Hello there. Thanks a bunch for stopping by. Indeed, loose or missing pads are a very common problem. Those tend to be a pretty simple fix and there's a lot of great help on youtube. Other repairs are common as well. Sometimes cassettes can look really clean but won't play smooth. Many tapes get stuck or play sluggish. Troubleshooting may be required. Try to imagine the path that the tape travels, monitor the reels as they spin, look for anything that might be rubbing where it shouldn't. Getting inside the shell is another story. It's easy with a screwed shell. Without screws, it's a more surgical process, but can be done with a lot of patience. Other repairs include splicing broken ribbon, replacing parts such as reels or spools, and more. In my experience, it seems most tapes can be saved as long as they aren't too dirty. They're just really old and the parts deteriorate. Certain titles from certain factories can also be known to fail. For example, some rap albums from specific labels break almost every time you test one, even new ones. I reckon it's the adhesive they used to connect the leader to the tape ribbon. Fortunately it's totally fixable with a bit of practice. You used to be able to take tapes to certain shops for repairs like this but it's becoming a lost art nowadays. Anywayyyy, thanks a lot for stopping by and have fun.
