Yes but also it's one of the saddest. As fantastic a villain Shaw eventually becomes at 2:57 you see Chuck almost get through to Shaw as Shaw lowers his gun so slightly. Despite Shaw's anger at the agency and misplaced blame on Sarah he still genuinely cared about Chuck, going so far as to guard Chuck's secret from the Ring. But then as memories of his wife go through his mind at 3:09 we see Shaw lift his gun back up which ultimately forces Chuck to take the shot. I see this whole part more as that of the acts of a desperate person who ultimately ends with Shaw becoming a fallen hero, which makes for such a fantastic if heartwrenching story. Credit to Brandon Routh for personifying the character who I consider to be the series' greatest villain as well as Zachary Levi playing the part of Shaw's friend and truly trying to save him from himself.

If you want to understand what pushed Shaw over the edge, keep in mind a couple of things: by all accounts he loved his wife. He _thought_ she had been killed by the Conspiracy. It had been a few years, and he was beginning to move on, and had become somewhat intimate with Sarah Walker. Then, he discovers that it was actually the _CIA_ that ordered his wife murdered, and that Sarah, the girl he's been sleeping with, carried out the hit. (Yeah, she hesitated and circumstances were kind of complicated when the moment came, but the bottom line is that Sarah did kill Shaw's wife.) We don't know if his wife was actually a turn coat or not, and either way, _Shaw_ probably takes it for granted that she was not. So put yourself in his place for a minute: your beloved wife was killed, you're still grieving somewhat, and you've spent the time since her death trying to take out the conspiracy you think did it. Then, suddenly, you find out it was your _own side_ that ordered it and that you've been having sex with _the very person who killed her_ . Is it any wonder he cracked?

I got maybe his actions, but i never understood Sarah's actions in these events. Why did she break up with Chuck? In the show, I think they said it was because he killed someone to pass his test, but I think Shaw and everyone had to do the samething to be a spy.

I don't understand why he blames Sarah. She was just doing exactly what he and every other CIA agent had to do - their red test. Sarah had no way of knowing this person had (presumably) been set up by the ring and was assuming she was an enemy agent, the only reason she actually shot them anyway was because she thought they were about to pull a gun.

In a lot of ways, I agree. However, I think his return at the end of the season is really so poignant. Killing Shaw was Chuck's first BIG manning up moment as a spy, but once he did so, Shaw's return was his chance to prove he was there to stay. Shaw's constantly Chuck's better so in a lot of ways it's growth for him. Plus, Shaw killing Chuck's dad is the first MAJOR time we see Chuck experience fallout for his own actions as a spy. It's his first true "a villain from my past has resurfaced" type of things.

It also doesn’t even make sense as to how he survived. Fine, multiple bullets near the shoulder area won’t always kill you. Ok let's be honest here, Chuck shot Shaw at a LAST RESORT. Because, Chuck gave Shaw multiple chances and choices. He negotiating with him, he was telling him to surrender, even to the point that Shaw at first powered his gun. But th minute he started thinking about his wife again he looked at Chuck and said; "No Chuck I can. You can't." And then raised his gun up again and was about to shoot at chuck. This lead to Chuck reacting pointing his gun up so fast and shooting at shaw.

This scene is so awesome. Shaw is a perfect example of a tragic villain. Started off as a good guy, underwent emotional trauma and turned against Sarah because of that trauma. But he still had a sense of respect toward Chuck in not telling the Ring that he's the Intersect. And Brandon Routh's acting is so on point, as is Zach Levi's. And the soundtrack...very fitting. One of the best scenes in Chuck.
@Zenstermans7 жыл бұрын
For some reason I sympathise with Shaw during this scene. Even though his actions were mostly selfish and irrational, he was driven by the deep sorrow he carried over his wife's death for over five years. During this time he's been trying to destroy the organization he thought to be responsible for the death of his wife. How would you react if you suddenly found out you'd been after the wrong target all along, and the right one is actually one of your colleagues. One of your lovers even. Shaw just wanted redemption for his wife's death, can you really blame him. I'm not saying his actions are justified, and of course I didn't want him to succeed in his plans, but I understand where his way of thinking comes from. Also notice how he doesn't want to hurt anyone else but the person who killed his wife: "Now just stay here, I don't want to hurt you. None of this is your fault. I haven't told them your secret." he says to Chuck. And even when he is about to push Sarah over the edge of the bridge, he tells her that she won't feel a thing. These lines always send chills down my spine. It shows how Shaw had not completely lost his humanity. In my opinion, Shaw's character is very well developed and one of the most interesting in the series.

Killing Sarah was by far the wrong reaction though, I get that it was devastating to find out the woman he was falling for killed his wife but like she was ordered to do it. She’d even mentioned before hand that her red test was the worst moment of her life and that it was something she almost didn’t go through with but in the end did it anyway due to a mix of fear and also orders. I wouldn’t blame him for being angry at the CIA but she didn’t really have a choice in the matter it was her mission and if she failed to do it then someone else would have just ended up killing her similar to how Sarah was supposed to kill the mole if Chuck didn’t do it. Joining a criminal organization and trying to murder your colleague was a complete over reaction, regardless of how much he loved his wife.

