Magnificent. It is hard to make a really indelible impression with a tune, however great in itself (and this is among the very best), that has been so memorably improvised upon so many times by so many brilliant musicians--regardless of instrument. Cassandra Wilson did so here.

This looks to be quite a number of years ago, but Cassandra Wilson was already an utterly captivating musician, even then.

Wilson has the voice but her choice of songs puts her to the test. The piano player must compliment the vocalist. Bring it up!

Just to be clear and for what it is worth: I think that Diana Krall is a great female vocalists who has brilliant timing and her oeuvre is full of wonderful interpretation of the great standards.. I think that we need both the more adventurist approach of Cassandra Wilson and the more popular, superb timing approach of Diana Krall.

Hey David-don' sweat it-but as a jazz singer I appreciate and was alittle amused by all the qualifying-something I find myself doing all the time and especially when it's about jazz singing-the qualities are extra subjective it seems-but my opinion is under question lately ever since not liking but loving Bob Dylan's Sinatra tribute album-Shadows in the Night-Where we live in Vermont both the Dylan and jazz camps are well represented and friendships are strained over such things-The clerk at the record store Exile on Main Street asked "Are ya sure?" when I brought the cd up. He'd had someone bring it back just the other day-they didn't want any money-they just wanted to bring it back. I do think Diane does things as innovative but in a more, ahem, mellow tone. Cassie is a more athletic singer for me-more Saturday night-almost what I find with Hendrix or DeKooning-Diane is four in the morning and I;m a Fool to Want You-but then because they're great they defy my puny expectations and Cass does what she does with Witchita Lineman and Di's swinging-they are full packages and something I'll always be working toward-but on your caution with posting-ya it's funny how you anticapate (I'm using the you tence meaning us both-am trying to look less Narrsisstic with me's and I's-it's a low down trick but I am a singer/frontman after all-we can't be trusted!) the possible angry responses cause if you're like me you think them yourself!-Nice posts-say Cass in Burl at the city hall/later night and she was great and still unexpected even though most were expecting that!

Wow!!! That drummer isn't doing much at all here... The uploader doesn't even seem interested in knowing who he is lol That being said, Rolling Stones magazine lists him as the 10th greatest drummer of all time. That is none other than the explosive and wickedly syncopated Carter Beauford, founding member of the grammy-winning, world-famous Dave Matthews Band basically sleeping compared to what he's been doing since he went and got himself famous. Completely mind-blowing! haha

No Comments? Apparently a number of people have come to this site. Cassandra Wilson is quite a singer - quite a very good and important voice in the history of Jazz vocalists. For sure the compulsion to be "slick" is not part of her musicianship. She has a number of influences like Sarah Vaughn and Nina Simone. I guess it is fair to say that one has to be in a specific mood to listen to her. This is not Diana Krall -and she is excellent yet takes fewer chances and not an emotional singer.

Benjamin David Not emotional!? And I listen Sarah Vaughan,Nina Simone and Diana Krall but all of them has unique technical of singing and interpreting.. Because of that I don't wanna comparing this greatest voices in whole world..

The band cuts it but she has more listening to do it's about space & time & more importantly what you don't sing that make it happen in Jazz & having said that I love the timbre of her voice I'll keep listening till she gets it & then I'll smile & spend on an album or 3.

Josie, I love both Diana & Cassandra, but Cassandra is first & foremost a singer, while Diana is a piano player who sings. Cassandra has amazingly beautiful tone & richness in her singing, and Diana's vocal style is completely different (her piano playing is amazing). But comparing her & Diana vocally is not fair to either one.

If i hadn't known that this was "round midnight" I could say this is any new or unknown song. She's so creative that ends up destroying the music. She has a superb voice though!

I think this was very young Cassandra....and compairing her with Diana Krall is a non sense....they are so different...I love both...but the mood that Cassadra has in her voice is so much richer and the instruments are alive in each album....Diana Krall has orchestras behind her...not the same at all......I much prefer the intimicy that Cassandra delivers.....love her work !!
