That’s pretty smart making new pistons out of stainless. I really wish we could go back to the old days when you could go to the parts store and buy a rebuild kit for passenger vehicle callipers.

I've done this for pistons on old motorcycle calipers where decent replacements are unobtanium. There's usually some guy on ebay who will turn a stainless caliper piston if you post them your old pitted one.

those calipers are plenty big enough, if you account for the gear reduction AFTER where they are installed. Also, everybody complains about how expensive john deere parts are, but noone bats an eye when a CUSTOM MADE brake piston for a case is cheaper then a stock one?

That Toyota is an excellent workbench. It is also a pretty good forklift. Much better than cheap ones with no shock absorption for the driver and it does have a better view of the load when you are picking up difficult loads.

I’ve always been amazed at the brakes that they put on big ass farm tractors. My mother in laws Honda Accord has bigger brakes than most 100 hp tractors. Especially now with all the push button transmissions.

I think people have forgotten that you shouldn't be relying 100% on service brakes. The engineers who are use to the mix of systems also forget that people have become accustomed to the video game mentality of driving. Which is gas to go, brake to stop nothing in-between matters.

On a sidenote when I eventually get rear ended I bet it'll be a combination of the other driver looking at their phone and me engine braking without brake lights from pressing the brake pedal. And I live in a part of Europe where a lot of people still prefer a manual gearbox.

They have a big mechanical advantage being mounted at the transmission, whatever axle ratio they use multiplies the braking torque. Still wouldn't want to ride the brakes down a long hill though, all the heat's gonna be concentrated in that one disc.

@@BitterCynical yes and no, When you drive a large vehicle, and go through the mountains or other tight areas (yes believe it or not we do have those in the united states :D ), your service brakes alone an the heat your putting into them can';t be your only tool. so gearing down to save the brakes for when you need them is a real thing. Not to mention if you love track driving, the ability to balance the vehicle with the throttle and gearing for corners is pretty big i my book. I don;t think the car manufactures made it any better in the mid 90's on with how they designed electronic transmissions and cruise control. Many are reluctant to incapable of correctly down shifting or performing correctly. Cheaper mass production city cars are the worse offenders of this in my experience as they aren't expected to have the loads that even small pickup trucks or utility vans experience.

Light but fast vs slow but heavy. In the end we’re just turning that energy to heat. Most tractors switch the front wheel drive on when braking to improve traction for engine braking, and also it’s at least a 2-3x larger Diesel engine compared to a car (= better engine braking)

I worked in a gold mine in Nevada. The use of anti-seize was absolutely critical. In one week 3 cases of anti-seize was used in one area of the mine. There wasn’t a single door knob, telephone, wrench handle ortool box that was not anti-seized generously. It got so bad that if you needed anti-seize you had to sign it out of the Forman’s office. No one wanted to sign it, out because if it was found where it wasn’t supposed to be. Whoever had it signed out would get the ass chewing. If you had it signed out it became a gameto get it awayfrom you so some one could go smear a door knob.

Usually what I've seen in cars the hollow part of the piston points outside so there is need for less brakefuild and also I'm guessing the piston is sturdier because the solid part is always inside the cylinder.

the flickering light is an led only situation. the light will be running 30hz for example and if your filming in same 30 fps it will pick up. im pretty sure thats how it works

It would be so easy to machine new pistons for the brake caliper, or weld them up and machine them back to spec. I am forced to make custom brake parts for many different applications.

Brakes on the 9000 series steigers are sketchy, had a 9390 over-run on me going down a hill once and I lost steering.. pretty much just had to hold on until the bottom of the hill lol :( EDIT - For reference had a 57ft flexicoil air seeder and P1060 air cart hooked up behind it.. loaded. Also maybe had 3200 gallons of liquid fert..

Yeah I’ll be ordering a massive list of parts I need for my truck the once I’m into it I’ll find more shit that’s broke, so I’ll have to break shit to break more shit to fix shit. That ONE caliper is the only brakes on that huge tractor? Just ONE caliper? I know they don't travel very fast when working in the field but when you count all the heavy implements that it tows, that is not much brake!

I think it's a Case thing. I had a '64 530 CK skip loader and the brakes were anemic as heck. My neighbor had a diesel 530 with the Backhoe on it and the brakes barely worked with that extra weigh. Slightly uncomfortable in hill country.

There’s a pretty big gear advantage for the brake. Plus when you burn the pads out you have to buy a bunch of stuff to fix it. Which generates money for the company.

@@littlemannot True, but I was repairing internal wet brakes in the early 90s so I expect it probably has more to do with the expense. Internal wet brakes would increase the cost of the machine a fair amount and servicing them is also expensive. I was just surprised it was using such an old design. Then again, he repaired it in less than a day, while re-lining and servicing wet brakes took me a few days since the differentials had to be removed and completely disassembled. The more I think about it, those tractors always operate on flat ground so braking is not as demanding as something working down in a rock quarry or conditions similar. Still... a single caliper for such a large machine just seems wrong. LOL

that pitting is from not bleeding the old (water contaminated) fluid off.....which is recommended in the owners (and service) manuals . brake fluid (some types) will actually PULL!!! water from the air water boils.... brake fluid dont steam compresses...... brake fluid (thats new) doesnt . i can tell you my 325,000 mile 99 buick centurys brake pedal felt SO SO SO much better after i bleed the BLACK AF fluid out of the calipers.... used about a 1/4 gallon of fluid to bleed all 4 corners...... . bbut the pedal feel..... and the fact i dont have ANY fade is pretty nice . . before, id JUST start to get a soft pedal.... headed to the floor..... EVERY TIME i came down this hill on my work commute now, it stays firm..... . . more control, better feedback, safer....... AND!! prevents this exact thing
