One great way to save for Christmas, without really realizing you're doing it, is to simply save your pocket change all year and then cash it in at Coinstar in December. That's what we did today. How much do you think we have? Watch and see.

That's great! I have one of those battery op change sorters at home and roll the coins, then take them to my bank. No fee charged. They can always used coins either for them or when retail customers come in for them.

I had a wee bit more than your child but honestly I was not a happy camper getting taxed that badly with their fee. In all honesty, I feel more happy going to the bank and asking for coin rolls and stuffing them myself, but then I do collect old coins too, so now I can catch them all these days and not get taxed and feel I got ripped off by a machine. Plus I can only imagine it may teach a child patience, but my kids are grown with their own kids, living in other states. (Their jobs took them there, they didn't run from us, ha ha). I'm the kind of father that at Easter time, those plastic eggs that are hollow, I would hide them around the yard with different coins in them, such as Morgan dollar coins, walking liberty, etc, etc and tell them if they keep the coins until they are my age, those will be worth a lot of money and do you know, both kids still have all of their coins I gave away, all those years. It makes a father beam with happiness that, hey, they really were listening. But anything less than 1970 I keep....wow, I am old, but on the bright side, I don't feel as old as I am, I have moments tho, when I feel my body is 500 years old, enough about aches and pains, ha ha.

Sure beats counting, recounting, then stuffing paper rolls like the "good ol' days"! Or does it? It kept my little ADHD self busy for a bit...WHILE MY PARENTS WENT ABOUT THEIR BUSINESS! Heyyyy, I bet it was a setup. They probably bought coins from the bank monthly... I hope you all saved back some shiny pennies, otherwise the flies will be partying inside your house this Fall!

These machines take 10 maybe 11% of the usual total count. Well, I heard that some coins are worth more than you think. From the years of the 1910s to the 1960s. 1970s & 1980s are old but not very old enough. I doubt you looked at what year these coins were before you deposited them for money.

Many used to offer said machines, many of them have been getting rid of either due to maintenance or in the case of TD Bank where they were skimming money from customers (look up "Penny Arcade lawsuit"), and some still charge non customers a fee to pay for the machine and service.

Not as high as IRS taking 25% in lottery winnings totaling 5,000 or more up from that is, after the cost of tickets are deducted from total but still for larger amounts they may take up to another 14.6 at tax time. Since Coinstar is a service and they do not have their own processing centers, they use armored truck service like Loomis or Brinks to collect and process those coins at those companies centers. Then much like other vending machines they have to give that place a kickback for allowing them to be there. There is also the machines costs for everything from design to service when needed. As for those *no fee* options for you, those participating companies or charities for the donation option are the ones paying said fee for you. I do save much change and what I do set aside is primarily pennies which I almost have a 48 ounce jar filled that started in 2007

They have a phone line you can call ahead of time to arrange an exchange or if you do not want to pay the 11.9% fee (at most) you can do some research to find a bank or contact and armored service like Loomis or Brinks to do the cash out for you using their processing center if they are willing to.

Many banks either stop accepting or doing cash or deposit of loose or rolled or both. Look up TD Bank Penny Arcade lawsuit for one aspect why many that had coin sorters for public use also got rid of machines aside from maintenance costs or lack of use alone even if it was free use for customers or some small charge.
