Perhaps because you couldn't cast much further than 40 feet. Joking lol

If all you are fishing for is trout then I guess you wouldn't need to often. Unless you are fishing lakes. Personally I fish Largemouth, carp, redfish, and sea trout. Most of my blind casting is 40 to 80 ft. I have a hard time reading hooks or feeling anything beyond that. Not to mention my accuracy suffers too
@MarcTelesha4 ай бұрын
Fishing in wind? Your 40 foot cast into a 20 mph wind can be made with a good tight loop. Also learning to throw long and practicing makes you able to make effortless 40 ft cast and saves your arm and shoulder. Most people cast with lots of effort and they could learn to do it easily and simply with little effort and with more accuracy if they refined their cast.

hi there James, ive a simple question as to how much line to shoot/release on the back casts and corresponding forward casts during the process of double hauling.
@gmstuart17 жыл бұрын
Luke Szarowicz you don't want to shoot too far. You have to maintain that tension and avoid slack. Also, depending on your skill you can only carry so much line in the air. I usually only carry 65-75' and then shoot the rest on delivery. There is a point where you'll have running Line out the tip and it's harder to turn over fat line with skinny line. Get the SA Expert Distance line. It has a 45' head and is easier to distance cast.
@brianneeson6853 жыл бұрын
The back cast goes as far as it's thrown! Watching your back cast when learning deep casting is essential until you get used to how the rod feels when the line reaches its max speed on the throw so you don't lose the tension and you can feel when it's time to turn the line and pull the haul to build the line speed! Sorry if that's not a great description! Im just trying to put into words how I do it myself! I've been fly fishing myself for 35 years but every day is a school day! There's always something to learn and James is fantastic! Really enjoyable to watch!
@lukeszarowicz3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Brian, 'True say' as my son would say. I was wondering whether there was some magic ratio of line length in the false casts up to the last wallop. If I cast out too much there seems an adverse effect on line speed. Sometimes I get things just right and shoot out the lot as though there's a sweet spot to holding back and building tension in the rod. I need practice although I don't actually need the distance! @@brianneeson685

He unbelievable, shoots out all the line and into the backing in a 30 mph wind , the trees are bending more than his rod , is he using a silicone based fly line dressing? 🤔
@richardc69327 жыл бұрын
I have always had an issue as to where to lay the excess line when casting. In bushy areas the line catches the vegetation at my feet. When it lays in the water in a stream the line is slow to lift from the water and so cutting distance. On a lawn it's not a problem.

line management. always a hassle for even the best fishermen. when your line is on the water try to sort of pile it up directly under your reel before you shoot it out always comes off easy for me that way. or if your in a river pull it upstream and kinda toss it up there so you dont try to shoot line that has current pulling on it
@rbdavisphoto7 жыл бұрын
Same situation, I've been working on a method to gather line, strip, strip, hold, strip, strip, hold, that produces 2-1/2' loops (5' of line). Hand position on the double haul is only arm pit high, Forward cast you simply open your hand partially, palm up, fingers curled slightly, in a slight down position The line will cleanly spool out of your hand. It has even increased my distance. 60-80ft casts are easy. - 20' Head out + 10ft leader, 1 or 2 false casts, to let out 10-15ft of line then a strong forward haul and open the palm. The secret is placement of the loop sets. 1st loop and the largest, and is on the life line, next is between the fingers and the palm, next at the knuckle crease, and the last is between the pinky and middle finger which allows your forefinger and thumb for line control. Too large loops will cause a knot.

Def line basket helps but also remember that this is apart of the mindfulness aspect of fly fishing, taking the extra moment to notice and accept your line catching a twig :)

1. a quality line dressed often will help - $20 line means short casts.2. I don't know what Rod you use but it does make a difference, a medium action is forgiving but not great at distance. 3. Slack line means a slack cast. I cannot turn my neck to watch my line straighten. I go by feel, and easily manage accurate 70ft casts on a WF6wt 9ft rod.
@gmstuart17 жыл бұрын
Butch Davis the V grip helps tracking when you turn to watch your cast. It took me a lot of practice to be able to turn and watch, but it's a game changer when you can do it.

WOW! Who casts 120 feet when they fish? The average fisherman cast about 17 feet when fishing. If you cast 120 feet and a trout hits your fly do you think you have a chance to set the hook?
@GManBart6 жыл бұрын
He mentions this being useful in fishing lakes. In that scenario, you generally can't see fish, so you're blindly casting and being able to cast farther lets you cover more water.
@blablabla51136 жыл бұрын
Look at a bankfishing competition in mainland europe and a lot of the top competitors reach 40yards. Competition pressure pushes the fish away from the anglers and in the later sessions only the longest of cast catch fish. Stretchless cores make strike detection and hooksetting still possible. If you can't throw a 40+ line in to the backing your not making a chance on for example some Belgian stillwaters

4 bonefish, 1 o'clock moving to 12 o'clock,,,, 120 feet out, start your back cast........said NO guide EVER!!
@steeliedan6 жыл бұрын
Edward Sullivan I'd imagine being able to cast 120' in perfect circumstances would aid when conditions are awful. 4 bonefish, 1 o'clock moving to 12 o'clock, 60 feet out, wind at 25 knots from 12 o'clock, is a more realistic scenario when this would be invaluable.
@alexanderkulakov64836 жыл бұрын
I doubt ability to cast 120' in perfect conditions directly translates to ability to cast 60' in 20 knots head wind.
@steeliedan6 жыл бұрын
Alexander Kulakov Not necessarily, but good form is never a hindrance to one's technique.
@fatroberto30126 жыл бұрын
This isn't for bonefish! It's for fishing UK stillwaters which are heavily fished for trout with a lot of catch and release. The fish get smart and realize that they are safer at a distance nobody can cast to!
@cachi-78786 жыл бұрын
Not pretty but effective. It looks like his accuracy is shit. Can’t see well on this video but if you look closely at the line, it doesn’t have a nice loop and there are quite a bit of oscillations along the line.
@paulobainz12102 жыл бұрын
Yes, It is bit confusing to me. He stresses the importance of keeping tension in the line but I don’t see it on the zoomed out footage. Odd. He still makes some good points though
@flydryriver49665 жыл бұрын
I can cast a 4wt rod 90ft constantly with way better presentation and technique than this guy. Look at his backcast the fly line is hitting the ground on numerous occasions, good luck when there’s a fly on the leader and he would get the worst wind knots in his tippet.

Absolutely useless on a river! But if you pond fish for trout at a fishery, (which in fact are already caught as there is nowhere for them to go) then if you get it out far fair enough. On a river 6, 8, 10 foot out will do. There its how delicate you can drop the fly over the fish, as opposed to how far you can fling the line. The fishery rainbows being pellet fed will take a cigarette butt on a hook!
@steafyisbeefy8195 жыл бұрын
