Wow, this is just great. I was thinking of building a function generator for one of the electronics only you tube channels, like mjlorton or eevblog but I will do it from this demonstration. Very inspirational and inventive. I love the use of the DSO138 and the breadboard work. It is great in getting a feel for the values of capacitors and resistors. The visual presentation using the whiteboard, and the breadboard together is an inspiration idea. Very little repetition here and absolutely no danger warnings! I will look at all this guys you tube posts.

A note to other diy synth newbies like myself: If you’re moved to invest in the materials needed to build these circuits and follow along as well as hopefully furthering your experimenting, know this: these oscillators only sound as good as your amplified audio source. I just found out just how good these circuits can sound through a powered studio monitor with decent bottom end. Life changing. Invest in the best audio setup for this stuff as you can and you will be VERY motivated to make and learn more once you hear how good this handful of parts can sound. Trust me. Peter, you sir are GOLDEN. ❤️

Hey there! Could I get some help? After hours and hours of trying, I couldn't get this to work. I made 1 oscillator, wired it up to clock, got /2 /4 /8, wired that up to A B C, but I guess I couldn't figure out how to wire up pots. I made 2nd oscillator, audio oscillator, on the same 40106, wired right leg of each pot to upper input, and connected every middle leg to one of the inputs on multiplex, took the output of multiplex and connected it to oscillator output. But I get nothing, or some random clicking and noises...I don't know what could it be, I use external PSU to power up everything, and sometimes I even get some strange feedback from the clock outputs on oscillator output even if they are not connected (except power rail). I connected Vss, Vee and INH to ground, which I found in the manual for multiplex. Also, multiplex draws a lot of current I guess, since it got really hot if connected to 12V right away, If i place current limiting resistor, then it gets hot instead. Idk, I might just broke the multiplexer, the clock outputs work fine with 1 oscillator, but as soon as I connect them to A B C i get noise and volume drop...I know that wasn't clear explanation, but I'm quite tired from trying to fix this. If someone has an idea, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

So I purchased the Ohmkey, and it looks like it is wired as the resistor for the 4051... but then how is the feedback loop from the 40106 connected...??? And when pots are used, they are left floating on One end??? Amazing work Casper! Like the little scope. CD4060 has a few advantages and can be used mostly like a 4040, cascade if needed. 74HC4060 ( 4040,4020 ) has higher current and plenty of volts for most things. It is 5V logic. CD is higher voltage when required. All seem to cope with a bit of abuse as the Ron of the output devices is mostly self limiting.

Again this video is great! I have made this and tweaked it a bit, but am wondering can this be expanded to a 16 step by running 2 cd4015 in series? I've read the data sheet (and got confused) and looked around the net, but cannot find anything that makes sense to my fairly novice brain... can this be done 'easily'?

alvaro obyrne I use eagle. They have a free educational version. Nice program but will take a bit of time to learn. I took a week to read through the manual and watch KZbin tutorials and was ready to go.

its really best not to. in some cases you can get away with it but it can result in compromised functionality of both the light and the sound.

+loris Habib yeah....thats kind of a special switch. when you press down its momentarily on. SO i press down and it sends a single pulse of current to the clock input of the counter. In the center position it is OFF. When i press up its a latching ON switch which connects a clock to the clock input of the counter.

Hey! Really nice piece of knowledge u shared here. So i've got a question then - how would you make a sequencer step mute function (as in sequence running as it normally would, except muting steps 2 and 5 for example)?

You can connected multiple MUX chips together and have them share address bits. This makes each MUX run through the same steps at the same time. One MUX controls pitch. One controls the lights and one could be passing the final audio signal through 8 steps. Each step can have a switch to determine if the signal will go to the amp or not. This would allow you to mute the signal for each step.

just wow! thank you for this descriptional videos! it really got me started into creating a first box for my modular journey :) i have a question , how would i add skipping or shortening the length of the sequence? for example make it restart after the fifth... another question is, what do i need to take into account for the power supply? it seems my arduino board is not giving enough, as the led's are barely visible in my setup.

