The RCMP used to be respectable, but over the decades, they've lost much of it. Chalking Duccan's disappearance up to running off with a strange rich woman for an adventure! How insulting. They knew nothing about this young man, who had been raised in a loving home by two loving parents, but made an assumption that he was off with a woman, although he had a partner back home! Law enforcement has become a big joke over the years worldwide for the most part. I believe they're just lazy and lack good moral character.

Its not covering up, reaching or displacing his death to anywhere else, they did exactly and entirely what they are meant to in such situations, he was retrieved alive, breathing, given over to medical care, and died after multiple days of treatment at a different location....If he'd been declared dead on arrival, sure, but he lived for days....

If, as I'm certain is the case, someone deliberately caused Duncan's family to continue to live in uncertainty about his death and its aftermath for many, many, many more years than they otherwise would have, that person is - or those persons are - absolutely heartless. Frighteningly and despicably heartless. I once went a few days fearing that my ex-boyfriend might have died while travelling, because he'd been contacting me several times a day and had suddenly stopped, and because the conditions on most of his planned route down through Europe were unusually icy at the time. It was a uniquely excruciating feeling. There was NO peace to be found anywhere, not even in sleep, and it felt like non-stop torture - a kind of torture that can't be likened to anything else that I've experienced. Imagining being in that state for DECADES, and the missing person being YOUR CHILD, I can't wrap my head around the amount and degree of pain that Duncan's loved ones have gone through and are still living with. Add to the torturous uncertainty 1) the fact that they rightfully feel betrayed, failed and neglected by many of those whom they relied on to help them, and 2) the fact that they're warrantedly convinced that there are people out there who could help them get proper closure by confessing, but have chosen never to do so... I shudder at the thought. I personally know what those two situations feel like, only to a much lesser degree, and knowing that Duncan's parents have been subjected to extreme degrees of those on top of the all-encompassing uncertainty, my mind is reeling from the thought of the absolute hell that they've gone through and are still living in. I admire them deeply for their relentless fierce fight for their son and for truth and justice amid their endless anguish. How I hope that somehow they'll soon see the truth exposed and justice served. Although it will make no difference, I send Duncan's parents, as well as his other near and dear ones, all my love.

It’s really expensive and dangerous to do these rescues and are usually done by volunteer organisations long after any police/rangers dip out because you do this (hiking/mountaineering/other alpine sports) at your own risk. They can even charge you for your rescue because it’s caused by your own misadventure. If people endanger themselves in the mountains or wilderness they KNOW they’re risking lives if people attempt rescues and recoveries. Usually in winter bodies get covered in snow and it does take until spring thaws for bodies to be found and often it IS by hikers rather than search parties. It’s not lazy, it’s realistic. I personally donate to some of these volunteer rescue groups as they do amazing selfless work.

As an Austrian by birth I feel deeply ashamed by the incompetence of the Innsbruck police. But, this is Austria. This is also the reason why I left to live in Portugal. They do not care for any living being, not even humans. We are famous for not investigating missing persons properly - as seen in the Josef Fritzl and Natascha Kampusch cases. My first thought was that poor Duncan was hit by a snow groomer. The Austrian authorities tried to cover up this manslaughter/accident/whatever.

