This scenic off-road trail runs along the top of a mountain ridge and features very steep hills, as well as a section of sharp switchbacks that lead you through a 900-foot elevation change in just under a mile. The road varies from loose rock on the switchbacks and packed dirt at the top of the mountain to a few small rock ledge obstacles along the way.
Although this trail is not overly technical and can be navigated by most stock, high clearance 4x4 vehicles with off-road tires, the steep hill climbs and descents have significant drop-offs, sometimes on both sides of the road. The hill at Waypoint 9 is defined as the hardest part of the trail based on the sheer steepness of the grade also having drop-offs on both sides. If you have a fear of heights, please consider these factors before embarking on the trail.
The Casner Mountain Trail is approximately 7 miles long and is accessible to full-width vehicles only during the summer months. To access the trail, you need to obtain a permit and a gate code from the Coconino National Forest Red Rock District Field Office. Please note that only 22 permits are issued per season, with the first set issued in March for the first 11 weeks and the second set issued in June for the last 11 weeks. Permits are good for 1 assigned week during the season and can only be used for 1 day during that assigned week. Additionally, a minimum of 3 vehicles is required, with a maximum of 10 vehicles and 25 people. There is a very specific process for attaining a permit, and details can be found on the page of the US Forest Service website.
For vehicles under 62" wide, such as ATVs or dirt bikes, no permit is required, and there are no date restrictions. The forest service has designated room for these vehicles to go around the gates.
