Definition: Caspases are protease enzymes crucial for programmed cell death (apoptosis).
Activation: Synthesized as inactive precursors (zymogens) and activated by apoptotic signals.
Types:
Initiator caspases (e.g., caspase-8, -9) activate downstream caspases.
Executioner caspases (e.g., caspase-3, -6, -7) dismantle cellular components.
Function: Cleave structural and regulatory proteins, causing DNA fragmentation, membrane blebbing, and cell disassembly.
