I loved would come back to me or find me just to put me out of my misery. Its crazy how loosing your beloved can hurt more than any punch, any bullet, and any words from your greatest enemy. When he said this line it hit different and still does. Maybe my ex did kill me that day, she just didnt want to finish the job.

Imagine hearing your husband is dead, trying to move on with your life, finding a love that you never really felt for your husband, and then learning your husband is alive, there was nothing to move on from, and you can never be with your new love. A truly impossible situation, and Ingrid Bergman captures its raw pain and suffering splendidly. You believe every emotion she is expressing and trying to repress at the same time.

I dunno what is worse, heart break at a young age when your heart young and pure is broken into bits. But you're young and resilient. Or when you're middle aged and crusty, been through dark alleys and tough, impervious to any hurt, you thought. And you open yourself to what you thought as the one only to be shattered and left reeling.

Concerning Ingrid Bergman's accent: I don't know if it is common knowledge these days, but four years prior to this performance she did not speak any English at all. She started to learn English when she went to America in 1939. Before that she had made several films in Swedish (her native language) and one in German (her mother's native language). Later in her life, she learned and acted in Italian and French. She sure must have had a good ear for languages.

@@ClassyGyal Ingrid had an affair with an Italian director and his child. Very scandalous and cost her career in Hollywood at the time. Her daughter, Isabella Rosellini bears her mothers good looks and is a hottie in her own right. Ingrid had moved out of the US, but eventually her transgressions were overlooked by Hollywood (LOL, who are they to judge). Ingrid is my favorite actress of all time. Her performances in this movie and the Bells of St. Mary's are sterling. Compare her with any modern actress, and she leads the pack.

Casablanca was released in 1942 and the impact of the film at that time must've been tremendous. In this scene they're not talking about historical events but about contemporary events. Paris had fallen; indeed all of Europe had fallen; Singapore had fallen; the Philippines had fallen; the Germans had pushed within a few miles of Moscow; Rommel was gaining victories in North Africa. The character Victor Lazslo and his Resistance movement represented the last hope for so many. In short, when the film was originally released, the Allies were losing. Nobody knew when-- or even if-- the tide would turn. It really was --- as the line in the film says --- "a story without an ending." So, in addition to the timeless artistry of the film, when it first came out on its original release date it must have struck people to their very core. This was now! This was real. Nobody knew how this terrible war would end. The film must have had a tremendous impact on its initial release.

Even more powerful is the look on his face at 1:35. It’s the first time we see him genuinely softened and concerned since Paris. All this time, in his bitterness, he has probably imagined horrible and selfish motives for Ilsa’s abandonment of him. He was convinced she never really loved him. But here, suddenly he sees his own pain reflected in her eyes, with equal intensity, and it hits him that he was all wrong about her. That what they shared really was as real to her as it was to him. That she didn’t want to leave him. That something terrible happened. It changes everything. All captured in that one look from Bogart, a master actor.

I can understand where Richard is coming from. When I left my husband for a few months he went to pieces and when I came back to reconcile he was a mess. I promised I'd never put him through that again.

Amazing acting by Bergman. Although she slept with almost all her leading men (and many of her directors) she never got along with Bogart, and was not attracted to him at all. Love this film; it's the best one ever made.

I used to wonder that too. But upon my seventh viewing (lol) I spotted that brief look in Rick’s face. Remember, he’s been under the impression that Ilsa abandoned him because she grew tired of him, or was cheating on Viktor. He views everything she’s done so far (trying to meet him to explain what happened) as a cynical play on his emotions to get the letters of transit for herself and Viktor. But when she puts the gun down, tears in her eyes, she says, “I tried to stay away. I thought that I would never see you again-that you were out of my life.” Her brave face crumbles and she turns away in an expression of agony. I think he realizes she is genuinely broken-hearted, and begins to get the idea that she may have feelings for him after all. As immediately confirmed when he takes her in his arms and she explains. “The day you left Paris…if knew what I went through…” His entire narrative shifts. With mutual silent acknowledgement of their ongoing connection, they kiss.

Crazy how much thought was put into creating this scene. At 0:40 a small citation of "As Time Goes By" can be heard just as Ilsa points the gun at him. IMO this foreshadows the fact that she won't go through with shooting him, as she still loves him.

She had to go to her sick husband who needed her. She had made a promise in her marriage vows, and genuinely loved him and was prepared to always stand by him. When she heard he was dead, she believed that promise was behind her, then found out it wasn’t. And if she were to tell Rick about it, his life would be in even more danger because he would be aware of the whereabouts of a wanted man-Victor. So it was safer for him not to know. She gave up her chance at a future with her new true love to keep a promise to the other love of her life, who desperately needed her, and kept silent for everyone’s safety. Cowardice and weakness? I think not.

@12classics39 She didn't even give Rick a chance. Rick always fought for the Loyalists, and seeing how he was willing to sacrifice the chance he and Ilsa had again at the airport, why wouldn't he have been willing to take the risk the year prior? Even if he did know about Victor, Rick would've found ways to escape via connections, off-road routes, and exit strategies. Ilsa took the decision out of his hands by leaving without telling, just like Rick decides for the best near the end to take the decision of her not leaving with Victor out of her hands, 'cause by then he was able to see the bigger picture. But he could've seen it sooner had Ilsa been a little more trusting and honest.
