I have 4 large case trappers, 2 carbon steel, 2 stainless steel. I use mine for the original purpose...skinning animals ive trapped. Ive gutted and skinned deer with them, camping chores, at work in the railyard working on locomotives. Cutting rubber, rope, cardboard, pencils. I feel comfortable using it in the place of a lock blade. I love your videos, please keep them coming!

LOVE this video Paddy! I carried a Case Trapper for over 7 years as my only knife. I got into the knife hobby when I finally sharpened most of the blade away and cut a live wire on accident that put a big hole in my clip point blade lol. When I looked for a new knife, I watched 1000 videos on KZbin and decided I can’t just have 1 knife anymore because I liked too many of them and couldn’t choose anymore. 🤣 All that said, I bought a new Trapper a couple months ago in CV steel and Chestnut bone. It’s beautiful and even though I have other knives to carry, when I know I’m gonna do more work than normal, it goes in my back pocket and gets put to work properly. Great video. I enjoyed it tremendously

Thanks for explaining this properly. A knife is a tool, not a fidget gadget. Gentlemen open and close their knives with two hands (talkin' EDC, not Tactical). I always carry at least three knives and are dedicated to the task...one modern folder for tactical (sometimes a fixed-blade), one tiny one like a Spyderco Manbug or Leatherman Squirt on my key-chain (which will open any box/parcel) and my one for EDC choice is any small 3" slip joint. It's just so much more elegant, if not in a hurry to defend yourself. Love the look of the old ivory and bone even if it's acrylic. But, I must admit...I love to play with my 940-1 (it's the feel, not 'cause I'm a fidget freak). ;)

So hello and thank you for all the great vids. My current SIC (stuff I carry ) is a victorinox farmer and a Schrade 960T with tweezers and pik that I received from my kids about 17 years ago for fathers day . The schrade is US made and has been a faithful friend in deed . I have a case trapper in SS with the yellow delrin scales and it's a work of art. I just bought a Boker trapper in SS a few days ago and it's near perfect great German quality. I have a few stockmans but really I like the trapper pattern in large sizes 2 useful blades that can do just about anything you need to do plus that longer Spey blade can reach right in a jar of peanut butter in a pinch

Unfortunately, as a kid growing up in the 60’s, hiking and camping in the woods of Oregon, I got cut quite a few times by slip joints. Perhaps I was clumsy :). I like slip joints but I reduce the chance of cutting my self a bit by only using locking blades. Your demonstration of how to hold and use the slip joint without cutting yourself is excellent. Thank you.

I've been carrying that same Case Trapper in chrome vanadium for many years, and it's never let me down nor closed on my fingers. Between it and an SAK FieldMaster in the other pocket and a Victorinox Swiss Tool X on my belt , I've pretty much got all the bases covered. The Trapper has skinned and gutted many a deer and wild boar, fish, small game as well as cut many a steak, pork chop, SPAM, you name it. But I have to agree with a comment you made about Case's QC these days. If I can't hold it in my hand and inspect it, I ain't buying it. Rough Ryder on the other hand is turning out some real quality knives these days for a very affordable price point.

Great explanation on using the kick and proper use of a slipjoint. One caution though, do not "stab" with a slipjoint. Put the point up against the material and "push." The force from "stabbing" can cause your hand to slip on the knife and cause the blade to fold up on your fingers. By "pushing" you can control the knife and the direction the blade takes going through the material. For instance, "stabbing" an inflated rubber tire will usually just cause the knife to bounce off and/or cause even a lockblade to fold up on your hand. But, "pushing" the point through is much easier, more efficient, and less dangerous to your fingers. Just my 2 cents.
@fpassow14 жыл бұрын
The main thing I've noticed about slipjoint safety is that I'm 100% safe when I open the knife. But after a few minutes working with it, I might bump the back of the blade or do something else where the spring saves me. Never cut myself. But I might go get a locking knife for a task that will take some time.

