Thank you. Not only for the video and process, but for the extra explanations. I know that to non-beginners it's too much info, but hearing how you thought through the traces, the battery connection, the jumper, everything, helped me diagnose and SOLVE the problem on my Casio which was a hand-me-down from a thrift-shop purchase. You gave me confidence to buy a solder sucker and very successfully create a new connection to solve the power issues!

My wife told me her Casio keyboard had quit after a few months of our toddler playing with it. She said the adapter plugs in and won’t turn on. I flipped it over and discovered about 60 screws. Figured I’d better see if I can find a video as to which ones to remove to open it up. After 3 minutes of your explanation of universal adapters and the polarity, I checked the end of the adapter, and sure enough, my son had unplugged it and reversed the polarity when he put it back together. After 3 agonizing (LOL) minutes... it was fixed and playing again. Thanks so much for the explanation and video! Saved me a bunch of time!

Top man Steve ! Just dug out my keyboard unused for years, and it wouldn't power up. I was using an adaptor with reverse polarity, and didn't even realise these things varied. Thank you for being so thorough...as I was about to bin the keyboard.

Just saved my keyboard, couldn't get it to work so I opened it up. I'd lost the original power supply, so was using another 9V source. Didn't realise the polarity could've been switched, fortunately it didn't do any damage to the circuit. Been sitting on a shelf for at least 5 years. Thanks for the video!

@@sean9284 since I realised I've used it heaps, works fine for me. I don't know if it has reserve polarity protection, but I definitely have put it in incorrectly and it didn't work but I do not think there was any long term damage. Permanent damage is possible though but I am not sure where it'd likely be, maybe there's another cause for you that isn't polarity related

Still 7 months after it works, honestly can't thank you enough, feel stupid as it's a simple thing, never would have thought the DC jack polarity wasn't standardised/standardized. I thought my keyboard was stuffed not the adapter, opened it up and was not far off throwing it out. It still works, such a simple fix!

Yep, it's a Devil. Glad you pointed it out. Why do they do that? I became aware that my Casio uses Centre Negative, whilst my Yamaha has Centre Positive, with a very similar PSU that will physically fit both keyboards. Users Beware. The general standard for most DC power supplies is Centre Positive + I did once connect the wrong power supply, as the Casio original supply had broken off the plastic Earth pin "UK" But no damage appeared to be done, and the Casio still worked when reconnecting the correct supply.

Thanks for not making it so difficult to understand like some other ones. I just hope I didn't ruin my Casio CTK-501 by using the power supply. Actually my friend left it here but he said it wouldn't turn on so he he said if I wanted to try and get it to power on then have at it. If it wasn't for your video I would not have known about the use AC/DC power supply and using the proper adapter. It actually was working for about 10min but I didn't want to get to excited so I left it alone and after 10min came back to check on it which right at that very moment it went out on its own and could neat power on again, I was bummed. I really want to get it working it looks like it could be something to get into

I know this is an old video but I just got a Casio CTK-518 today for 30 dollars that said it worked at a thrift store . Got home and plugged it in and it worked for about 12 seconds and off it went . Tried again and same thing . Opened the battery door and it had old batteries in it . Took those out and plugged it in again . Same result worked for 12 seconds and off . Found this video and checked the adaptor . Yup , wrong one . Now it had a wrong adaptor and batteries in it . I took the case off and the circuit board looked fine so I cleaned out the dust and put it together again . Got the correct adaptor and it is just fine . I was going to return it tomorrow . Now I have a great new toy . Thanks man !!

Nice video, i've done the change of power jacks in keyboards many times. Sometime even the solder on the board is ok, but DC jack itself is lousy and it's worth changing because nothing is more irritating than keyboard turning off every time you make a small move. This is Casio CTK 650 from about 1994. i've had this model. It's quite good even for today standards: midi, touch sensitive, nice keybed, effects like chorus, reverb and decent sounds. Much better than todays supermarket noname keyboards.

I don't have all these trinkets. But another suggestion is using an air pressure can and blowing air into power hole to remove dust. My friends kettle Casio was outside for 2 years collecting dust and electronics and dust attract one another. I have to do that once in awhile on my other keyboards.

Hi Steve, I'd like to fix my keyboard so that it works with batteries - any suggestions/videos for that? Based on your great explanation about AC adapters and polarity, I believe my 1983 Casio keyboard no longer works because of what you described, i.e., using an adapter with the wrong polarity. (My keyboard does not have an icon on the back to indicate which polarity to use.) I used to be able to use it with batteries, but that doesn't work anymore either. I'd love to be able to use it with batteries though, so that I won't make the wrong-polarity mistake again. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, since I was quoted $150 to fix the keyboard. Thanks for making this video!

Steve, I've got the Casio CTK 500, and have a brand new power supply designated for the CTK 500. While playing on stage the unit shut off and came back on, but when it comes back on, it's always in the starting piano mode. I have some play in the plug in. However, I put a nail in the hole of the hole of the power supply plug, and noticed the problem may actually have been in the power supply plug, not the keyboard . It seems for now that the nail must have done some good, since I've been playing the keyboard for a while, and it has not disconnected. There is another built in problem with the CTK 500, and wonder if you might know how to bypass it; the unit shuts off after about 2 minutes if you don't hit a key. It does this with either the batteries installed, or with the power supply. The problem with this feature is that you have to reset everything when the unit shuts off. I.e. if you want the unit set up for say an organ setting, you have to use that setting before the unit shuts itself off. I tried leaving one of the keys weighted down and then turned the volume way down. Same thing happens, the unit shuts off after about 2 minutes. Any ideas how to keep the unit from shutting off?

Buzzing noise normally means that there is a spot where either your internal speaker wiring is touching either the PCB, or something metal and electrified inside your case. It could also mean a blown speaker, or your keyboard is using a bad plug or plugged into a bad wall socket, and is getting electrical feedback through the speakers.

I cannot remember the type of switch these used. If it uses a membrane type switch, where the back of the button has a coating that touches a film on the board, then cleaning that area of the board with alcohol might help. If it is a hard plastic button, then it probably uses a tact switch that can be replaced but requires soldering skills.

2A02 is a rectifier rated 2A 100 Volt PIV. So a 2 amp 1000 volt PIV will work, just a larger body. As long as it physically fits, you can replace most rectifiers with higher rated ones. As opposed to zener diodes, where voltage is critical.

The only way to determine the issue is by using a meter and troubleshooting. If i were working on it, I would check the voltage path. Even without a schematic, someone with a basic knowledge of DC circuits should be able to find the fault. Bad AC adapter, broken foil trace on the board, bad power switch are all basic things to consider.

Doesn't turn out?? Do you mean no sound comes out, but the power light is on? If yes, it could be a lot of things. If there is a line output jack, try an external amplifier. If you get sound out there, it might be the onboard amplifier, the speakers, or even a bad headphone jack. The headphone jack is designed to turn off the speakers when a jack is inserted, but sometimes it mslfunctions.
