I have oil paintings done directly on gessoed massonite or what you'd call MDF that I get from the hardware store. Also, Donato Giancola mounts paper directly onto masonite to oil paint on using matte medium from Liquitex and he is a professional working artist showing in galleries, teaching, and hasn't reported any problems.

Thank you. Love your information. I live in Sydney and I have an Art Request come up from Western Australia. I specified A2 size and sometimes I feel quite comfortable in stating a good price. There was no wait in response. And I also used to send previously rolled up as it was cheaper and would keep costs down, however I have decided to make the frame for them now, as Presentation is a good part of the whole connection.

Great video, thanks for sharing! A tip for those in the United States (and perhaps elsewhere?). Regarding the shipment of larger pieces, they can be sent affordably in most markets (areas) by Fed Ex ground. I recently paid less than $25 (US) to ship a 3' x 4' (three by four foot) piece IN a frame with glass, halfway across the country. Deal directly with Fed Ex if you choose this method, do NOT go to a local Fed Ex affiliated store, as they lay on a considerable upcharge for their "service." Fed Ex will pick up your piece, once it's packaged, if you call. I am not, by the way, affiliated with Fed Ex in any way. I am a fan of saving money, though. :)

oh wow! unfortunately Australian post is much,much more expensive, but that sounds like a fantastic price for shipment for anyone in the US!

Finally got some time today to give this a try with blank paper, my first attempt went a little awry, I got a tiny spot of the gel on the front of the paper by accident (and coloured pencil will not apply over the top of it sadly) but after getting the practice in with my second and third attempts and making sure the front of the paper was completely protected with glassine, it looks awesome, I can't wait to do this on my completed pieces too so I can varnish them :D
@CassandraHanley6 жыл бұрын
+Wild Portrait Artist that glassine or wax paper really helps! It's very easy to accidentally get that gel where it doesn't belong! But the bond is so good that I think it's worth the risk. I had a little gel on my latest piece.(the macaw) and I used some of the brush and pencil touch up texture over the top of the gel. It wasn't perfect, I can still see the texture difference, but i could put colour pencil on top of the gel smudge. Those brush and pencil products are awesome!

I have started using plywood to color on.. you can buy this stuff on ebay pretty cheap... already cut and sanded.. I bought a entire box of 25 for like 15$ basswood plywood.. not cheap stuff... take the plywood and put acrylic gesso on it.. makes a great medium to color on.. good tooth.. more expensive than paper.. but last forever.

What an informative exercise!!! Is there a secret to trimming without shredding the edges? Other than the logical sharp blade..which still doesn't seem to work sometimes :( BTW do you not sign your work its so good you really should...thank you.

I do like this idea but when you go to a framer, they mount your art onto a piece of mountboard, or similer, so can you explain why you choose this method? (Ive actually just had two CP pieces back from my framer and I just wanted them mounted, plus an under mount, this appears quite rigid to me.)
@artisticmuses7 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your instructions on how to do that. BTW, do you have a Patron Page? Or a place where you could teach us beginners, not just Colored Pencil, even tho that's the medium of my choice, yet so rough on the hands, arms, and elbows, but painting and drawing etc. I would love to learn from you. I watch every video you make. Learning about the polychromos white taught me something brand new, and now I use that alot with the polychromos. But thank you so much for your art instruction. We need it 🍧💞

Oh thank you! I am working on a patreon page, but I will not launch until I feel I can provide some good value for money content. Keep an eye out over the next month or two... and feel free to make suggestions on what you would like to learn! Any, and all input is helpful :)

Here’s a better solution - adhere the backing board on your substrate BEFORE you start your art on it.

Very interesting! How do you think watercolours might behave on premounted paper? Must investigate. I often use pencil over watercolour for extra detail. Looking forward to seeing the varnishing next week. Thanks for demonstrating.
@CassandraHanley7 жыл бұрын
I have seen a couple of watercolour artists start their works on paper pre-mounted in this fashion... Considering I generally use watercolor paper, much of my research on this matter came from watercolor artists. The main sticking point would be to ensure that absolutely none of that gel medium came into contact with the working " right side" surface of the paper, as it would interfere with the action of the watercolour paint...

Thanks, Cassandra. I will give it a go!

This is such a useful tutorial, omg! I also had no idea you could use impasto gel as an adhesive! I've been wanting to mount my work for ages but I'm so terrified of messing it up, you've eased my mind haha. Have you tried mounting watercolour paper/non sanded paper before working on it yet? I'm wondering if it affects the tooth of the paper at all when working on it, or if it's best to just mount after the drawing's complete?
@CassandraHanley7 жыл бұрын
iIve seen other people do it, and it seems to work very well... especially for watercolor artists, for whom paper texture is of paramount importance!! but I haven't tried it myself yet.... but I have plans! standby for the results!!

Also I can't wait to see your varnishing tutorial, the thought of doing that to my cp work terrifies me too xD

Good question, Wild Portrait Artist. That is a question I was wondering about, too. Cassandra Hanley, I'll be eager to learn of your experiences with mounting your paper BEFORE starting a project. I may give it a try soon. Thanks so much for your thoughts!!
@CassandraHanley7 жыл бұрын
+Linda K i will mount my next drawing before working on it, but at this point I can tell you that with the canson 80lb paper and the 140lb watercolour paper that none of the medium "seeps" through to the upper layers during this process. Leaving the tooth of the paper completely intact... I should have a video example I. The next 2 weeks to test for sure though!

The board that I am using is picture matting board from a local framer, it is strong, light and archival, so win win win!
