I worked at JPL 1974-1986, and remember the series of four spacecraft planned for the next step. JOP (Jupiter Orbiter and Probe) became Galileo. And SOP (Saturn Orbiter and Prone) eventually...took a long time thanks to budget cuts....Cassini. The Uranus and Neptune missions with probes probably will remain a dream for years to come.

It would be a spectacular show on Saturn's surface once Cassini has met its final demise while rapidly descending towards it. But it would be a rather sad day for people who followed Cassini for the longest time. The individuals who have worked on it for years, and students like myself, who have heard and learned about it not too long ago. Goodbye Cassini. You have lived a wonderful life and left behind an unforgettable legacy. We will never forget you.

Cassini wasn't the only satellite that ended its mission by flying into a gas giant, Galileo met the same fate in September 2003 when it flew into Jupiter.

Great video as always. But is microbial contamination the real reason for such a sad yet interesting end. Does that small nuclear reactor that power the spacecraft also pose a risk to potential alien life. If it's any similar to reactors we have on earth, wouldn't the radioactive spent fuel be the biggest reason for this controlled suicide.