These cases make a really hard case for grief counselling being a free government service that everyone can access. There is absolutely no evidence at all of any sort of 'conspiracy' by either a group or individuals and tbh the entire theory of one is absolutely unhinged. Either several people are all in the know, together, colluding to conceal two terrible accidents for which none of them could possibly take any blame, or multiple individuals all noticed something amiss, and without knowing what was amiss, what it could mean, what the consequences might be, what other people may know, what those people may say, etc etc etc, they all decided to lie? ...about the accidental death and damaging of one, single tourist? One tourist who was inexperienced on a snowboard, who went out alone in foggy weather, who did not tell anyone where he was going, what he was doing, when to expect him back, when to miss him, when to raise the alarm? The ski rental place lied, without knowing if this guy was missing, murdered, had run off to Berlin or something? Fucking, and in every way, why? Its entirely plausible he fell in some way where he could not be seen. It happens on ski slopes, fall into a depression full of powdery snow and it can cover you. In foggy weather, they'd not be able to see him. If he lost control, or did venture into the dangerous areas, its entirely possible he'd fallen near or beside the crevasse, lay injured for some time, maybe moving a little, getting himself some way out, but wasn't able to get all the way, and remained out of sight. A tiller passing over head could have just mangled him, and pushed his body back into the crevasse, without the driver ever even noticing. Its hugely feasible, its far more feasible than some huge conspiracy over one accidental death, and one accidental damage of a body NO ONE COULD HAVE SEEN, OR KNOWN WAS THERE, BECAUSE DUNCAN DIDN'T TELL ANYONE WHERE HE WAS GOING. The ski rental place doesn't have a log of the day he rented it. All they know is, 50 days later, their stock is all there. That doesn't meant they lied about a damn thing. It means they replaced the stock they likely just assumed was stolen when the ski resort said no one was on the slope. Their stock is likely stolen pretty often, or doesn't come back for a few days longer than its meant to, especially as the only rental place. Its gonna happen. As such, if they report missing stock, but are told no one is on the slopes, or is missing, or is injured, the most obvious next guess is that he stole the stuff. Maybe some staff member failed to get his ID, or some way to trace him, so just didn't even bother to file any sort of claim cos they fucked up. Staff member could be some summer worker, teenager, whatever, so they just get fired, or they leave, and the board is simply just replaced, and given the same serial number for clarity. .....its all common sense shit. IT makes so much more sense than a bunch of people all realised the worst had happened and all managed to conceal it so perfectly. Its just a busy place, with busy people, who were not paying enough attention, but didn't make a single malicious choice. Its a shame to see a case like this pushed as anything like a 'cover up'. The real lesson is about safety, for everyone involved, including Duncan, but instead that'll all be ignored over this nonsense 'conspiracy' idea, when the lessons to be taken away, have all been. Such destinations now keep bettee track of visitors, communication between international police, suport for families, are improving.... and young travellers, young men.....dont freely assume you know what you're doing in every situation, and for the love of god TELL PEOPLE WHERE YOU'RE GOING, WHAT YOU'RE DOING, AND WHEN TO START WORRYING.

even if that was the case, no matter if he’s teen or grown up adult he/she could have said and should have, give notice, especially given that it was accident, maybe he already was dead at that moment, i don’t think he would have any major problems, parents would have forgive him or even be grateful, at least they would have get the answers and don’t spend so much resources and time worrying not knowing what had happened to him. it’s excruciating. we need to be a lil bit responsible to each other as fellow human beings, not some cheesy words, but the only right philosophy, today it someone else’s son one day it can be some one close to us… of course it could have also backfired at him, but at least his conscious would have been at peace and secure. and he really isn’t guilty not legally nor morally.

Given how often there are groups of youngsters doing those kind of jobs, I'd suspect you are correct. Probably been partying too and no-one on the slope that night wanted their entire life turned to crap over a tragic accident. Also, they are less likely to think about the parents and loved ones looking for the guy. I would be interested in checking out the work records from that night, as I doubt that moving Duncan's mangled corpse was done by a single person and that one of them (at least) will have had terrible dreams and memories ever since.

Shameful as their behavior is, I guess I can understand the rationality behind the owner not wanting to accept any responsibility unless forced to. They are protecting their business... but at a minimum they should have compensated the family privately. Even if they had to send an anonymous donation to make them whole on the retirement funds they're out of. I hope the owner isn't the kind of person I'm imagining, who'd froth at the mouth at the whisper of a suggestion that they come out of pocket as an act of basic humanity in response to a wrong their business was involved in. May God rest the family's departed son and send them comfort.
@loredanadincu4300Ай бұрын
Compensate them for what???? If he hurt himself by mistake as they try to imply and then the worker with the snow plow came and hit him because he didn't saw it because of the fogg is no one fault. The only problem is the cover up done by that worker alone or by the worker who hit him and other of his colleagues.

