Please do another video on rootstocks in which you discuss which rootstocks do better in which soil types. I vaguely remember that M7 fails miserably in heavy soils (lots of clay). I used to work at Green Mountain Orchards in Vermont and, if I remember correctly, they had an entire row of apple trees (McIntosh?) on M7 and the upland part of the row did OK but the trees on the lower part of the slope where the soil was heavier actually died. So, soil type VERY important when choosing a rootstock for apple trees!

I wanted resilient trees so I decided to go with vigorous rootstock but Im going to have smaller trees by summer pruning and closes planting. Gonna try backyard orchard culture.

I found a wild crab apple tree in a field in Missouri that was 40 feet fall and I took a bunch of suckers from it and started about a dozen small rootstocks a couple years back and last year grafted small royal empire, mutzu, and gala scions onto them. In the first year they got to about 10 feet tall so I pruned them back down to 6 foot whips that went from about 1/4 inch around to around 3 inch trunks in year one. How do I know the potential vigor of the rootstock?

I am actually saddened learning about all this about Root Stock. My father planted a ton of fruit trees in the late 70s. The apple trees never really produced, but the trees were very established. When my father died, my mother paid a man to cut them down. Man, what I know now, that would have been one heck of an orchard with a little TLC.
