Greetings from England, excellent steam video Jerry, I note 493 is oil fired - perhaps a sign for the future. I have been fortunate to travel on this railway twice so far but not in the winter, it looks so magical at this time of year.

One of my earliest memories was of a steam locomotive in the early 50's. I was only about 2 years old. My mother had taken me to the N.Y Central train station in Auburn N.Y. to meet one of her relatives. I remember the big wheels, driving arms and steam of the engine. It scared the poop out of me, probably literally, and fascinated me at the same time.

Brings tears to my eyes...acknowledging that the early might of the Nation was so very much dependent on its ability to promote commerce by conveying everything vital to its growth, while imprinting forever in people's minds the sights, sounds, & thrills that railroads, specifically steam engines, were the workhorses that helped make Our Country grow & prosper. My grandmother's house was adjacent to the old Boston & Albany, New York Central yards in Boston. I can still remember the smell of the old coal-fired steam engines that were always in the air

That was at South Station. The B&A was the go around Boston for the freight going north. There was an old switch tower at the Woburn wye. Charlie Smith was the night shift operator there.

Robert, it was actually in Allston in the Beacon yards. Our house was on Pratt Street which was off of Linden Street. The yards have been moved out to Worcester and those yards are owned by Harvard and they are in the process of building a large development. It was part of the mainline that went out to Framingham, Worcester, and Western Mass. They used to "hump" those freight trains all night long and there was a loudspeaker on day and night. Somehow or other we were able to sleep through the noise and the banging.

Jerry, I don't know if you bother reading all of these but thanks for NOT using a big zoom lens during approach and departure shots. I got the real sense of what a viewer at that location would see and experience whereas with the zoom it is impossible.

Farley, I was a US Air Force photographer and photojournalist for 22 years and then a writer and training developer for HP for 18 years. I started shooting 16mm movies for the Air Force in 1960. I agree with your comment. I normally am shooting stills at the same time as the video, so I put my Nikon on quiet mode and let the Sony capture it without zoom. Sometimes I do pan to follow the train. When I was first shooting 16mm in the 60s, had a Bolex with three lenses, no zoom, so I never got zoom happy....SMILE

Nicely done, Jerry. Beautiful background as well and the sound of the whistle echoing off the surrounding mountains. Rocky Mountain high. You might have taken so close ups of the engine. It looks like a very well planned restoration. It would be nice to see as much of the running gear and cab as possible if you have not done this already.

Beautiful video. I have a question that perhaps someone here can address. What is the high pitched whirring sound that I hear from the steam locomotive? I'm not talking about the steam hiss, or the huff-huff. You can hear it in the first minute or so of the video. It sounds like a fan or a compressor. I've heard it on other steam locomotives, also. I'd really like to know what the source is. You can really hear it well at about 6:50.

That's the dynamo. It is a small steam turbine generator sitting just ahead of the cab that provides the electricity for the headlight and the instrument lights inside the cab. They run at a few thousand RPM and make that whistling-whining noise heard in almost every steam locomotive video. Some locomotives like the Big Boy actually carry 2 of them to get enough electrical power for all of the FRA-required equipment. Here's another video showing it in detail. Question. Bell. I see a bell rope, but at least from 11:00 onward, we hear the bell, and the bell isn't moving, nor is the rope. Has this got an air actuated clapper?

Yes the bell is operated by air, but can also be rung by the fireman

Likewise...I remember the steam engines of the Norfolk and Western in Cincinnati. The first thing we’d do when got to GrandMom’s on Clarion St was to go down to catch a glimpse up close as they came around the bend. Sixty yrs later the tracks are gone, and a scenic boulevard has taken their place. Xavier U owns most of the property around there now....That’s progress?

Last time I saw 493, it was on a siding in Silverton. What happened to the proposed trade with the Cumbres & Toltec in Chama? Didn’t they think 493 was too big for the tight turns on DS?

The D&S traded 497 to the C&TS years ago for 482. There was a specific problem with 497 that was fixed.

@@jbr496 Not true, do not know where these tall tales come from. The 493 has run over all the bridges now except the Elk Park bridge (built in 1964) with no problems. It has turned on the Durango Loop, the Event Park Wye and the Wye at Cascade.

@@stephensfarms7165 Only a bit more powerful, 37,000 pounds tractive effort vs 36,000 for the K-36s. A K-37 can pull one more car. The cylinders, frames, and running gear are the same.

That is the way the D&RGW did it. The crew uses the air when they are busy with other activities and the hand ringer is there in case the air fails.

Were the K-37s primarily freight engines? Seems to have fairly short drivers. Can't imagine this beast would be very fast,but could pull hard. Just curious,not very knowledgeable. Thanks

Yes the K-37s were freight engines, worked out of Salida from 1932 until 1950 over Marshall Pass and down the San Luis Valley to Alamosa. Narrow gauge is never fast, about 30 mph is max with K-28s on passenger runs. The max on the D&S is 25 mph.

Even when the warm weather comes, I don't think 493 will go all the way to Silverton, because I remember hearing when 497 was on this railroad, it was having trouble going through the sharp curves around the Silverton branch.

I personally believe that the change to oil on some of the locos is showing to the world that steam is a lot more flexible, and better for the environment, than a diesel loco.
