Case of the time Ray was escorted off the job

I was a 1st year apprentice and the journeyman Tom was showing me how to calculate the combustion air for a boiler room. His calculations showed the one opening was too small and could create a dangerous situation. Impulsively, Tom broke out a pane of glass in the window at the exact time the maintenance director walked in. We were escorted off the job. I think about that job and although I dont agree with Tom's methods, he was right. Im curious what you would do if you encounter a similar dangerous situation on a job.

Reminds me of an old guy that would always tell the customer “ I fixed your piece of shit again” right before handing them the work order/bill. Every customer absolutely loved him. Always requested him by name. 😂

I stilll have my Lufkin 6' rule and my original Channelock pliers. And I had the pleasure of working under a Master Fitter and a Master Electrician. Both had their quirky ways and it could take a long time to adjust to their whims. But every minute was worth it. I think things went just fine, up until the powers that be demanded Tom's removal.

Wow cool My first 6 foot rule was lost inside a power plant when I dropped it off scaffolding. Tom was one of the smartest techs I ever worked with and he used to keep formulas inside that tablet of his. Tom and the Maintenance Director were like two rams, banging horns.

I believe it was the lack of combustion air

Sorry misread the question. Sooting is usually caused by inadequate combustion air, wrong air to fuel ratio, negative condition in the boiler room, overfiring the boiler, excess draft, or blocked flue passages

Have you ever been asked not to return because they did not like your diagnosis of a problem and then called back to take care of the issue? That might be a good story for a video.

I have but not until after the other tech did it wrong. That would be a good idea. thanks
