No wonder land sales haven't flinched. The problem with farming is land is multiple levels of insane price wise. Just give these old guys more money, they'll just bid the next land sale up that much higher

@notsimplyorganic1053 considering a quarter of Iowas farm land is owned by investors, and a quarter is owned by widows or other (people that have inherited) - I would say that's statically inaccurate... although to your point, if 1031 laws were not custom tailored, it would likely result in lower land prices... farmers are in competition with eachother - add the inblance of tax code and things go out of whack

I for one would love the government to completely get out of our business altogether. No more subsidies no more fake government reports let the free market do its thing… I don’t think the consumers would like it though. Everybody needs to remember the number one job of the USDA is not to help the farmer out but to make cheap food for the US consumer hence the reason the farmers always get in trouble

Yes - there will be. Who knows what its mechanics will be, but if it helps kick the can of the farm bill closer to a finish line, so be it. Many arguments against it you read or hear (here and in other places) are the same arguments that have been made since this became a practice in tough times, since the 1970s/1980s. They aren't going away, they aren't going to stop, they will be modified as the economy and the governmental needs dictate. I, for one, will be grateful if and when it happens.

John Deere don’t want to have to lower prices. Guarantee it’s the equipment companies and the input suppliers, like fertilizers, seed, and chemicals that are lobbying for more payments. Most farmers are fine and can make these prices work, all the supporting companies want the handouts so they can be there to scalp them away from the farmers with higher inputs. The tail wagging the dog.

When inputs are at an all time high you are stuck buying them, you can’t cut back they have you by the balls and when prices drop so far you are going to be negative. If it was just a few farmers it’s no be deal but when it’s thousands it’s a problem they have to help the little guys. I actually won’t mind them just letting all the farmers go bankrupt cause the big ones like us will make it through. There are 3500 farmers in America that farm over 3000 acres. If we could gobble up all the small farmers then the big ones could unionize. We could tell the seed companies what we’re gonna pay. and we could take the billions in profit they all make and put it back in our pocket.

The real problem is that foreign and domestic demand for grains have topped out. China, India and Russia are now the top three wheat producing nations, Russia is the largest wheat exporter, and Brazil is the top corn and soybean exporting nation. You can complain about Russia until you're blue in the face, but economic fundamentals are the problem with grains and grain prices.
