Never had this model. My girl bought me the GX-f31 model for christmas in 1983. Loved the wide range, two color meters and record cancel features. Had the f31 for over twenty five years before it died. Recorded a lotta stuff from my local NYC rock station, WNEW-FM, 102.7 in it's heyday during the 1980's. A great looking machine this GX-f95. My main deck now is a Denon DRM800A in excellent condition picked up cheap for $125. Nothing like a TOTL cassette deck for great recording and listening pleasure. Nice video.

Worked for Akai , Aurex (Aurex was Toshiba) as audio technician for almost 10 years, they both produced some of great audio equipment of that time. GX-F95 was very complicated to repair and to tune, so its smaller brother GX-F90 But both were excellent sound quality machines. The newer GX-F91 was a "killer" but more complicate than older models (also GX-F31/51/71 were true Hifi), But GX-95 "Reference master" was the peak for Akai, GX-R99 was too much for anyone, but what a machine!!, in GX-R99 Akai puts everything like superior Quality , Flexibility & durability. also lets not forget GX-8 and series , I left the company at time of GX-32/52 and launch of Chinese made Akai Mini component series, during my time we were still repairing Reel-to-reel like GX-77/747 or much older models and vintage GXC Stereo Cassette Decks. literally loved the Superb AM/AT amp series of Akai And excellent sounding SW series of Akai speakers. In the 70's my love for AKAI started. This japanese brand made stuff that grabbed me seriously by the throat...wanted it so badly...and I did/worked for it, until I could spend the valuable pennies on the GX-F35 and went on with the AM U-02 and AT-K03 (still remember the different types right now...amazing). A complete set and finished it all off with BNS speakers and Sennheiser HD headphones. It was magic/AKAI was always at the forefront of developing magical stuff and it still works, now, some 40+ years later! Thanks for this!

Akai was my brand of choice when I was a budding audiophile in my early and mid teen years. I had 2 over the years, prior to the double well deck era. I thought they were a really good value in terms of overall quality and sound quality. Clearly I would have preferred to have a big Sony reel to reel, or eventually a Nakamichi, but I didn't have the money for stuff like that, so Akai was my mid-fi deck brand of choice. My first deck was a "Sankyo." Yes, Sankyo with a K inserted in the middle of the name. It actually wasn't awful, but predictably is wore out and started to wow due to some worn belt or something and I was not mechanically or electrically capable enough at the time to try to fix it myself. I was able to step up to a nice Akai with CrO2 setting and later for a second deck I eventually got another Akai in the "Metal" tape era for tape-to-tape dubbing.

If I could magically go back, I'd probably be seeking out Tandberg and Revox or maybe even Nagra for reel to reel. For cassette players, maybe I'm wrong, but didn't it take until the early 80s before it got truly competitive with LP and reel to reel sound? Of course now the irony is that we can use flash memory to store digital high resolution files better than any of those old formats, and yet the overwhelming majority of audio is streamed via lossy compressed formats. NO! I admit those lossy digital files are still very high quality, but why WHY when we have the opportunity to just use something like 24/48 lossless digital that can be so very good? The market for audio is uniquely frustrating since CD eliminated most of the effort required to get reliably good sound.

Tony, it's official, you infected me, I just bought my first 3 head deck! It's a lowly Sony TC-K511S with the dreaded TCM-190 mechanism, but normally I can't afford even that level, it was just a bargain buy which I *had* to make. The deck looks to be in decent cosmetic condition based on the pictures, it powers up, but no tape transport. Obviously needs new belts, and it most probably has the notorious broken gear syndrome of the TCM-190 mech. The deck cost $20. Yes, twenty bucks, I think it's really peanuts for a 3 head deck with manual calibration and Dolby S. It's not dual capstan, but that can be an advantage, as I heard dual capstan is a good thing only in really high-end decks, the midrange double capstan decks can put way too much stress on the tapes, stretching and damaging them, someone says you shouldn't use longer then 60 min tapes in those midrange dual capstan decks, like the big brother of my deck, the TC-K711S. I can't wait getting my new toy, but I have to calm down, it's not good to count your chickens before they hatch, I cross my fingers that it's repairable at all, without buying a complete donor machine, which would probably never happen, at least not in the near future, this deck for this price is really a rare bargain... I don't even know what is the condition of the head, it might be worn out, what would be quite a show stopper. Keep up the great work! PS: Have you considered making a video about the different Dolby (and perhaps other) noise reduction systems? I've never used Dolby, because all of my decks only had Dolby B, which I was not pleased with, it messes too much with the high frequencies. Dolby S seems very decent though. You said in some of your videos (I think it was you...), that you don't use Dolby S, because only one of your decks supports it, so you can't play Dolby-S recordings in your other machines. I've read in some places, including Wikipedia, that Dolby S is supposedly playback compatible with Dolby B, by the means a Dolby B deck would play back a Dolby S tape just fine (better than a Dolby B tape), but a Dolby S deck can't properly play back a Dolby B tape in Dolby S mode (which is not an issue, because all Dolby S machnies has Dolby B mode as well). Isn't it true? A video confirming or debunking this would be great.

