Bob Hoskins actually hated Mario and didn't really cared about it, nor does he ever played video games in general or even known what Mario is all about. Read all the behind the scenes stories, Bob never even heard of Super Mario Bros prior before agreeing to be in the 1993 movie all because he knew 2 of the writers who worked on one of the earlier drafts of the script.
