Case 25: Prue Bird

DESCRIPTION
“If any bastard ever thought about going to the cops about us, they’ll be killed and so will their fucking families. And if we don’t get them, our mates will. It would be a shame if anything happened to your sweet little Prue, wouldn’t it”.
Those words were allegedly said by one of the men convicted for the Russell Street Bombing that we covered the last episode.
The person he said those words to? Paul Hetzel…

I knew this young girl, I lived a few streets away. Still remember the day we all heard about it. So very sad and heartbreaking for her mum 😢💔

Me too. I remember when her uncle or cousin I can't remember exactly but he was atleast 30 approached me at Dailey street shops as I was waiting for fish and chips after lacrosse training, asking if I'd seen her as she was missing, my heart sunk hearing that as it didnt happen as rough as glenroy and broadmeadows could be at times. So sad I'm glad atleast some of what happened to her has come to light seeing those pictures of her in her stussey shirt around the neighbourhood for years always gave me a sense of disquieting. I hope she can be laid to rest one day if Camalleri ever decides to give up the location so her mother can atleast have a place to visit.

As always you kept me intrigued all the way till the end. So sad for her mom. And tragic and horrible for Prue. It was unfair and unacceptable for her life to be taken from her. Justice will come. Not here. But when the coward that murdered her will come face to face with our Creator. Rest in peace Prue❤🙏 Thank you for covering her case Casefiles.

There is a non Russell Street angle to this as well. In one of Andrew Rule's/John Silvester's underbelly books (Underbelly 3 from 1999), there is strong credence given to the possibility that Paul Hetzel's best mate Maurice Marion murdered Prue. Marion is suspected of being Mr Cruel as well. This Marion guy was a well known armed robber and rapist who also somehow managed to land himself a few acting roles. There is a strong possibility that Prue was sexually abused by some of the company her grandmother and Hetzel were involved with as well. Despite the conviction of that piece of shit Camilleri for Prue's murder, i still think there is a lot of open and unanswered questions to this case. RIP Prue i pray and still hope that they will find your body someday, and that your friends and family will finally have some long awaited closure.

Prue's disappearance does remind me a lot of the Mr. Cruel cases. Interesting connection to Hetzel too. Thanks for sharing this

Thanks for the coverage. At 17:27 "Jenny and Paul" should be Julie and Paul. You say at the end that efforts are ongoing to try and locate Prue's body. Which efforts are they?