That piece right at the beginning, when Sarah cries believing she's about to die, then the music changes, she looks up, she sees Chuck, you see the look on her face, in her eyes, and the way she breathes, and then she starts to cry again, I believe that was the exact moment that Sarah knew honestly, completely that she loved Chuck. I know she said it before, and it was clear at the train station in Prague, but this moment cemented her love for him in stone, because that was the one moment that truly terrified her, knowing she was about to die, and then Chuck showed up... I can only imagine how happy she was in that moment, but I know that her reaction showed that she realised that Chuck would ALWAYS be there fore her, and that he would ALWAYS save her, and that, beyond all doubt, that she loved him.

I have a completely different read on it. She's resigned to her fate, until she sees Chuck. Then there's brief relief and elation because he's there to save her, until she realizes that he's going to have to kill Shaw to save her. Part of what she loves about Chuck is that he's not the type to kill someone, even when he probably should.
@marcorava27954 жыл бұрын
@@Q_res you both have reasons. Chuck had to kill Queen when he could, in five years he learned that every now and then the trigger has to be pulled. We can still consider Shaw not a good guy (hero) and not even a great villain. We understand everything about him in 3x04 in the final scene. He lived only to avenge his wife's death, it didn't matter if the ring or the cia killed her. I was saddened that he came back to life, they thwarted chuck's only kill in the series. it was a serious mistake. The authors failed to give her that role as a rea nemesis (chuck's only real nemesis was bryce, as similar or rather nerdy, but with completely different characteristics). Shaw could at most have been a chuck version if he lost Sarah. But we saw that even when he lost it, it didn't become like this.

Its now 2021 soon to be 2022 and I miss this show so much I just finished watching every season of chuck once again I can't stop watching it chuck is my favorite TV series I was only 8 years old when this show ended now I'm 17 almost 18 I wish there were more story to Sarah and chuck I really want another season or a couple movies made and I really want Sarah to get her memories back and I want to see Sarah and chuck buy there dream home together and have a family

I agree so much with you. I've loved a lot of shows and movies, but moments of pure perfection are very few. This is one. The moment when Chuck is forced to leave his father during season 2 with Glasvegas as the music is another one.

This is perhaps the best moment in the series for me, it's great with the music and all. Shaw was a good antagonist, not an evil dude. His wife would have died anyway by someone else, it wasn't really Sarah's fault in that sense. But she pulled the trigger, and he needs to do this. And Chuck finally had to "kill" somebody, not killing anybody was what Sarah loved about him( well, a big part of it) but he obviously had to save her. That kind of kill doesn't really count though ofc, since he saved her. Like with self defence, it's not the same thing then. This is season 3, right? I have watched the series 4 times over, but that was a couple of years ago

The fact that Shaw came back after this is some of the dumbest shit I've ever seen in television. The writers of Chuck were never afraid to undermine their own storytelling

Funny how Shaw told Chuck to shoot him many times, but when he finally does it here. Then later, he's mad at Chuck for shooting him lol 😂

Indeed. And also this Scene reminds me everytime why Chuck was the Greatest TV Show ever made. I learned english just to watch Chuck early than it was avaible here in Germany. And i have to say it was worthit every damn Second and i would do it again.

Yeah, but he also showed the weakness of his attitude when he has trouble pulling the trigger when Shaw doesn't obey his order to stand up. One of the cardinal rules of firearms use is that you never point a gun at someone and give them an order unless you're prepared to pull the trigger if necessary. That almost cost Chuck and Sarah their lives.

This is indeed the best scene in the show.It was a huge shock to listen to "Kettering" in this scene.I knew the Antlers before the episode.Although it doesnt really suit the scene,because the girl in the song is not saved,it still makes the whole sequence much more dramatic.Many thanks to the uploader,and the guy who said "Hey,I know the song that should play when Chuck kills Shaw and saves the girl"

I have to say the roles that Brandon Routh has managed to get since his Superman days are pretty amazing. I forgot about him as Shaw on Chuck. Most recently he was the minority hater on The Rookie on ABC which was a very memorable character. I keep forgetting how many eye opening roles he has taken over time. This is one of the best scenes on Chuck.
@Bek35914 жыл бұрын
2:07 That's about as close to a look of pure hatred on Chuck's face that I think we've ever seen. Or at least that's how I interpreted it.
@Thomaazzz14 жыл бұрын
Shaw is really my favourite bad guy, he's not really evil at this point. He's just blinded by hatred and revenge and thinks his actions are justified because of the murder of his wife. Really good acting on his part, you can see that he's not really sure about what he's doing, like at the end when chuck says :"this isn't you, Shaw" you see he drops his gun a little but then his hate and feelings for revenge come back up, that's what takes him over the edge.

i remember watching this and thinking Shaw was a bit of dork for holding onto something like this. on my second time through the show a few years later i realized i could really sympathize with the character. when its all layed out and you see it in entirety you can see the build and the little notions like when he said "i didnt tell them your secret" or that "the drug will make this painless" he really was a pretty good villain. that being said i think the reintroduction in s5 was a bit forced,
@merikano29853 жыл бұрын
I would have gone the route of still keep Shaw alive but take him full circle. Keep the rest of the season as is but later on (S5?) have him return as a reluctant source of information and then force him into a situation of the enemy of my enemy is my friend so he allies with heroes again - especially since the heroes themselves have quit the government. Give Shaw a sliver of reason for redemption and then epitomize his journey with an ending of self-sacrifice. He doesn't get a star on the wall at Langley but our heroes and the audience remembers him as one of the good guys and a cautionary tale of just what the Spy Game can do to the very best of us.
