Casio fx-5800P Scientific Calculator Review

That is a very interesting calculator! In many ways similar to the HP41 but with built in equation functionality only recently addressed (I believe) with the HP41 Library 4 project by Angel Martin (and others). I especially like the table feature again made possible by the multi-line display. A forward looking calculator that could have been more widely adopted if only marketed in the west!

Honestly, if I wanted to have a programmable calculator, I would just go with the TI-84 or the FX-CG50, much faster and more feature-rich.

fact is this one draws little power from single AAA ... and just got surprised it has more mem than say 7400 GIII (28kB vs 20kB); that casio lang is weird, but its still not crap :-)

I think either would be fine. The biggest difference is the fx-5800p is programmable (and more expensive).

fx-5800P probably will not be allowed in your exams.

I have the fx991, and it's a great calculator packed with features. The only thing missing is programmability, so if that is important to you then I would go for the fx5800p. Personally, I use my fx991 as my daily calculator, but I also have an HP-Prime for when I want to write programs.

Yeah the manual is not very helpful. I found myself looking at examples I found on the net and what I know of Casio BASIC from earlier models such as the fx-4800p.

Hey CC, I tried to duplicate the 8 queen puzzle in my own fx-5800p just out of curiosity and there is a bug, it shows the last answer "5" twice before the program getting terminated. This also happens if I set the N to 4 leading to show the last answer 2 twice ! What might have gone wrong? Thanks for amazing content, really helpful 🙏

The symbol is actually the not equals symbol (=/=). Change that and it should work.

There is a gotcha to the way Casio calculators handle complex numbers, and I believe you fell victim to it at 8:55 . You have to put parenthesis around complex numbers that are created with the a+bi syntax. Otherwise, the usual order of operations applies and you get incorrect results. (6+2i)*(3+9i) This issue has got me a few times. I really like the HP syntax “6i2x3i9” which avoids this problem. Otherwise, I am really enjoying your videos!

Hi, they don’t work exactly the same. The fx-880p has version of BASIC more similar to those found on other pocket computers (with line numbers etc) whereas the fx-5800p has a version of “Casio BASIC” designed for its calculator range. Still most simple programs will be easily portable.

I don't believe so. The Solve function only seems to support simple polynomials and does seem to do iterative solution finding (eg. Newton-Raphson method). You could write a program to do it though.

You said the fx-5800P doesn't not support implicit multiplication, but my fx-4800P does; are you sure about that? Otherwise, this would be the first Casio scientific that does not support implicit multiplication, and I don't believe that.

I'm not 100% sure what you mean but i'll try to answer. The Math sign means you are in Math Input/Output mode. You can switch to Line Input/Output mode using Shift Mode 2.
