DESCRIPTION
On the 11th of January 1965, two fifteen-year-old schoolgirls Christine Sharrock and Marianne Schmidt were found murdered in the Wanda sand hills, just north of Cronulla Beach in Sydney's south.
The crime remains one of the most horrific Australia has ever seen. Despite an exhaustive police investigation, the killer remains unknown…

Im English but my father who was a marine engineer, was contracted to Australia to oversee a new operation for 5 yrs so me & my mum went with him. Based in Sydney we lived in a place called Dolls Point near the beach overlooking Botany Bay This was in 1964 & as a 13 yr old schoolgirl, me & my friends regularly went to Cronulla Beach as it wasnt far from us & the best beach by far for socialising & surfing I remember in 1965 going almost every weekend & vertually daily during school holidays Then suddenly my parents forbade me going to Cronulla Beach anymore. In fact most of my close friends were forbidden to go there unless supervised by a few parents & ordered to stay within speaking distance I was vaguely aware something bad had happened at the beach but in those days our parents wouldnt expand on exactly what. Fearing we were too young to be told details & it would upset us & cause nightmares It wasnt until very recently, 2 yrs ago ( & thats 50 yrs ago since the Cronulla/Wanda Beach murders occurred) that i heard the full events of what took place when i was just 14. I was horrified! Im pleased my parents didnt tell me & supervised all our beach trips thereafter. It could so easily been one of us As we often walked from Cronulla to Wanda. It was a very lonely place too, it scared me & i never liked walking there. Just shows, wrong place wrong time can happen to anyone.

I'm binging this podcast on my iPhone and just found that it's on youtube too (which is nice if I'm on my laptop). LOVING the crime stories, though whenever it's unsolved I feel the murderer(s) get away with it and it infuriates me. Solved cases always satisfy me more (though still adore the podcasts :P )

It's interesting that the savage murder of the cleaner a year later in Wollongong also occurred within 100 meters of a train station in an very seedy area where vagrants would often sleep. It's possible both crimes were perpetrated by a train hobo/beach bum, possibly because summer school holidays offered him opportunities or that he attended school. This may be supported by the fairly advanced home made nature of the spear found near the boy crabbing was found. A home made spear is harder to trace. Someone who hangs out with other beach hobos would soon learn how to make a spear. It also possible the girls attended a kind of hobo/pervert/tramp beach party where Christine had a drink, I would imagine tramps might spend the night there. This also might be the reason not many who were seen in the area came forward. The girls may have been invited to meet someone at the beach or sandhills which was why they were quite determined to be there, but were not able to due to the weather. This could also be linked to the boy appearing angry coz they didn't come (or possibly because they didn't bring food), furthering support that he was a tramp. Wilder was a well built 19 yo and would be less likely to have needed to rest dragging a body, however after the physical exertion of killing /chasing 2 girls may have just needed to obscure the body quickly. I wonder if more than one person is involved to some extent? Maybe a young (homeless?) boy procured the girls where an older man was involved in the murder. It's also worth nothing the area where Anna Dowling was found is fairly large area surrounding a small medical research atomic reactor used for camping, dumping and trail biking as it is unsuitable for habitation. Great research and presentation BTW. It's good that people don't stop trying to catch these bastards. Keep it up.

If the cops have DNA from the girls clothes why have they not compared it, and excluded the DNA from Percy and Wilder? Wilder lived at meadowbank, around the corner from the girls. If anyone had known them and arranged to meet it was him. Interesting bit of personal trivia regarding this case: we lived in Cronulla at the time. Trevalyn st leading down to Shelly beach. I was in kindergarten at S. Cronulla school at the time. Came home one day to discover a teenage boy living in our house. I was told he was a border. Fair ish brown hair. I liked him as he used to play football with me. Some time later he disappeared. He had evidently been robbing houses in the area and my father kicked him out. We abruptly moved a month later. Feb 65. I remember his name for one very good reason: he was no border but one of two sons my mother had in a previous marriage. Both of them ended up being vicious criminals and one died in jail. It’s always nagged at me that he has something to do with these deaths.

I want to comment about Wolfgang, the 7 year-old eyewitness. I don't consider the additions to his original statement as "changes." He was trying to remember more, and as he did, he offered additional information to what he said since he was prompted to. I find it odd that young people at the age of 9 aren't considered credible witnesses in a murder case yet with this one, a 7 year-old is not only accused of changing things but are demanding a whole lot from him.