Not sure about cassette decks, but open reel decks (I had GX-265D) with glass heads sometimes suffer from track crosstalk, that is when you're listening to 4 track stereo recording, during quiet moments or gaps you could actually noticeably hear bass tones of a recording from another side, backwards, being picked up and going "wub wub wub". I'd guess that effect doesn't show up as much on cassette decks due to different track layout, and left-right channel crosstalk is much less noticeable. Those heads are almost indestructible though, gotta give 'em that ;) Just my 2 cents...
@RafaelRodrigues-iz9nv4 жыл бұрын
Hello. I have an Akai gx-635d. The Gx-heads if not cracked are usually not the problem and will really last a very long time. Usually the problem of the frequency response is on the playback amplifiers. This machines usually have over 40 years old and the playback amplifiers must be reajusted again by using the service manual indications. The crosstalk sometimes is caused by a missalignment of the heads on autoreverse machines with independent heads for each side of the tape. Akai produced very good cassette decks and open reel machines. Usually they were build like tanks. Thank you for your videos. Greetings from another tape fan.
@ZXRulezzz4 жыл бұрын
@@RafaelRodrigues-iz9nv Hi! To be fair, USSR-made glass heads (may be related to Akai GX, maybe cloned/licensed even maybe) also exhibited this crosstalk on completely unrelated open reel decks, even single-sided ones. I'd think that's because glass housing doesn't shield head core from adjacent tracks as good as whatever metal head housings usually made out of on sendust/permalloy/etc heads. Akai sure made great machines, it's just that some of their stuff from 70's is a pain to service due to how soldered/wire-wrapped and tightly packed everything is inside...

Always interesting as usual, Mr Comeback. BTW do you ever sell from time to time some of your decks in your collection, some duplicate?
@CassetteComeback4 жыл бұрын
Not really. I don't buy duplicate decks, except for Duplicator purposes 😁

The GX head is a glass head when I am right? They should last very long. Very nice deck. I remember, that Akai introduced also a tape calibration feature called "I-HQ" for their VHS machines in the mid 80's.
@AVadim4 жыл бұрын
Yes. Super GX - glass-ferrite heads. I uses AKAI GX-R70 for digitizing of cassettes and now made it with more, then 550 cassettes. Heads as new and deck was used before me!

Nice piece of a deck. Would like to know if the transport is 2 motors or, is it a 1 one motor drive? This because the lid is allso motorized. Just asking.
@CassetteComeback4 жыл бұрын
Don't know, not opening it as it isn't mine.
@showstopperrob10974 жыл бұрын
@@CassetteComeback I understand. Maybe the owner can tell You and us how the transport is.

Nice deck! The USPS has been loosing money for years, especially on that "last mile" on parcels shipped via China Post... Sucks they had to raise the rates, but hopefully the USPS can get it's budget balanced. Fun fact: the average USPS delivery truck age is 30 years old
@CassetteComeback4 жыл бұрын
I'm not in China, so why punish us?
@crash_test_dummy_14 жыл бұрын
@@CassetteComeback They made a new agreement with the UPU, which affects incoming mail from many countries.... It changes the "last mile" rate to about 70% of what it costs to ship (the same parcel) domestically... I agree, that's a steep increase... Hopefully they reneg in the future, but that is yet to be seen...

I have the exact same deck I want to sell with the clear cassettes door and the stainless Cassatt door. It’s in mint condition except the last week I’ve been having some issues with it only playing for a few minutes and not wanting to rewind in fast forward. But all the channels sound great and there’s nothing wrong with it besides that so I’m just wondering if are should get it repaired or if I should just sell it and take a loss. This is my third Akai I own and they are fantastic decks. Plus this one is fun because the door on the bottom opens and closes with a press of a button. I will tell you I don’t know what you paid for this but it’s a beauty. Mine is silver and not the darker model but I like the darker model actually.

Not turning it on or using it is the WORST thing you can do with a tape deck. Seriously. Belts harden in oval shapes etc... bearings seize etc.