I have been using my Rough Rider black micarta carbon canoe for the last couple of weeks, ostensibly as a secondary knife to the QSP worker, but, I have been preparing sticks to make walking sticks and have found the canoe is perfect for stripping bark off seasoned sticks and trimming down the knots. This is on almond, olive and juniper woods, all very hard and resiny, all I need to do is a quick strop in between sticks and I am good. I reckon a day of work like that is about equivalent to a week or more of cardboard cutting and the knife takes it in it's stride, so yes, you can use a slip joint as a work knife. The first locking knife I ever had was as a teenager in the sixties, before that it was only slip joints back to when I was six or seven years old, we all had a penknife of some sort when I was a kid and would cut and whittle sticks and stuff. The only time I ever had a slip joint blade close on me and give me a cut was my first Leatherman, the original PST, they didn't lock and the pivots on mine had a habit of loosening up, aside from that even as a kid no problem with slip joints. In the seventies and eighties, I used to do a fair bit of shooting (UK), mostly bunnies and pigeons but also did a bit of deer culling with a mate, he would skin and dress a deer with a big old stockman and nothing else so a slippy is fine for anything and they have been for a couple of hundred years.

Great video Paddy. I carried traditionals early in my life because that's all we had. The main reason I switched to modern knives is they are more fun to deploy. That, and for most of my life, flipper knives were considered switchblades, & the penalty for having one was the same as carrying a pistol illegally. Now it's no big deal in Texas. I've come back to traditionals & have been enjoying the variety. Plus, you can get several Rough Rider's for the price of one modern budget knife .

I carried slipjoints exclusively from age 9 to 14 and can safely say I was never cut because the blade closed unexpectedly. In fact, I challenge viewers to show a photo or video of any task where a knife is being used as intended where this can happen. People who can't take responsibility for their own actions are the reason they have to put "do not stick in eye" on screwdrivers now.

For me, any knife can be a work knife. I can, and have used a mini trapper to gut a deer with. Its not the size of the blade, but how you use that blade. You can take a 1" long blade and cut through a 4" thick board. It will take longer, but it will still do it. Shorter blades are less apt to break, over a long blade of the same thickness. I have never carried a knife with a blade longer than about 3" long. I have long bladed hunting knives, but still prefer my small blades to do the job. The only thing I have against most all case knives, are the thin blades. They are pretty knives for collecting, but they are too thin for me.
@slick_slicers4 жыл бұрын
My most regular task is chopping my breakfast apple, and this is the best knife for that. A thin, long flat ground blade is exactly what you need. The spay is less useful, but it’s stout and strong and good for heavier jobs. Mine is in blue jigged bone, with a smart red enamel shield. I’ve also got two medium Case trappers, one with a bottle opener instead of the Spay, the other a dropped point skinner, more like a copperhead. All nice knives!

Traditionals are really mostly for collecting if we are honest, which is fine. Having a few to carry is cool too, but smaller patterns seem more practical to me. The trapper seems too big and heavy for edc, unless you are…a trapper.

You know what you should do if you are that guy who pries with a knife? Buy a trapper, remove the pins, remove one of the blades, stick in a mini pry bar, pin it back together. Then you have a dedicated blade, and a dedicated pry. I am considering buying a Case Trapper, and actually removing the second blade to cut the width down significantly for EDC.

If you really honest you would see that the modern knifes (axis lock, front flip, liner lock, thumb flip, etc..) are just fidget toys. If you want to peel an apple nothing beats removing the stem, peeling and cutting the centre out like a traditional stockman or trapper clip point. Nothing. I have been buying all these knew knifes and my Medium Stockman is still my all time favourite knife for my daily apple routine. Need to strip some wire or open a box 3 blades to do the job. Grand Dad knew best, today people just use their knifes as fidget toys. I love them all but recently have moved back to collect traditional slip joints.

I've cut myself more from fidget flicking my Sypderco or Byrd open, and or from closing some of my liner lock's and not getting my finger out of the way in time, than having a slip joint close on me. All an issue of bad technique rather than design flaw. I carried slip joints for many years with very few issues. Those issues were my fault not the fault of the knife.

I disagree regarding the Sodbuster. They are great, if not even archetypal, work knives! The larger ones, even Schrade or Rough Rider are some of the best work knives there are, preferable to even my 940 or similar. I don’t think the size of the kick matters. Fear of slipjoints is just an irrational phobia born of a foolish over reliance on locks which are susceptible to failure.
