You are correct sir. My dad bought a new house in 1976 with a full unfinished basement where the air handler with metal supply trunk and round metal supply runs and round metal return runs. Baseboard style supply registers in each room with the same style and number of return grilles in each room. I lived there and the whole house was about the same temp throughout. I know from experience this is money well spent.

I always wondered if i could put another return filter in other rooms...not because it feels stuffy but just to filter out more dust around the house.

Great learning here, thanks. OK FOLKS - PLEASE HELP. 2 years ago had 100% new Furnace/HVAC installed. And, other than my leaky crappy windows - yeah, the house warms and cools. *But* all of a sudden - my basement is really really cold. As in, I need a winter hat and 2 sweaters to watch TV down there. Fully finished basement. I actually feel a cold breeze sometimes - but for the life of me can't see where it comes from. It happens when NO heat or A/C is operating- my suspicion is the breeze happens right before heat kicks on. I've literally slept next to vents in basement. At best a tiny trickle of air - sometimes but there's no way that freezes a 1000 square foot basement. Exhaust fan in bathroom I out my hand on all the time - no cold air there. I've hung toilet paper everywhere - once in awhile I see the paper wiggle. And I'm totally still and no heat/AC is kicked on. But again dont know where the heck the air comes from. Any ideas??? Could it be leaky ducts - shooting cold air thru the ceiling tiles into basement? Appreciate any thoughts, thanks.

Excellent explanation....my home was built in 1974 with one main return in the hallway and the house was so uncomfortable in the summertime now I just paid an hvac guy to put return ceiling vents in every room upstairs to suck up any heat that's lingering at the ceiling and what a difference it made👍🏿, I just don't understand why the hvac guys in the 70's just used one return main in the hallway 🤷🏾♂️

Back in 70 you only need one return for heat. When houses started to be built for air we started sizing ductwork bigger and adding more returns. Need to push and pull 400 cfm per ton of air.
@DR-um2bv Жыл бұрын
I didn't know that was a possible. I thought I was crazy for even thinking it. A return in every room.

Nobody wants to change ten filters. How about one filter media cabinet. Never put five to ten filters in. We put returns in every room but kitchen and bathroom. Have to damper system for equal temps.

Question: i have three story house with return on first floor so close to mini bar kitchen. Little bit cooking there makes whole house smell through air ducts. Can i close the return in first floor? There one return on each floor (total 3)
@JT-bb4lq19 күн бұрын
You should move it. Returndct should mot be near a kitchen unless all he precautions were taken. If there was a gas a leak, it would spread all over the house.
@porkchop102 жыл бұрын
Every room having a filter is not basic stuff, it sounds restricted. Most average size homes have 2, maybe 3. I've been in many upper class homes that didn't have ductwork that elaborate.

It does seem a little excessive doesn't it? I'm trying to find out what air returns ducks are actually needed for, well besides the obvious 😏

I think just having a gap on the bottom of every room door is enough air flow. I only have one return duct and none of the rooms feel stuffy.

Can I have a heat vent be close to a return air vent
@tyrel67323 жыл бұрын
Not a very great idea, as the heat won't have much space to spread throughout the room before being sucked down and returned. And once the furnace shuts down, your house won't stay warm for long. I'm having this problem in my house because "professionals" put the returns 2 feet from the supply.. and they're all floor level (so they easily gets filled with dirt and cat hair) so when my furnace shuts off, the heat is gone almost instantly. Placing the two vents on opposite sides of a room will allow the air to get pulled through the entire room before being returned. As for floor vs wall vs cealing vents, that's a whole other story. But as long as the vents are nicely spaced, you'll have a much better result. Thankfully I got a woodstove, and the HVAC isn't my primary source of heat
