I was a cop (recently retired). I can't tell you the number of people I've seen who have died in their homes and their animals (cats & dogs) ended up feeding on their owner's body. It's not just alligators that will eat their owners while "incapacitated".
@honestlyonyx2622 жыл бұрын
I think about this all the time. Animals all think differently from us and each other; we aren't all wired the same. For example, people get so freaked out when they find out how common cannibalism is in the wild, or how certain species treat their young. Personally, I believe it's important to learn what goes on outside the bubble of human society, both in order to understand the world around us and who we share it with, as well as to keep ourselves and others safe.

Remember the show Fatal Attraction? All about those owners who died from their pet snakes, chips, big cat, lizards, iguanas, ...all thinking they had a special relationship with their pets.
@salmasalute2 жыл бұрын
U have to know there is a difference between dying and being incapacitated. I mean when I'm coughing so hard and then i throw up like what happened to me a couple of days ago my dog runs to me concerned sitting next to me licking my face. She won't eat me because I'm incapacitated. If I die on the other hand that's totally different and its only normal for my dog to feed on my dead body when I'm dead and there's nothing else to eat.
@sharifaa.88872 жыл бұрын
@@salmasalute I agree. Domesticated animals will not eat their owner just because the owner is sick or hurt. Sometimes they will even try to help. But once the owner dies, the animals are left with their primary caretaker dead and no one to feed them and take care of them. Then dead human eventually starts to smell like dead meat and instincts call for the animals to survive instead of slowly starve to death. Wild animals have the instinct to attack at any show of weakness like sickness or injury.

Fascinating. So essentially, as long as Casper still perceives you as “you” (that being; an able-bodied creature that is aware of him and respects his space) he will not harm you. But as soon as something compromises that perception he has of you, you will just be seen as another opportunistic meal.
@unbothered52402 жыл бұрын
That's a bit of a reduced version, again humanizing his perception. In a realistic and blunt sense, along as Caspar senses there's no weakness or vulnerability that would cause a shift in their current dynamic, he's not going to attack. Because he's trained to think that his trainer is superior. They have a symbiotic relationship currently. Caspar performs x y z, he gets meals. He doesn't upset trainer doing x y z, he gets meals. So he's fine with their current partnership. However, this guy is still a large meal for him. If he sensesv that the meal is now suddenly available to him, he's going to have it. It's less a humanized perception, and very very black and white in that they relationship is currently beneficial to him. Most trained animals prefer that benefit, or they're raised only knowing it. But instinctively if the dynamic even seems to shift, they're going to presume the position of a predator and devour / kill /dominate.

It's hard to tell with alligators. Only the owners can really know. It's not impossible for alligators to bond with their owners, but it's VERY rare. It takes luck to get an alligator that can be tamed. It's basically like how we domesticated wolves. You need to have an individual that's born tamer than others, and you need to be a person that that individual really likes for one reason or another. I can think of exactly two crocodilians that have bonded with their owner, Pocho and Wally. Wally I'm not even sure if he is actually bonded or not. Pocho though definitely did bond with his owner. He followed him home and refused to leave, and exhibited play behaviors like they do with their friends in the wild.
@bobbyo58078 ай бұрын
Agreed their are some animals that are just plain born with milder temperaments and when trained/domesticated properly they turn out quite gentle and maybe even loving.This gator is an exception I'd say.Tank the Jaguar 🐆 is another fine example from Safari Sammi lol I'm a huge fan.He has a better attitude and manners than most humans do I swear!

