This incredible apartment is tucked away in an NYC alley behind a parking garage and nobody knows it even exists. Cool apartment, but it might not be for everyone. Would you live here?

Having watched all your videos, I confuse myself by being surprised at high the rents are. I know they’re high but I’m still blown away by it. I can’t imagine making enough money to be able to pay 7k in rent.

New Yorkers are surprised too. WHO is renting these apartments? Most of us don't know anyone who has this kind of money. You'd need at least 6 working people to afford that $8,000 apartment.

I lived on the 3rd floor of the building with the Pippali restaurant back in the 90s- had roof access, parquet floors, one bedroom with working fire place, had a cathedral ceiling and old fashioned sky lights. paid $875/month. Very nice neighborhood.

ffs. In Connecticut, in the aughts, I was paying $475 a month for a single bedroom apartment (utilities not included). In an area with practically no crime. Just beyond the downtown section of town (you could literally see where downtown ends from in front of the building). Moved from that apartment a decade ago into my own 2 bedroom house. Which I purchased for literally slightly less than 6 months of rent from that first apartment shown here. That includes every penny, not just the sticker price. (which only needed a new oil tank for the boiler before I could move in) And this is Connecticut, not some field in the middle of Nebraska. Also not talking cesspools like Bridgeport or Hartford or any of that. Man, the price of living in the big cities never ceases to amaze me. caveat: The house was in foreclosure back when the real estate market was a buyers market. So I did get a good deal, but still...

Seeing rents in NY really gets you back on the ground when you see the rents in your local german city climbing. We pay ~1500€ for a 100sqm flat in the city center, which was a lot more than we originally planned for. But rents are exploding in urban areas atm. Still, paying 7000 dollars for a rental unit each month is just - completely crazy! Who can afford such rents?

A izakaya isn't a restaurant. It is a type of informal Japanese bar that serves alcoholic drinks and snacks. Izakaya are casual places for after-work drinking, similar to a pub, a Spanish tapas bar, or an American saloon or tavern. Very popular in some forms of manga/anime.

I think it might be so the beverages don't get as cold as you want the rest of the foods to be. Those beverage coolers tend to be at about 50F or higher. You want your refrigerator to be a lot colder than that. Me? I want beverages COLD so the beverage cooler would be useless to me!

The first apartment is legally only a two bedroom. Those two windowless dungeon rooms are not only illegal but they're depressing. Way overpriced! The second apartment has only two legal bedrooms, but as such it's only somewhat overpriced. The fire inspector needs to check out this building because of all the egress violations.

Underground rooms in most NYC apts look both dangerous & depressing. Also claustrophobic. They seemingly should be bldg code violations too. But, hey, it's NYC! I'm increasingly admiring the city because it has done well through the decades not necessarily because of itself, but in spite of itself. Cash also always shows the small businesses near various apt bldgs. Do small shops & restaurants generate enough business to allow their owners & employees to live nearby?

7:10, cars right outside the window reminds me of my college apartment. Had a LOUD 1999 V8 Camaro at the time. The spot where I parked was kind of off by itself so nobody would open their door into my car. I always backed in, there was a basement apartment with the bedroom window like 3 feet from where I backed in. Got a job where I had to be at work at 5:00am, after a couple days I got a very nasty note on my window lol.

If I had an apartment like this and wanted to have a cookout up on the deck, I'd use the ol' 'large square basket and rope trick', and load the basket, then go to the top of the stairs and pull it up. Trying to carry a bunch of stuff up that little tiny staircase, I'd probably fall and break a hip (that's what grandmas always say). Still, cool apartment.

My house mortgage for 2600 square feet of living space is under 2 thousand dollars a month in central Virginia. The irony is I'm a native New Yorker and lived in Queens until I was a teen. Normally not a fan of basement apartments, but that first one looked really clean/tidy. I feel like it doesn't flood or else you'd see water lines on that natural stone foundation. Anyways one of those basement bedrooms would be like Superman's fortress of solitude. I have lived in a basement bedroom with no windows, its kind of surreal how quiet and damn dark it is when you turn the lights off, its a real sensory deprivation chamber. Those basement bedrooms are probably one of the quietest places in NYC.

That pole will usually have a hook on it that you use to turn the other half on the actual skylight. Had 1 of them & it was annoying AF. Kitchens in both were tiny. The second apartment if used for a single person , one of the bedrooms could be turned into a living room with built in storage (the room with the sky light) . I love how every single NYC apt is renovated with the exact same appliances. Yeah they're reasonably high-end, but its totally like NYC landlords to have zero creativity about it. They just think that by shelling out an extra $2k for the standard-issue "good" appliances you're supposed to have, they can jack the rent up by more than that amount EVERY SINGLE MONTH.