ello propello hey! For power I would use an external supply, not powering it from the arduino. Somewhere between 5 and 9 volts DC at 50ma or more. As far as sequence length, skipping steps etc, the multiplexer style sequencer is far more flexible than a standard scrolling 8 step sequencer. The step is assigned by sending binary signals to three data input pins. You can choose any step you want this way, skip around the steps, run backwards, etc. this is especially easy if you use the arduino as your data generator

Yes you can use a CD4067 16 channel multiplexer. BUT the cool trick of this sequencer is that you use different patterns of bits (to the binary address inputs) to determine the sequence. So you have a bank of 8 notes (in this case) but the way you access the notes can make very very long patterns. It's a different way to think about sequencing. Less intuitive than the traditional scrolling sequencer. But much more flexible and, in my opinion, much more playful and musical.

heyooo. sorry for the slow answer. You can use the CD4067 16 channel multiplexer. You would use it the same way that you use the CD4051 8 channel mux but with one more data bit. So for the CD4051 you connect /2, /4, and /8 from a CD4040 to the address bits of the CD4051. With the CD4067 you would use /2, /4, /8 and /16

Hey Peter, I'm happy to say that I ordered an OHM Synth with the sequencer kit. Can't wait for it to come in. However, in the meantime, I have been trying to get this 8 step sequencer to work with out it with little success. I should say that I am a total newbie when it comes to this. My only experience with electrical is with my job (Mechanic) and my home. I am fairly good with schematics but I do not consider myself a pro. After many start overs and much trouble shooting, I finally have it sequencing, but I can't get my 8 pots of the sequencer to change pitch. Also, when I jump my number three leg of the second 4051 to the output of my audio oscillator, I lose all sound completely. I know that I have to be missing something even though I maticulously try to follow the schematic. Hoping maybe you could throw out some suggestions. I have tried to follow the schematic, the colored diagram of the sequencer hooked up to the OHM Synth, and your video. Although, I think I confuse myself trying to combine knowledge from all three at the same time lol. As far as the schematic and the colored diagram of the circuit with the OHM Synth, are they exactly the same circuit? To me, the two seem to have some discreptencies. Thanks a ton, Clint Edit: I got it Working!! I had all 8 pots bussed together, but i didn't have them going to the input of my oscillator. now just need to figure out how to get more range. I'm using 100k pots but very little room to play with pitch.

casperelectronics synthesizers I have a 1uf capacitor for my audio oscillator and a 10uf for my LFO. For the audio I tried .1uf also. What I mean by range is, I only have approximately 1/8th of rotation on my pots before it cuts off completely between the high and low range. I was able to extend it some by tweaking both the LFO and audio oscillator, but not much. Also, when I did this, as I would turn the pot, let's say from right to left, I would go from a low pitch to about a mid range pitch, drop back low then back up to a high pitch until it cuts off. What could cause that?

cjpitrej oh. Hmmmm. Unfortunately I don't know. There are lots of possibilities and I would need to know more about what you built. I will say that I've built this circuit hundreds of times and it works. So when you encounter problems like this on testing circuit designs that you know work, it's often best to just tear it down and start over

Because using a MUX allows you to jump around your sequence in non linear patterns. I find this much much more interesting than the traditional 8 step sequencer that always sequences the steps in the same order

The sampler chip is the ISD1820. But don't be fooled! It's not clean! But it does sample and loop. This is the topic of the next video

!! I actually obtained that very same chip a few days ago! I'm having a blast with it, and granted the quality is poor, but the delay time in the looping is decent. I'd like to get rid of that annoying click, but I can live with it. I'm currently experimenting with putting the output through an op amp acting as a comparator to get peak activated triggers from recorded audio for more interesting sequencing rhythms. I had not even considered that as a possibility! I gave up on getting rid of the click... Most of the applications I've been using the chip for have been either so sped up that it doesn't matter or very harsh and clicky in nature. for seamless textured loops the barbie karaoke delay works much better. 27:00 I think that using sliders instead of turning knobs would be better for an input of the step sequences, because it would work like a piano roll: one could see the pitches as positions of the sliders, similar to notes on a staff.

The thing with the waves is an oscilloscope. Search "oscilloscope kit" and a bunch that are similar to the one in the vid will come up. There're around 20 bucks but you have to assemble them.