You nailed it when you said most peoples only experience/interactions with animals are with domesticated animals. Makes them think wild animals will react to them like their cat, dog, fish, cattle, etc will and it’s blatantly not the case. The majority of them aren’t out there with the intentions to hurt you, but they can and they will depending on how you start or behave in an interaction.
@rustknuckleirongut81072 жыл бұрын
Do not think a cow will not murder you if you are not careful. Cows can be vicious and when you are that big you do not need fangs to do damage. Cattle are in my country one of the animals that kills the most people each year. It does not sound so bad or scary when a cow kills because it is labeled a workplace accident 90% of the time rather than an animal attack.
@cryptbeast32222 жыл бұрын
I mean, that still holds true for other domesticated animals too. People still get killed by horses, dogs, camels, ect all the time because they don't take it seriously that any animal with the capability to kill may do so if untrained or set off. Your dog who knows you and is trained by you is not the same as some random dog in a park running up to you. The latter situation may get you mauled or killed. Many animals that bond with people will still attack you if you piss them off. Mad camels and cows will just sit on you for example.

You explained his predatory reptilian mindset very well. Makes perfect sense. I have a snake, so I get it. They don’t mourn or develop attachments like mammals do. They just don’t think with that level of complexity. They are more utilitarian I’d say. They’d look at an incapacitated you and be like, “ah well, I shouldn’t waste a good meal” chomp. Also, reptiles don’t always know when their next meal will be so they’re often opportunistic creatures.

I love this video. It’s so honest and accurate. Especially “trained not tame.” And even if he loves you and cares about you, his drive for food is stronger than affection for the person who gives him his food. He is an animal. You are on the menu if you’re not able to defend yourself. Also: we’ve had thousands of years of breeding dogs to be a companion breed to humans. People who compare any other animal to dogs don’t think of how long it took us to get them from wolves to mans best friend.
@cryptbeast32222 жыл бұрын
There's that and many people underestimate the danger from dogs as well. People get attacked all the time by dogs who "would never hurt a fly" according to their owners. Mostly because they keep dogs but don't fully understand dog behavior or how they actually think compared to humans.

I imagine the most challenging thing for professional wild animal trainers when it comes to interacting with the public is our human desire to anthropomorphize these wild animals. Thanks for taking the time to dispel some common illusions we might have.

I was driving with my friend and his dog. I was the passenger. I talked to his dog and he said dont anthropomorphize my dog. I thought ok??? The next minute he startet to talk to the car in front of us, and I thought. Yeah you know

@@honkymonkey9568 "Anthropomorphize" doesn't even have any synonyms 😂 What other word was he supposed to use? Personally, I'm more impressed with "dispel." I don't hear that too often. Cheers! 🙂🐊

Poor Casper he's trying to his best to say Chris is wrong. Such a great and funny video with Casper acting like a puppy.

I do believe it’s one of the rare times when an animal loves a human but Casper is not even close to a puppy, he said if he was injured Casper would eat him and I believe him when he says that.

@@tracygardner6318 Yeah, if humans and other pro-social species can go from loving someone to hurting and even killing them if they act in a way that activates our instincts for hatred and vengence - e.g., by harming our child - why assume that it's impossible for a differently wired species to go from loving to killing when a loved one's behaviour activates their feeding instincts? Even wolves, another pro-social species, have an instinct to kill an incapacitated alpha, presumably because of the long-term instability the situation could cause if another wolf is forced to take over lead of the pack but the previous alpha slowly recovers and wants their position back. Also, surely alligators' extreme protectiveness over their young is a pro-social behaviour, indicating that their brains can generate love.

@@compulsiverambler1352 reptiles protecting their offspring may be a thing but doesnt neccessarily imply that they are loving creatures. It seems to be an Instinct, they did a good amount of Work and wasted a good amount of Energy for the eggs. Reproduction is a major motive just like the Offspring protection. Love is a way more complex behavior from a completly different brain Design, the mammal brain. The mammal was build to have a very deep coonection to his Offspring and is mostly designed to interact with each other. Which makes Love very important to have a protection and a reward over the important Community around the Individuums. Mirror neurons Help us to understand others and develope the theory of mind to understanding the Situation that behind every Individuum stand a cognitive process. A Reptiles brain doesnt need that to survive. It survives by beeing a walking weapon.
