Eggman's death was never confirmed. It was just made to appear that Eggman supposedly died, as Jim Carrey announced that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 would be his last film before he retires. It was then revealed that he would return for the third film, so Eggman may actually die in this movie or step down as the main villain.
