Our community center offers ceramic's classes. Kids 5 bucks, family ceramics 20 bucks per 8 weeks. They have the good clay and wheels. Best of all the mess isn't in my house. Much better deal with an teachers and instruction books.

Wow, I was just thinking a few days ago that I wished you could do the pottery kit. My sister got one when she was just a kid, in the 80's. Our expectations were huge. All the pottery we were going to do with that baby. Sadly it was a complete fail back then too. The wheel couldn't even turn with the weight of just the clay on it. I remember my parents even tried to get it to work. My sister now has two actual potery wheels, and a kiln. Things work out eventually. Thanks so much for testing out these kits. It is great to know which would be a successful kit for kids before purchasing.

I remember as a little grain having an art spinner, and aside from "oh pretty" I payed no mind to the box or instructions other than to say "how i make it spin" learnt printer paper not so good for that, warped like no body's business cause of the moisture in the paints. The runnier the paint the better it spread, and I remember getting those big 16 oz bottles of paints that now I doubt you can find anywhere, I believe they were finger paint paint and it was the only size they had.... now as you saw with your first "test" cause "the instructions don't say" you saw but 1 way to do it, but it only makes simple lines radiating out from where you plopped it.... do both, in this case by not saying "it has to be spinning to start" or "must put paint down before spin" would allow for more creativity as, if the kid was more for the rules of the instructions than i was, they will go with one or the other and only one or the other and wouldn't dear try both... some times non hand holdly instructions are good....but that pottery wheel one diffidently took the "hands off for creativity" to far with no text, and that clay.... oh my lord God in heaven what did they do make a "dough" that is just a puff pastry when fully dry, no wait that would hold itself a bit better than what that dried to its just lose sand when bone dry

I used to have one of those spinners when I was little! It was a Crayola brand(as skeptical as that sounds) and it worked incredibly well, I adored it. It was powered by electricity and you could buy packs for it and I loved making "art" with it with my mom growing up.

Jackie, I just want to say that you perform a valuable service for those of us who suffer from chronic low blood pressure. If I don’t get enough salt in my body daily, I get weak and dizzy. Thank you for providing me with lots of extra salt a couple of times a week and saving me from ordering an extra chili dog to stay vertical. 😂

Interesting tip, my ceramics teacher taught me that if it's too dry, and kneading water into it doesn't work, work it into a ball, and take a wooden dowl about the size of a toilet bowl plunger handle, press it halfway down into the clay, and then fill it with water. Make sure to cover it well, and leave it for about a day or two.

WOW! I had BOTH of these kits as a kid in the 80s. I can tell you then really changed materials: The pottery one had much better clay in the 80s. You couldn’t work it, but you could make a cup within the wheel-the wheel had 3 different speeds and a foot pedal to control the speed. I made a little pencil holder for my grandmother, who kept it until she passed at 97. I did have to add clay to it, but it also came with paint AND a glaze. It also wasn’t that fragile-my grandmother did have to repair it over time, but over all it held up. The paint one was also battery operated, so again, 3 different speeds. Also, the paint was MUCH wetter. That allowed for a way better splatter look. I loved both kits at our cottage, and they kept me busy for a few hours (I was about 12-13). Such a shame that kits have really gone to garbage materials-I mean, what’s the point? That air dry clay you can get at dollarama and is so fragile, it’s pointless to use as a kit clay that you want the product to last. The air dry clay will hold up after you paint/glaze. Love these reviews!

My chemistry teacher made his own version of that spinning toy. He attached it to a bike, so you’d have to pedal to make it spin. Then you pick your colors and drop them in. They always ended up looking super cool and such a fun activity!

I had 2 very similar craft kits when I was a child! The splatter paint one definitely kept me busy for longer lol. They also had foot pedals instead, which was a loooott better than the finger powered one here lol

Looks like the clay they gave us in school when we were like 6. Really hard to work with, not good for any kind of detail, and when dry, was just a crumbly mess that would fall apart if handled with anything but the greatest care.

I will say as a kid I just cut up printer paper and used acrylic paints after i finished with the original paper they gave us. You can also use colored coloring paper since its typically thicker. But we had tons of fun with it. We were not your average kids(my siblings and I) so I know its not everyone's shtick but it was fun.

Quick art tip! If your paper buckles/warps, lay it art-side down on a flat, hard surface. Then, spritz the back of the paper with water just enough for it to be damp all over. Lastly, lay a weighted flat object (large enough to cover the whole paper) on top of it and leave it for a while so the paper can dry. When you remove the weighted object, voila! A flat paper .
