The fact that the first hour of the movie is mostly just narration and exposition but is still extremely entertaining shows the talent of both Scorsese as a director and Schoonmaker as an editor.

A narrator could be pretty effective, but needs to be done with perfection... to achieve that you need very very good writers, in this case Scorsese himself and Nicholas Pileggi, who also co-wrote the script of Goodfellas and the last Scorsese movie, I don't remember its title, didn't watch it yet

Goodfellas is definitely one of my favorites, but even though this is much longer, I’d argue Casino is more entertaining though it has more narration than Goodfellas. I know some can argue that, Nicky is essentially Tommy just more angry, but I’d argue still greatly acted from Joe Pesci

In the Casino vs Goodfella debate, personally I prefer watching Casino. There is a constant flow of beautiful music, you get the bewitching and enticing backdrop of Las Vegas and the excess of money, sex, and drugs. @@War_Maker Which 90s gangster movies are more known than Casino except Goodfellas and maybe Michael Mann´s Heat?
@ghenry4513
@ghenry4513 3 жыл бұрын
@@maxis5650 I never heard much of Casino (didn't even know it was Scorcese's until about 5 years ago) and I love mafia movies and Scorcese is one of my favorite directors for 15 years before that. But Goodfellas, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Departed, Aviator, Gangs of NY, Wolf Wall Street, and some of his others were all I heard about. It's not "underrated" bc it does have high scores, but imo I agree that it is certainly not talked about as much as his others. I finally watched this for the first time a month or so ago, and I really liked it. Of course, I couldn't believe I hadn't seen it before.

Vegas is an interesting place... One thing I do knoow about the "mob" era is, if you walked into a casino to gamble, dine, or see a show, you didn't go too far past the entrance unless you wore formal attire. Now,T-shirts and shorts are the norm.

I was going to say the exact same thing, i think he was a real valet guy, this movie especially used a lot of actual people in and around Vegas. Even the senator is dick smothers a guy with a famous show on Vegas for decades and the lawyer is the actual lawyer in real life who represented these people

After Hours” is a candidate for the most underrated film of all time. Made for a mere $4 million, it has all the brilliant style, editing, acting, etc. that any one of his other masterpieces contains, however this one is still an outlier from the bunch - it’s a fantastically strange, dark, nightmarish, yet FUNNY, unpredictable midnight cult film that gets even better with every single viewing. Featuring a once-in-a-lifetime performance by Griffin Dunne, supported by a host of other greats such as Rebecca De Mornay, Catherine O’Hara, and Cheech and Chong, just to name a few. Criminally underrated classic.

Agree strongly. Didn't care much for the last half hour or so because all the pandemonium kinda took away the mysterious vibe of the rest of the movie, but that's a minor gripe. It is great, and very underrated like Jose said. Personally it's my second favorite Scorsese film after The Departed.

@@haroldplum923 I'd say that After Hours and The Departed are his most fun movies to watch, though my favorite is Taxi Driver followed by Goodfellas and then After Hours. Just for the impact those films had on me, personally. But The Departed is very, very rewatchable.

Most of the big events in this movie are true, as was the way the Mafia operated it all throughout the country from KC and all. I didn't know that until after watching, but it made me appreciate it even more. Loved the fast pace, details of the first hour with Ginger operating the Casino and all of the realistic corruption in the early years of Vegas. Also, I liked how Ace made his bets and how even though Vegas was never the same, he landed back on using his talents to keep doing what he was good at.

Interesting fact. The actor doing all the killings towards the end is Frank Cullotta who years ago was actually part of the hole in the wall gang and the right hand man of Tony Spilotro (portrayed by Pesci) who turned Government informant when the FBI played a tape of Spilotro telling the bosses back home that everything going wrong in Vegas was Cullotta's fault.