Multiple people ignored obvious signs that a person was missing until his parents came all the way from Canada to force an investigation. Even decades later a local pathologist was still claiming there was nothing suspicious.
@loredanadincu4300Ай бұрын
@renata8979 Umm, what? It was an accident. Even the worker going with the snow plow over him was an accident because of the weather conditions. What wasn't an accident was him or them covering the fact after. And his parents, after all those years of searching, shouldn't have incinerated his body if they wanted real answers and people punished. The body was the answer, and his state of preservation was amazing after 14 years. Considering that his parents ignored some big signs, too.

@@loredanadincu4300"IF" is ur key word here. Parents SHOULDVE been compensated bcz they had to FORCE the investigation. Duh
@renata8979Ай бұрын
@@loredanadincu4300 It was explained in the video that transporting their son's body from Europe to Canada (not mentioning further investigative procedures) would have been expensive and these poor people have already spent everything they had trying to find him. Futhermore, I think it is cruel to blame two middle-aged people worn out by grief for deliberately "destroying evidence". Pathologist has deliberately misinformed them, even decades later people in charge were determined to keep up appearances. Such dedication is remarkable, if also detestable.

I’m not a skiing enthusiast, but if I were at a ski resort or a beach resort and it had to be disrupted due to someone suffering an accident, I would be upset, but I would also be feeling pity and sadness for the person in question. The notion that the staff were intentionally hushing up the terrible incident not to inconvenience other tourists fills me with nothing but loathing towards the place. Furthermore, maybe I am unfair in saying this, but a ski resort in Austria does not depend on tourism for survival as much as some tiny village in Thailand, so this seems a piss poor excuse.

You really don't know how tourism works, do you? Or elections.
@renata8979Ай бұрын
@@Loralanthalas What does elections have to do with tourism?
@LoralanthalasАй бұрын
@@renata8979people don't elect mayor's with high death rates in their cities. International lost tourists who fell in crevices while you protected your local rich ass business guy: also a GREAT way to lose the next mayor's election. DUH. One of the reasons a jurisdiction will refuse to arrest people is if you've got a high crime/arrest rate: people don't want to move to your town. We want high conviction rates. Not high amounts of crime. ESPECIALLY unsolved crimes. So the way to do that is just not take reports of issues. Do you really not pay attention? What mayor or judge or sheriff/police chief would you vote for who let a kid get ran over by a snow plow and left to die and rot whilst they were too busy collections "donations" from rich businesses men to care?
@renata8979Ай бұрын
@@LoralanthalasI understand that everyone is hyped up about elections in US and have a compulsion to insert "elections" into any conversation, but we are talking about a Canadian tourist in a European country in 1989.

I think it was mr.ballen covered this and a snow plow driver hit Duncan already with a broken leg, and covered up his mistakes. God forbid and rest his soul, I hope also the family has all the answers, can understand and grapple with such a loss. May non of this be news or trauma to the family also.

Duncan's wiki page (perhaps erroneously) is more definitive regarding him+snowboard being chewed up by snow grooming machine. Personally I'm not inclined towards coverup, just accident. What a nightmare for the parents my heart goes out to them.

As heartbreaking and infuriating as this family’s story is, you’ve failed poor Duncan further in your presentation. I don’t understand why you’ve chosen to throw the hockey team owner, Mr Dixon, so much shade. If you were writing a who-dunnit, it’s par for the course to throw out a red herring or two. But clearly, Mr Dixon was a real person, not fictional and made to look lsuspicious, when in reality he did nothing to cause Duncan’s death. Dixon’s past had nothing to do with anything that happened to Duncan. Perhaps Mr Dixon was dead himself at the time the book upon which you’ve for this Casefile episode, so he can’t sue you or the book’s authors. It’s not right, fair, and worse, completely irrelevant to have cast such suspicion on Mr Dixon. Shame on you.
