I love FTL. Easily one of my favorite games of all time, and Multiverse pushes that into the #2 slot (behind only whatever Monster Hunter title demands my attention at any given time). This is an excellent review of it - thanks for sharing! By the way, regarding the surrendering rebel officer event - while he can betray you or join you by accepting him onto your ship (50/50), in my experience he always rewards you if you drop him off at a colony. I've never had that one backfire. It's more moral and lucrative than spacing him! Also for anyone interested in trying the game - get a clone bay. It makes your crew functionally immune to say 95% of those events where you lose a crew member. And it's fun to read "The rebel officer who just gunned down your stares in shock as their angry clone emerges from the clone bay" or something to that effect.
@johnnywhoa34310 ай бұрын
You know what? I'm upset. Literally the next time I freed that Rebel, it resulted in the fleet getting a double pursuit on me. Still, I guess that makes it more of an interesting risk at least!
@LeafMaltieze11 ай бұрын
Choosing the "naive good option" can actually give a better outcome in many scenarios, but it's chances of being the better choice are lower than just taking the obvious self servient option. You should play around with it sometimes. Also I have gotten a lot of free crew from letting the rebel, who's escape pod I captured, join my crew. You can space them, and that's the safe option, but I've found it to be about a 75% chance of getting free crew. The other 25% that damage your hull, or kill a crew member. If you're only ever taking the "safe" option, you're missing out on a lot of what this mod has to offer.

a quick correction, the event list you showed for the true ending is actually for the peace ending which is kinda just a meme really, it doesn't unlock anything. the actual true ending only requires you finding a ancient auto ship in a harmony link inside a engi sector, it's a 1/4 roll in an event that always generates in the engi sectors (and is guaranteed in their capital), after that there's no rng involved.
@HumanoidDerpling Жыл бұрын
Ah yes, the non-canon ending (the truest one of them all).

Pretty hot take on boarding! The different types of crew interaction make a big difference there, and it's being undersold in depth quite a bit: - One of the best boarders in the game has an upgrade that makes them incapable of fighting crew (ghosts). They then disregard crew and beat on systems no matter what, with a bonus to sabotage. This is strong enough to be a legit approach to the Sylvan fight on hard/extreme. This is very different from rushing to take down life bars ASAP and isn't intuitive on the upgrade screen, so it came to mind as I was annoyed when I realized how many previous runs I could have used it lol. - Boarding ships can and should integrate weapons into their build. Not just sometimes, nearly every boarding run that isn't self-imposed challenge should use at least the freebie drops and get to 5-6 weapon control power. Bombs, missiles, or even just projectile + beam shots knock out crucial systems or simply damage enemy crew. Makes auto ship fights less painful to have this too. - Quite a few crew types have things that damage systems immediately, like shell bombing or augmented lanius bombing. Ion ghosts fit this description too, same with certain slugs etc. - Raw DPS crew need more nuance. In both vanilla and MV, AI has priority list for systems. You can use this to pull enemies out of weapons, MC + load most damaging guys into weapons, and overwhelm whatever isn't fighting you in shields very fast. With TP4 this is competitive with most gunship builds in disabling weapons quickly...and no enemy in piloting means you can use that 0 cooldown TP to disappear a moment, shoot weapons, then TP back in and keep beating on them with very low miss %. - Except when they don't, like massed spiders with webbing just killing stuff before it can make it out of the rooms :D. I HATE micromanaging spiders w/o the queen though. They're strong, but it's miserable. - There's also a fair amount of judgment that goes into keeping your own guys alive, and evaluating when to immediately counter-board vs first fighting stuff on your ship and then going. It also just carries the flagship fight, which a lot of players don't believe when I tell them, but this video's criticism of it is the "samey-ness", you seem well aware that it's strong :). I've used it to carry on hard/extreme in many runs, and they feel at least as different between each as say using laser spam vs ion + energy builds game to game. That said, nothing wrong with playing the way you want, and it's not like you *have* to play on H/X and try to optimize winrate. I do think you might enjoy exploring using combination of normal weapons + boarding setups more though. Not only does that add variety, it also makes a big difference in how fights go.

I'm kind of surprised they haven't created a backup crew feature instead of having to dismiss people. Like, stick them in the cargo hold or unlock a passenger ship that tails you for swapping. Obviously, it's no good in a fight since it would still be like how you can upgrade or swap weapons only when you're safe but would be an interesting thing to test out.

The multiverse soundtrack is also really good, sometimes better than vanilla! Most new factions have their own theme, and there's a couple of new generic tracks that make the soundtrack less repetitive. Really impressive for a mod, imo multiverse is the best single mod for any game

Apart from the Peace Ending (which is erroneously titled the True Ending by you) and the Slug Ending, no other Ending to Multiverse is JUST "a textbox", but rather, a long and involved series of Events chained together by significant fights, and even Boss Fights, to capstone each run off in a more dramatic way than just killing the Flagship yet again. (Also based DD and BR player, thank you)

I'm thinking the only thing left would be to try to make a roguelite mode where you actually unlock more permanent upgrades like one does in Rogue Legacy, Hades or any other roguelite. Beyond that there's creating spiritual successors, making a mod more like Starsector, changing the dimensions to 3D like Star Citizen, Eve Online, or creating a spiritual successor while switching the genre to more play out the events rather than read them. Thinking about it I guess that's almost like Warframe but it would be set in the FTL universe. Though you could still do 2D, 2.5D, top down and whatnot. Although that last one reminds me of Space Station 13 and the Space Station 14 project. Maybe even mix up some genres and you play Metroidvania style planet missions while managing your ships and crews like Starsector and having some base and colony sim stuff sprinkled in as well on planets you obtain. Ya, now that would be an ambitious project. P.S. Rather than something not finished yet like Star Citizen I would put forth Battlescape: Infinity
@myzimensi Жыл бұрын
So I've not actually played Multiverse though am thinking that I will going forward, I really wouldn't call time commitment a good metric to measure roguelikes by though- given the original batch of them the likes of Angband, ADOM and Nethack were not short experiences by any stretch. FTL does rule though.
@BlueTemplar152 ай бұрын
Yeah, I was also thinking of Sword of the Stars : The Pit (1), which, like FTL, improved on the genre's graphics enough to actually make the genre known. I don't think anybody confuses Total War (and even XCOM ?) into being a roguelike ?? The "short game" is of course directly related to one of the main aspects of roguelikes : they aren't afraid at being punishingly difficult, so your first games will be really short, but then this also makes learning the game very rewarding, as your games become longer and longer. (I prefer 'game' to 'run', which for me is associated with speedrunning, which is a yet different rabbit hole...)

I could never manage to actually win. RNG means I hardly ever get to the final battle, and if I do I don't actually have the weapons to do anything. I might survive battle one, but... It's way too random to be worth playing. You may or may not even get enough/good enough weapons to matter, and late game battles are boring, REALLY annoying shield battle as you and your enemy hoping you can batter down the other's quad shield long enough to do any real damage.
