One thing was clear since the first week of the season: Duke was going to be very good, but their downfall would come at the hands of poor 3pt and ft shooting. Indeed that was a culprit in every one of their losses, and their loss at the hands of MSU, as well. Poor 3pt shooting throughout, and the symbolic ending: a loss by 1 after Barrett missed a FT. If Tre can improve his form (double clutch, hitched-release) - his brother Tyus was a very reliable shooter - this team fares much better in that regard. Hurt might be the best shooter in the class, and although Stanley was initially not considered a great shooter, his recent performances show a fluid release, near-perfect mechanics, and resultant solid percentages. Joey Baker should get plenty of minutes off the bench, and he's considered an elite shooter, and Alex O'Connell is probably the best shooter on the entire squad. And incoming freshman Boogie Ellis, who hopefully won't suffer a case of "transferitis,' as he will likely start on the bench with Tre coming back and Stanley occupying the 2-guard spot, possesses good shooting as one of his primary strengths. So although they will miss Zion (who wouldn't? -- he was literally everything for them last year and one of the greatest college players in memory...), NCAA tournament success is most often dependent on a few key factors: Defense (erm... TTU vs VA anyone?), 3 point shooting, FT shooting, and rebounding. Turnovers are important, but aren't, for some reason, as directly correlated. Stanley and especially Wendell Moore are likely to be elite perimeter defenders, and it will be interesting to see how Vernon Carey's bulky build works to protect the rim... Bolden is back, and he's a great post defender, but obviously Carey is the shiny new toy and will probably be the starter at the 5. I don't even have to talk about Tre... we know what he is on the defensive side of the ball. Should be an interesting year, and thankfully, a few of these guys are more likely to *maybe* stick around for another year or two after their freshman seasons... that'll be nice for a change instead of having to rely on the no. 1 class each year and fizzling out most of the time thanks to relying on 18 year olds.

also with Tre's jumper... he was really good in the midrange and off the dribble but his catch and shoot and spot up jumper were awful. I think it was the timing of his off-hand being there shooting off the dribble but not so much in those other situations--his left hand curls around the front of the ball rather than being right on its side--basically, I don't think it gets out of the way throwing off the trajectory. Let's see what an offseason will do for him... AOC's issue is solely on defense--in particular, off the ball. He's not a bad one-on-one defender but he loses sight in the team concept and is slow to communicate and rotate. You could be on to something with the notion of transferring and it could apply to a few of them... Coach K rarely goes past 8 players (7 in big games) and with Jones, Moore, Carey, Hurt and Stanley as probable starters--that leaves DeLaurier and Bolden as the only two other bigs along with AOC, Baker, White, Boogie and Goldwire to fight for what's left over... we'll see who stays and who goes.

@@cavaty78 - I agree--he was a big factor when he had his confidence--in addition to the spacing he was providing with his shot, he was also a solid defender and very good rebounder... tough recruiting class for him to find a role but I hope he does. I think he must beat out Hurt defensively and DeLaurier on the offensive side to show his value at the PF position to see the floor.
