DESCRIPTION
Although Alcatraz Prison had since been repaired to a workable condition, the battle scars of Bernie Coy’s 1946 violent failed escape remained visible throughout the cell house.
Areas of the floor were chipped, cracked, and faded black from where grenades had detonated.

I’ve heard so many versions of this, but none come even close to the research and attn to detail. Almost didn’t listen bc I thought I’d heard it all before… how wrong can one person be. Thank you.

I remember reading that one of the prisoners or a guard had mentioned that Frank Morris had been taking lard from from the kitchen to possibly use on their bodies to have a better chance of fighting the cold waters and hypothermia.

I loved this episode. It was a pleasure to listen to. I've always been fascinated by this case and it was so refreshing to hear your take on it. Great work 😁

Clearance Carnes (the last survivor of the failed 1946 escape attempt) played a role in the escape. His job in the library made it easier to hide the smuggled contraband before distributing them to the escapees. He was considered an informant who also had knowledge of the shakedowns (since he was often targeted). Even though the guards would search every inch a prisoner’s cell, the one place they never checked were the air vents (in the back of the cells). But as soon as the escape was discovered they began checking that spot and during those inspections, 3 other inmates actually had holes drilled in the back of their cell walls. June Stephens, Woodrow Wilson Gainey, and Robert Leroy Williams. All 3 were on the same block as Morris, West and the Anglin Brothers were. However Stephens and Gainey were housed on the 3rd tier and they were forced to back out prior to the breakout. The idea of breaking into the corridor could only be accomplished from the ground level because doing it from any of the upper tiers would’ve been dangerous and risky. Bobby Williams was housed on the ground level but I believe that he backed out on his own.

In December of 1962 marked the final escape attempt from Alcatraz. Bank robbers John Paul Scott and Darryl Parker broke out through the kitchen basement window using string soaked in floor wax and scouring powder to cut through the bars. They made their way to water and inflated surgical gloves to use as float. Parker gave up and turned back while Scott kept going only to find himself landing on a rocky shore (near the Golden Gate Bridge) half dead from hypothermia and exposure. Scott was later discovered by 4 teenagers, who they first thought was a bridge jumper. He was rushed to a nearby hospital (Letterman Army Hospital) before being recaptured. The bay’s temperature at the time of that escape attempt was much colder than the night of June 11. Scott’s escape attempt did prove that Alcatraz wasn’t actually escape proof.

I wonder what the tidal condition was at the time of that escape and if he had done anything to reduce hypothermia.
